Open FinTech Forum 2018 was a two-day Linux Foundation conference held in New York on October 10–11, 2018. It examined how financial services organizations could use and contribute to open-source technology, with sessions spanning open-source programs, AI, blockchain, cloud-native systems, Kubernetes and containers, and quantum computing. The event has concluded.

What was Open FinTech Forum 2018?

The Linux Foundation held the conference at the 2Below Conference Center at Credit Suisse in New York. Its premise was the intersection of financial services and open source, including how organizations could adopt open source internally and apply emerging technologies to the sector. The event page now identifies the conference as concluded and includes keynote videos and a photo gallery.

What topics did the conference cover?

The Linux Foundation’s July 9, 2018 announcement framed the program as guidance for CIOs and senior technologists, alongside discussion of technologies relevant to financial services. The announcement named these areas:

  • Establishing or improving internal open-source programs.
  • Artificial intelligence and blockchain.
  • Cloud-native technology, including Kubernetes and containers.
  • Quantum computing.

The announcement’s call for speaking proposals closed on July 21, 2018. That was a historical deadline, not an active opportunity.

Who spoke, and what sessions are documented?

The organizer’s speaker list included Brian Behlendorf, then Executive Director of Hyperledger; Bob Sutor, then Vice President for IBM Q Strategy and Ecosystem at IBM Research; and Yuri Litvinovich, then Senior Cloud Engineer at Scotiabank. These are roles as listed in the event’s historical materials, not claims about their current positions. The event archive also links to a 2018 keynote video playlist.

One documented session focused on building a fintech startup with cloud-native technology. Lunar Engineering’s talks archive lists Kasper Nissen and Thomas Bøgh Fangel presenting it at the event in New York on October 10, 2018, and links to the slides.

How can you explore the archived event?

The Linux Foundation’s retrospective event page is the starting point for its keynote videos and photo gallery. For the cloud-native startup presentation, Lunar’s archive provides the session entry and slide link. The available material documents the program, but does not establish an attendance figure.

Why the event’s focus still matters

Open FinTech Forum’s agenda brought two concerns together: the practical work of adopting open source inside financial organizations and the technical possibilities of areas such as AI, blockchain, cloud native, and quantum computing. That combination is useful context when reading the archived sessions: the forum was about both organizational practice and technology, rather than a single product or one narrowly defined fintech trend.
