Beginner default: choose a Samurai, Tank, or suitable Ninja for top; a Ninja or Samurai for jungle; a Mage for mid; and a Marksman with a Support for bottom. These are starting conventions, not permanent class rules. In Onmyoji Arena, a shikigami’s class and recommended lane are separate pieces of data, so confirm the live client’s lane prompt and recent adjustment notes before locking in.
The useful question is not simply “Which class goes in this lane?” It is “What must this pick accomplish here, and can this particular shikigami do that reliably after the latest changes?” The guide below turns each lane into a practical selection checklist.

Quick lane guide
| Lane | Beginner pool | What the lane needs from a pick | Typical selection error |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Samurai, Tank, some Ninjas | A champion who can handle a largely individual early lane, survive pressure and still provide a durable or fighting presence later. | Assuming every Tank or Samurai is automatically a top-lane pick. |
| Jungle | Ninja, Samurai | Efficient neutral-camp farming, sensible routes and timely pressure on lanes rather than acting like a fourth laner. | Choosing by class label without checking clear speed or route reliability. |
| Mid | Mage | Reliable damage and control from the central lane, with enough wave and movement impact to influence both sides of the map. | Treating “Mage” as a guarantee of current mid strength. |
| Bottom | Marksman plus Support | A damage source that can scale or finish targets, paired with protection, control or sustain that lets the duo survive and convert advantages. | Picking two damage dealers or assuming a Support’s class fixes a weak pairing. |
This mapping is the beginner convention described in secondary guides, not an immutable rulebook. The official character directory exposes six class filters—Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank and Support—but its accessible page does not show a complete character-by-character lane map. A community-maintained data structure likewise stores “recommended lane” separately from “class.” That separation explains why off-lane choices can work and why a class-only shortcut can fail.

Class, position and team job are different things
A class is a broad description of a kit. A position is where the shikigami is expected to spend much of the match. A team job is the practical contribution your composition needs: damage, control, protection, durability, pressure or some combination. Those three labels often point in the same direction, but they are not interchangeable.

For example, two Ninjas may share a burst-oriented class while having very different camp-clear speeds, gank access or late-fight value. Two Supports may both protect allies but differ in shielding, crowd control or ability to contest a wave. Read the lane recommendation as a starting signal, then inspect what the actual kit does in the current patch.
Top lane: survive the isolated start and remain useful
What top asks you to do
Top is commonly assigned to a Samurai, Tank or selected Ninja. The practical interpretation is that the pick must cope with an early lane that is often more self-contained than bottom, absorb or threaten trades without constant assistance, and contribute a durable or fighting presence when teams group. This is a functional explanation of the convention, not an official rule that every member of those classes belongs there.
Top-lane selection checklist
- Independent trading: Choose a shikigami whose damage, mitigation or sustain lets you contest the lane without requiring a perfect setup from an ally.
- Failure tolerance: A pick that can retreat, clear safely or re-enter fights is easier to use while learning than one that must win every early exchange.
- Front-line or side pressure: Decide whether your team needs someone to stand in front during fights or someone who can threaten a side lane. Do not assume one pick does both equally well.
- Matchup awareness: Check the current lane recommendation and adjustment notes; a familiar class can still have a poor contemporary matchup or a changed ability pattern.
When a top pick is questionable
A Tank or Samurai selected solely because of its label may lack the wave control, mobility or damage needed for the actual matchup. A Ninja may win isolated fights but leave the team short of durability. Before locking in, look at the rest of the draft: if no one else can initiate or absorb damage, a fragile duelist may create a composition problem even when it is comfortable in lane.

Jungle: route, camps and pressure across the map
Why jungle is a distinct job
The conventional jungle pool is Ninjas and Samurais, but the position is defined less by class than by map-wide responsibilities. A jungler farms neutral camps, chooses routes, watches lane states and converts timing into pressure. It is not a fourth lane: spending every minute beside one laner usually sacrifices camp income and makes your movement predictable.

What to check before choosing
- Clear reliability: Can the shikigami defeat early camps at a practical pace while retaining enough health or resources to act afterward?
- Route options: Does it have more than one sensible opening route when a camp is contested or a lane is not gankable?
- Gank conversion: Once you reach a lane, does the kit provide damage, control or threat that an ally can follow up?
- Recovery plan: If an early invade or failed gank costs time, can the pick return to farming without becoming irrelevant?
Official January 2023 Season 20 notes described efforts to lower the early-game burden on junglers, change monster characteristics and support route choices. Those changes show why jungle strength cannot be inferred from a class name alone.
A patch example: clear speed is character-specific
In May 2024 balance notes, Sesshomaru was identified as a Ninja whose jungle speed was considered slow, and his damage to monsters was adjusted. The example is more useful as a selection lesson than as a ranking: a Ninja label does not guarantee an efficient clear. Check the current numbers and client guidance for the shikigami you intend to play.
Mid lane: central damage, control and movement
What mid needs
Mages are the conventional mid choice because the central lane rewards dependable ability damage and control. A mid pick should be able to interact with the wave, survive pressure long enough to use its range or tools, and make its central location matter by moving toward developing fights when safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate the actual kit
- Wave interaction: Can you clear or contest the lane without spending every resource?
- Threat range: Does the shikigami create space, punish approaches or force opponents to respect a combo?
- Control value: Damage is easier to use when the kit also slows, stuns, zones or otherwise enables allies.
- Side-lane access: A mid pick that can move first may create more value than one with higher theoretical burst but no safe way to leave lane.
Role flexibility is real. The May 2024 notes described Dai Shimei as a Mage and discussed adjustments intended to improve his damage contribution. The same notes observed prominent burst damage from Aoandon in the bottom lane. Neither statement establishes a universal current recommendation; both demonstrate that a class can appear outside its conventional lane when a particular kit and patch support it.

Bottom lane: build a functioning duo
Marksman’s job
Bottom is normally a two-player lane with a Marksman paired with a Support. The Marksman supplies sustained or scaling damage and must be able to farm safely enough for that damage to matter later. In May 2024 notes, Sakura was described as a Marksman whose strength was more evident later, with changes aimed at raising her mid-to-late-game damage. That is a patch-specific description, not a permanent tier judgment.
Support’s job
The Support makes the duo playable: protecting the damage dealer, creating opportunities, controlling space or helping the pair disengage. A Support does not have to be passive. The right choice depends on whether your Marksman needs shielding, peel, initiation, lane pressure or help surviving a particular threat.
Check the pairing, not just each name
- Shared timing: Do both kits become threatening at the same stage of the lane?
- Protection versus pressure: If the Marksman is vulnerable early, a defensive Support may be more valuable than a second source of damage.
- Engage follow-through: If the Support starts a fight, can the Marksman reach the target and deal damage safely?
- Late-fight shape: Know whether the duo wants front-to-back fighting, picks, sieges or disengagement.
Kaguya and Hana were discussed as Supports in the 2024 balance notes, including Kaguya’s substantial shielding. That illustrates the kind of complementary protection a Support can provide; it does not make every Support equally suitable for every Marksman or patch.
How to choose when two shikigami could work

1. Position fit in the live client
Start with the current selection screen. If the game recommends a lane for the shikigami, treat that as stronger evidence than an old tier list. Because class and recommended lane are separate fields, record both mentally: “Mage” tells you about the kit category; the lane prompt tells you how the current game expects that kit to be deployed.
2. Missing team contribution
Look at what the draft lacks. If the team already has damage but no reliable protection, a defensive Support or durable top pick may produce more value than another burst option. If fights end with targets escaping, control or sustained damage may matter more than a second assassin-style threat.
3. Execution and comfort
The beginner lane guidance recommends starting with one role and a small pool of characters. That approach reduces decision load and lets you learn routes, matchups and timing. A theoretically ideal pick that you cannot execute is less useful than a sound option you can pilot consistently.
4. Patch sensitivity
Read the latest adjustment information for the shikigami and for systems that affect its lane. A damage, cooldown, monster or minion change can alter a pick’s practical job without changing its class label.
Best Value
Use current prompts and patch notes, not stale assumptions
Onmyoji Arena’s official January 2023 notes said a beginner lane guide had been added to provide suitable lane prompts. They also described an adjustment display covering shikigami and other battle changes released during the preceding 14 days at that time. Those details are historical: the interface and time window may have changed by 2026.
Before a match, check the current selection screen, read the newest patch notes available in your region and inspect any adjustment panel the client provides. If the screen conflicts with an old guide, follow the current client unless you have a specific, tested reason not to. The official character page is dynamically loaded and its accessible text confirms class filters but does not expose the full per-character lane mapping, so it should not be treated as a complete lane chart.
What balance examples teach about role labels
| Shikigami example | Class or lane context in official notes | Selection lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Sesshomaru | Ninja; jungle clear speed and monster damage were addressed in May 2024. | Jungle viability depends on clear and route performance, not the Ninja tag alone. |
| Tanuki | Tank; included among role-specific balance adjustments. | A Tank label does not state which lane or matchup is best after a patch. |
| Kaguya and Hana | Supports; Kaguya’s shielding was specifically described. | Support value can come from different forms of protection and must fit the Marksman. |
| Sakura | Marksman; later-game strength and mid-to-late-game damage were discussed. | Timing matters: a scaling Marksman changes how the duo should trade and fight. |
| Aoandon | Mage; burst damage was noted in bottom-lane use. | Off-lane success can be character- and patch-specific, not a universal Mage rule. |
| Dai Shimei | Mage; damage contribution was targeted by adjustments. | Balance changes can alter a familiar pick’s practical output without changing its class. |
These are examples of balance intentions and role descriptions from 2024 notes, not current win rates, pick rates or a recommendation to copy a particular composition.
A simple practice plan for new players
- Select one primary lane: Use the beginner prompts to avoid learning four different jobs at once.
- Keep a small pool: Learn two or three shikigami with related responsibilities rather than switching after every loss.
- Write down the job: Before loading in, state whether your pick must front-line, clear camps, control mid or protect a Marksman.
- Review one failure: After the match, identify whether the problem was lane fit, execution, route timing or a recent balance change.
- Refresh after patches: Recheck the client prompt and adjustment display whenever the game updates.
Common selection problems and fixes
“The class says Tank, so top must be correct.”
Fix this by checking the recommended lane field and asking what your team needs. A Tank that cannot contest the current lane or provide the required initiation may be a poor choice despite the label.
“My Ninja cannot keep up in jungle.”
Compare its early camp speed, health costs and route options with another current jungle recommendation. Sesshomaru’s 2024 adjustment example shows that even a conventional Ninja jungler may need balance changes to clear efficiently.
“Our bottom lane has plenty of damage but collapses immediately.”
Replace redundant damage with protection, control or disengagement. A Support’s value is measured by how reliably the duo can survive and convert its damage, not by personal damage alone.
“An old guide contradicts the selection screen.”
Prefer the current client prompt and recent patch notes. Historical lane guides remain useful for learning the traditional structure, but they cannot guarantee present-day strength after map, monster, minion or shikigami adjustments.
