Start by checking how a turntable will connect to the equipment you already own. You need a phono stage somewhere in the signal path: it may be built into the turntable, provided by a receiver’s PHONO input, or supplied by a separate phono preamp. Once that is clear, compare drive type, operation, cartridge and setup requirements.
1. Match the turntable to your audio system
Before comparing features, map the connection from record player to speakers: turntable → phono stage → amplifier or powered speakers. A phono stage applies the equalization and gain needed for a turntable signal. If your turntable has a built-in phono preamp, it can connect to compatible line-level equipment. If your receiver has a dedicated PHONO input, that input provides the phono stage. If neither component does, you will need a separate phono preamp.

Check the PHONO/LINE switch
Some turntables with a built-in phono stage let you choose PHONO or LINE output. Set it to match the input you are using: use LINE when connecting to a line-level input, and PHONO when connecting to a receiver’s PHONO input or an external phono preamp. Sony warns that an incorrect PHONO/LINE or EQ setting can result in low audio. Sony explains the PHONO/LINE or EQ switch.

- Your receiver has a PHONO input: You can use that phono stage; check the turntable manual for the correct output mode.
- Your turntable has a built-in phono preamp: Use its LINE output with a line-level input, such as AUX, if available.
- Neither has a phono stage: Add a separate phono preamp between the turntable and amplifier or powered speakers.
Confirm the specific turntable’s outputs and the receiving equipment’s inputs in their manuals. A built-in phono preamp is a convenient choice when you want a straightforward connection to line-level equipment, but it is not the only workable setup.

2. Choose belt-drive or direct-drive for the use, not the label
Belt-drive and direct-drive are both established turntable designs. Denon’s guide discusses both, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal winner. Drive type alone is not enough to determine how a particular turntable will perform; consider the complete model and how you plan to use it.
If you are choosing between two models, compare their documented features and operating requirements rather than treating either drive system as automatically superior. Denon’s first-turntable guide provides an overview of the main choices.

- Fully automatic belt-drive turntable operation with two speeds: 33-1/3, 45 RPM
- Anti-resonance, die-cast aluminum platter
- Redesigned tonearm base and headshell for improved tracking and reduced resonance
- Integral Dual Magnet phono cartridge with replaceable diamond stylus (ATN3600LC)
3. Decide how much automation you want
Manual turntables require you to start playback and return or lift the tonearm yourself. A fully automatic model can handle starting and stopping at the push of a button, according to Denon. Automation can simplify routine use, but features vary: check the model documentation to learn exactly what happens at the beginning and end of a record.
4. Check the cartridge and its replacement path
A turntable that arrives with a moving-magnet (MM) cartridge already mounted and aligned can reduce initial setup work. Denon recommends this as a straightforward starting point for new listeners. Before buying, check which cartridge is included, whether its stylus is replaceable, and what replacement or upgrade options the manufacturer documents for that model.

Tracking force is the downward force the stylus applies to the record. The correct value depends on the cartridge, so use its manufacturer’s recommendation and follow the turntable manual’s setup procedure. Do not copy a setting from another model as a general rule.

- List your existing equipment: Note whether your amplifier or receiver has a PHONO input and whether your speakers need an amplifier or accept a line-level connection.
- Identify the phono stage: Decide whether it will be in the turntable, receiver, or a separate preamp.
- Match the connection mode: Confirm the turntable’s PHONO/LINE setting and the input it will feed.
- Choose operation and drive features: Decide whether automation matters and compare belt-drive or direct-drive models on their documented merits.
- Review cartridge and setup details: Check the included cartridge, stylus replacement options, and the model-specific tracking-force instructions.
These checks establish whether a turntable will work in your system and what setup it requires. They do not identify a best model or current price: those depend on your budget, location and equipment, and should be checked against current product documentation and local availability.
