Open an MDI File in Windows 10 or 11: Convert It to TIFF

MDI files are a legacy Office Document Imaging format. Microsoft documents conversion to TIFF, but its converter page does not list Windows 10 or 11 as supported.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not have a built-in app for opening Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MDI) files. Microsoft’s documented route is to convert an MDI file to TIFF with its legacy MDI to TIFF File Converter, then open the TIFF in an image viewer. However, Microsoft’s download page lists older Windows versions—not Windows 10 or 11—so it does not confirm that the converter is supported on current Windows releases.

First, confirm the file is really an MDI

In File Explorer, turn on View > Show > File name extensions so you can check the complete filename. Microsoft explains that Windows uses extensions to identify file types, and that changing an extension changes the name rather than converting the file. Microsoft’s file-extension guidance covers both points.

Do not rename scan.mdi to scan.tif as a workaround. The contents remain MDI data, so an image viewer may still be unable to read the file.

Convert MDI to TIFF with Microsoft’s legacy tool

Microsoft provides a command-line utility called the MDI to TIFF File Converter. Its product page describes converting one or more MDI files to TIFF. Microsoft says MDI is a proprietary format associated with MODI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging), which was deprecated as part of Office 2010.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Get the converter from Microsoft. Use the Microsoft Download Center page linked above. It describes version 1.0, a 1.9 MB download, and a publication date of July 15, 2024. Those are download details, not a statement that the utility supports current Windows.
  2. Extract the download. Run the downloaded self-extracting file and follow its prompts. Microsoft’s instructions refer to an extracted folder named modiconv.
  3. Open a command prompt in that folder. In the extracted modiconv folder, open Command Prompt and run mdi2tif –help to see the tool’s usage instructions. Follow the syntax shown there for your input and output files.
  4. Choose writable output and log locations. Microsoft recommends using locations you can write to when running without administrator privileges; otherwise, the converter may not be able to save its output or logs.
  5. Open the resulting TIFF. If conversion completes, open the TIFF in an image viewer. Microsoft notes that TIFF can be viewed by a variety of image-viewing programs.

Will the converter work on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Microsoft’s download page lists Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 R2, and Windows XP SP3 among its supported systems. It does not list Windows 10 or Windows 11. The page therefore does not establish compatibility with either current version, and successful use on one PC should not be assumed for another.

If the utility will not run or cannot convert the file, ask the sender for a TIFF export, or see whether a trusted legacy MODI installation is available to export it. Neither option is guaranteed; avoid downloading an MDI viewer from an unverified source.

If you only need to open a file

If you already have a TIFF copy, open that copy with an image viewer. If Windows asks you to choose an app for a file, Microsoft’s general guidance is to right-click it, select Open with, and choose an installed app or look in the Microsoft Store. This is general Windows advice, not confirmation that a Store app can open MDI files directly.

What about searchable text in an MDI?

Legacy Office Document Imaging documentation describes MDI as a scan output option and says recognized OCR text can be stored in MDI and TIFF files for text searches. That is historical product documentation mirrored by a third-party documentation site, not a guarantee that every MDI contains OCR text or that converting it will preserve searchable text. The archived Office Document Imaging help provides that background.
