Open-Source AI Office Suites Are Taking Aim at Microsoft Office

Open-source office suites are adding AI in different ways, but documented features and format support do not yet show that they have displaced Microsoft Office.

Open-source office software is approaching AI in different ways: some projects build AI into the suite, others make it optional or connectable, and LibreOffice currently has no generative AI features. That makes this an emerging category of competition with Microsoft Office—not evidence that open-source suites have displaced it.

What “going after Microsoft Office” means

Office suites compete on more than whether they can open a DOCX file. People also depend on spreadsheet behavior, presentation layouts, collaboration, operating-system support, privacy controls, and sometimes Microsoft-specific features. The available product information describes efforts to serve those workflows, but it does not establish that any open-source alternative matches Microsoft Office in every case or is gaining market share at its expense.

One project with AI at its center is GenOffice. Its repository describes a free, open-source suite for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, Markdown, and HTML, with an AI agent and editing support for formats including DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. These are project-stated capabilities, not results from an independent compatibility test. GenOffice project repository

How the open-source suites approach AI

Suite AI approach What is established
GenOffice AI-centered suite The project describes a built-in AI agent, support for user-selected providers including local model servers, and says only AI calls leave the machine. Those are project statements, not independently verified privacy findings. Project repository
Collabora Office Optional integrated AI Collabora’s 26.04 announcement says AI is optional and disabled by default. The announcement describes desktop and online use. Collabora announcement
ONLYOFFICE Connect an AI provider Its desktop product page describes connecting an AI provider. Its official site states the suite is distributed under AGPL 3.0. ONLYOFFICE product information
LibreOffice 26.8 No generative AI features in this release The Document Foundation announced on August 26, 2026: “LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features.” The Foundation emphasizes privacy and user control in its approach. Release announcement

The distinctions matter: open-source licensing does not dictate whether AI is built in, enabled by default, or connected to an outside provider. And an AI feature’s presence alone says nothing about its quality, accuracy, or suitability for confidential work.

Can these suites handle Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files?

There is evidence of format support, but not a controlled comparison of how faithfully complex files transfer. Collabora’s 2025 desktop launch announcement says its Windows, macOS, and Linux product supports Microsoft OOXML formats and uses LibreOffice core technology. ONLYOFFICE describes Microsoft-format compatibility on its desktop product page. GenOffice’s repository lists editing support for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. These are documented product claims, not proof that every document, macro, chart, animation, or layout will behave identically.

For important work, test representative files in the exact suite and version you plan to use. Check page breaks, fonts, formulas, charts, comments, tracked changes, macros, and slide transitions; then save back to the format your colleagues need and reopen it in their software. Where AI processing happens—and what that does not prove

AI data flow depends on the provider and configuration. GenOffice says users can select providers, including local model servers, and that only AI calls leave the machine. A local model option can be relevant when minimizing external transfers, but the project’s statement is not an independent audit of the application or its network behavior.

Collabora says its integrated AI is optional and disabled by default. ONLYOFFICE’s product page describes connecting an AI provider. In either provider-connected setup, check the provider’s own terms and determine what content is sent when you invoke a feature. The available product descriptions do not establish a comparative privacy ranking or verify the handling of every provider.

What to check before choosing one

  • AI controls: Decide whether you want AI built in, optional, or absent, and confirm what is enabled by default.
  • File workflow: Test the documents and features your work actually uses rather than relying on a general compatibility label.
  • Deployment: Collabora describes desktop and online use; its desktop announcement specifies Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the product’s current documentation for the edition and deployment that fit your needs.
  • Privacy: Identify whether an AI feature uses a local model or a connected provider, what data it sends, and which party’s policy governs that transfer.
  • Microsoft-specific dependencies: If your work relies on macros, advanced spreadsheet functions, specialist collaboration features, or other Microsoft-only workflows, verify those individually before switching.
  • License and governance: ONLYOFFICE states that its suite is distributed under AGPL 3.0. Review the relevant project’s licensing and governance information for the product and version you intend to deploy.

Is open-source AI office software replacing Microsoft Office?

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: open-source projects are competing in the office-suite category and experimenting with distinct ways to add AI. It does not establish broad adoption, displacement of Microsoft Office, or a winner on compatibility, performance, or privacy. The best fit depends on a user’s file requirements, collaboration needs, and comfort with the chosen AI data flow.
