Save the evidence, stop communicating with the suspected scammer, and report through official channels you reach independently. For a U.S. case, the Federal Trade Commission’s reporting list includes the FTC, CFTC, SEC, FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the cryptocurrency exchange used to send funds. Which channels fit depends on what happened. If an account, password, recovery phrase, or wallet permission may be exposed, use the provider’s official security process immediately as well.
A report may help authorities and platforms analyze a scheme, but filing one does not promise reimbursement, a reversed blockchain transaction, a frozen wallet, identification of the scammer, or a criminal investigation. Never pay an unexpected “recovery” service, tax, unlock charge, tracing fee, or investigator who claims they can get your crypto back.

Do these things first
- End the suspicious contact. Do not click another link, install software, share your screen, send another transfer, or disclose a password, one-time code, private key, or recovery phrase. If someone claims to represent an exchange, ignore the message and independently open the exchange’s official app or type its known website address. The FBI’s exchange-impersonation guidance says to call the exchange’s official phone number to verify whether there is a problem: FBI IC3 alert of August 1, 2024.
- Preserve what exists. Save transaction records, wallet addresses, messages, profile pages, domains, emails, and screenshots before content disappears. Keep the original files and conversation context.
- Protect any account or wallet that may still be exposed. Use only a trusted, independently reached wallet or exchange interface. Change credentials through the provider’s normal security flow, contact the exchange if its account or transfer service is involved, and follow the wallet provider’s instructions if a recovery phrase or private key was disclosed.
- Record transaction identifiers. Copy the transaction hash or ID for every transfer, the sending and receiving addresses, asset, amount, date, time, and time zone when known.
- File the relevant reports. U.S. readers can use the agencies and exchange channel in the FTC’s list. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection, cybercrime, financial-regulator, police, and platform channels.
- Keep reference numbers and expect no unsolicited helper. Authorities and platforms will not require you to pay a stranger who contacts you to “unlock” or recover funds.
The FBI says people should report even when there has been no financial loss and provide whatever information is available. Its victim guidance states: “If you believe you or someone you know may be a victim of a cryptocurrency scam, immediately submit a report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much transaction information as possible.” The quoted guidance is from August 24, 2023.

Make a dated, chronological record while events are fresh. Do not edit an image in a way that removes surrounding context. If a website or device may be compromised, do not revisit it merely to obtain a better screenshot; use existing records or seek trusted technical assistance.

Transaction and account records
- Transaction hash, transaction ID, or equivalent identifier for each transfer.
- Sending and receiving wallet addresses, with an explanation of which address belongs to which party if that is known.
- Cryptocurrency name, token contract address when applicable, amount, and date and time, including time zone if available.
- Exchange, broker, payment service, or wallet used; account identifiers; deposit and withdrawal confirmations; and relevant account statements.
- Explorer links, token-listing pages, or other public records that show the transfer or token. Preserve the exact URLs.
Identity and contact clues
- The person’s claimed name, organization, job title, usernames, handles, phone numbers, email addresses, and other identifiers.
- The platform or app where you first encountered the contact and the account’s exact profile name and URL.
- Website domains, complete page URLs, suspicious applications, advertisements, and message URLs.
- The token’s name, ticker, contract address, logo or project claims, and the page or message where it was promoted.
Communications and timeline
- Original emails, chats, direct messages, call logs, voice messages, attachments, and files where practical.
- Screenshots showing messages, profile details, token displays, websites, ads, warnings, payment instructions, and transaction confirmations.
- A simple timeline: first contact, promises or instructions, wallet connections or approvals, transfers, attempted withdrawals, requests for additional money, and reports already filed.
The FBI’s cryptocurrency investment-fraud guidance and IC3 cryptocurrency guidance emphasize transaction information but also ask for how the victim met the contact, communication platforms, domains, phone numbers, identifiers, and a timeline. If you lack transaction data, report anyway and provide what you have.
Where to report in the United States
The FTC’s consumer guidance lists the following routes for fraud or suspicious activity involving cryptocurrency. The list is U.S.-specific; it does not mean every case belongs with every agency.

The FTC’s explanation of these options is at What To Know About Cryptocurrency and Scams. Select channels based on the facts and include the names of agencies or platforms to which you already reported.
What IC3 does—and does not do
IC3 is a reporting intake and analysis center. Information submitted through its portal may be used and shared with law-enforcement or partner agencies, as described on the IC3 site. A referral is not a promise that an investigator will contact you or that your funds will be recovered. If there is immediate physical danger, the IC3 site says to call 911 or local police first.

Use local law enforcement when appropriate
A local police report can be relevant for threats, stalking, coercion, identity theft, or other crimes within local jurisdiction. It is a separate channel from a federal online complaint. Give the report number to other agencies when their forms ask whether you have already reported the matter.
Match the channel to the problem
When several routes appear relevant, decide using three questions:
- Jurisdiction: Which country, state or province, and local area have authority over the people, service, or conduct?
- Purpose: Do you need consumer-fraud intake, a financial-market tip, cybercrime reporting, platform moderation, or an exchange’s account-security response?
- Immediate risk: Is an account still accessible to someone else, is a transfer pending, or has a password, recovery phrase, private key, or wallet approval been exposed? A provider’s security process may be urgent even while a regulator or police report is being prepared.
Submitting to multiple relevant channels is reasonable, but keep the facts consistent. State clearly when a detail is uncertain rather than guessing an address, identity, amount, or date.
How to report a fake or impersonation token
An impersonation token can copy a known project’s name, ticker, logo, website style, or claims. A familiar-looking symbol is not proof that the token is official. The token contract address, chain, promotion page, and transaction records are more useful identifiers.

Preserve the contract address exactly as displayed, the network, token-listing or explorer page, the account or website that promoted it, and any promises about returns or withdrawals. Do not connect a wallet or approve a transaction merely to investigate. Do not assume a centralized listing service, explorer, or decentralized network has a universal obligation or ability to remove the token.
The FBI Denver Field Office has issued a warning specifically about cryptocurrency token impersonation scams and directs victims to report to IC3: FBI Denver token-impersonation warning. That field-office alert does not establish a universal token-reporting authority, and a report cannot be represented as a guaranteed way to erase a token from a blockchain.
Report the promotion as well as the token
If the token was advertised through a social account, messaging service, website, or listing platform, report the account, post, listing, or domain through that service’s native reporting process. Reach the process from the service’s app or independently verified official website; menus and labels change, so do not trust a reporting link sent by the suspect.

Impersonators often claim that your account has been frozen, a withdrawal needs verification, or a security problem requires an immediate payment. They may send a malicious link, a phone number, or instructions to install remote-access software.

- Do not reply, call the number in the message, click its link, install its application, or provide a one-time code.
- Open the exchange app you already trust, type the known domain yourself, or locate the official support number from a reliable account statement or verified site.
- Check notifications, account activity, withdrawal status, security settings, and support tickets inside that official channel.
- Tell the exchange’s security or fraud team what happened, including the impersonator’s exact profile, phone number, email, domain, and transaction IDs.
- Report the impersonating profile and website to the hosting platform, then submit the appropriate government reports.
The FBI specifically advises independently verifying a claimed exchange problem and says, “Call the cryptocurrency exchange’s official phone number to verify if there is a problem.” This is guidance in its August 1, 2024 exchange-impersonation alert, not a requirement to use a particular phone channel.

If a password, email account, or exchange account may be compromised
- Use the provider’s official security page or app to change the password and end unfamiliar sessions.
- Secure the associated email account, because an attacker who controls it may reset other credentials.
- Turn on the provider’s available multi-factor authentication using a method you can verify independently.
- Contact the exchange through its official support route and ask about pending withdrawals, account freezes, and evidence preservation.
If a recovery phrase or private key was exposed
Assume the wallet is compromised. Follow the wallet provider’s trusted instructions for moving any remaining assets to a new wallet, and do not reveal the new recovery phrase to anyone. A transfer made to protect funds can itself be dangerous if an unsolicited helper supplied the destination or pressured you to act quickly.
If a suspicious approval or wallet connection exists
Review and revoke approvals only through a wallet interface or blockchain tool you independently trust, following current provider instructions. Do not paste a recovery phrase or private key into an “approval checker,” and do not connect the wallet to a site suggested in an unexpected message. Reporting outside the United States
The FTC and IC3 list above is not a worldwide reporting map. Outside the United States, consult your country’s consumer-protection authority, cybercrime or national police reporting service, financial regulator, local police, the exchange involved, and the platform hosting the scam. The correct agency names and portals differ by country and may depend on where the victim, service, or suspect is located.
Singapore example
Singapore-specific guidance illustrates the distinction. The Singapore Police Force advises contacting the cryptocurrency platform, making a police report, and reporting fraudulent cryptocurrency phishing websites to CSA’s SingCERT. Follow the details in its July 3, 2025 advisory. Do not treat Singapore’s agencies or process as a substitute for your own country’s channels.
What happens after you report
Government forms collect information for intake, analysis, possible referral, and trend detection. Platform reports may support moderation, account review, or preservation of provider records. An exchange’s security team may be able to address an account or pending transfer, but its actions depend on its policies, timing, the asset, and the transaction’s status.
Blockchain transfers are generally designed to be irreversible. A report does not reverse a confirmed transaction or guarantee that a wallet can be frozen. Keep your complaint confirmations, ticket numbers, dates, and copies of submitted material. If an agency or platform follows up, verify the contact through a known official route before sharing additional information.

People who have just lost crypto are targeted by a second wave of fraud. A supposed investigator, lawyer, exchange employee, hacker, or government agent may claim to have located the funds and demand an upfront tax, bond, unlock fee, tracing charge, or percentage.
Do not pay or send more crypto in response to an unsolicited recovery offer. The FBI and IC3 warn about recovery scams; IC3 states that it does not work with outside law firms or cryptocurrency services to recover funds. Read the warning and reporting information through IC3’s cryptocurrency page and its official homepage. No legitimate report requires you to publish a seed phrase, private key, password, one-time code, or unredacted identity document in a public comment or public database.
A quick checklist before you click “submit”
- Have you stopped responding and avoided further links, software, transfers, and disclosures?
- Do you have every available transaction hash or ID, address, asset, amount, date, and time?
- Did you preserve the original messages, profile information, domains, token contract, and screenshots?
- Did you write a chronological account and distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions?
- Did you secure exposed credentials, email, exchange access, wallet phrase, private key, or approvals through independently verified instructions?
- Are you using the correct country’s agencies and the official platform or exchange channel?
- Did you save report and support reference numbers?
- Will you ignore anyone who unexpectedly asks for an upfront recovery payment?
In 2023, IC3 received more than 69,000 public complaints about financial fraud involving cryptocurrency, according to the FBI’s 2023 Cryptocurrency Fraud Report. That figure counts complaints, not verified unique victims, successful criminal cases, or recovered funds.
