On a compatible Samsung Galaxy device, press and hold the Side key or dedicated Bixby key to open Bixby. You can also launch the Bixby app. The first time, follow the setup prompts, choose a language if asked, and sign in to your Samsung account. After setup, use the button, voice wake-up, or typed requests. Bixby requires Wi-Fi or mobile data, and availability depends on your model, region, language, and software version.
Set up Bixby for the first time
- Launch Bixby: Press and hold the Side key or dedicated Bixby key. If another feature opens, find the Bixby app—often in the Samsung folder—or search for Bixby in Settings. The Side key may be assigned to a different action. Samsung’s US setup guide and Samsung Canada’s guide note that screens and labels can vary by device and software version.
- Choose a language if prompted, sign in to your Samsung account, and complete the on-screen instructions. Samsung says a Samsung account is required to use Bixby and its features.
Choose how to access Bixby
Use a key
Once Bixby is set up, press and hold the Side or Bixby key and speak your request. On some models the Side key can be configured for another action, so launch the Bixby app if the key does not open the assistant.

Use voice wake-up
In Bixby settings, turn on the voice wake-up option and follow the prompts to register your voice. The exact setting name and location vary. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “Bixby.”

Type a request
Open Bixby and tap the keyboard icon to enter a request instead of speaking. Samsung’s US instructions describe this option.

What you can ask Bixby to do
Samsung’s Canada setup guide gives examples including checking today’s schedule, setting an alarm, playing media, and finding content on the device. What Bixby can understand or control depends on the device, language, software, and available services.
That guide documents this language-setting path for its interface: Settings > Advanced features > Bixby > Language and voice style > Language. If your menus differ, search Settings for “Bixby”; labels are not identical across versions.

Check requirements and availability
- Account and connection: A Samsung account is required. Samsung’s US support page says Bixby also needs Wi-Fi or mobile data. See Samsung’s requirements.
- Model, region, language, and software: Samsung lists support across Galaxy S, Note, Z Fold, Z Flip, and selected A-series families; its product information also discusses tablets, watches, Buds, Books, and SmartThings-connected devices. A device being listed does not guarantee that every Bixby feature works on it. Check the Samsung support page for your country and exact model. Samsung’s Bixby product information notes that availability and supported languages or accents can vary and change.
- Temporary restrictions: Bixby Voice may be limited during calls, media recording, DeX docking, Power saving or Emergency mode, or while Samsung Kids is active. The restrictions listed can differ by device and Samsung page; see Samsung US support and Samsung’s product information.
- Connected-device control: To control SmartThings-enabled devices through Bixby, connect them in the SmartThings app first. Galaxy Watch and Buds control uses the Galaxy Wearable app on a smartphone. Samsung’s Bixby product information explains these requirements.
If Bixby will not open or respond
- Try the app: If holding the Side key opens something else, locate and open Bixby directly. Search Settings for “Bixby” if needed.
- Check setup: Make sure you completed the setup prompts and signed in to your Samsung account.
- Check connection: Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, as Samsung requires a connection for Bixby service.
- Check temporary restrictions: If voice access is unavailable during a call, recording, or a restricted mode, try again after that activity or mode ends.
- Confirm local support: Look up your exact Galaxy model, country, language, and software version on Samsung’s local support pages. Feature availability and menus can differ.
