Neither online slots nor table games always offer better odds. A fair comparison depends on the exact game, its rules, the wager and—when player decisions matter—the strategy assumed in the published return figure. A slot’s RTP is a long-run theoretical average, not a promise about what you will get back in a session.
How online slots and table games work
Online slots
A slot round typically starts with a stake and resolves through programmed outcomes, symbols, a paytable and any bonus features. The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) uses “fruit, slot, or jackpot machines” for reel-based gaming machines; that description is specific to those machines, not a universal definition of every online slot. Table games
Table games resolve through their own rules for hands, wheel outcomes or other events. Blackjack includes player decisions within the rules; roulette involves wagers on wheel outcomes; baccarat has its own hand and wager rules. Their precise versions and availability depend on the jurisdiction and venue. New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), for example, lists these games in its casino table-game rules index.

Online slots and table games may use random-number-generator (RNG) outcomes, and some table games are offered with a live dealer. These are broad formats, not a guarantee that every title works the same way. In Great Britain, the UKGC says RNG-driven online games must be tested by an approved test house before release and monitored after launch for fairness and conformity with their designed RTP. How the UKGC ensures online gambling games are fair

What RTP means on an online slot
Return to player (RTP) is the theoretical share of stakes returned as prizes over a large number of plays. It does not predict an individual spin or session. The UKGC puts it plainly: “The %RTP is an average achieved over a significant number of game plays and not each time the gaming machine is played.” Its player guidance gives an illustrative example: a machine showing 85% RTP does not mean a player should expect to win 85 pence for every £1 staked during a session. That 85% is an example, not a typical or universal slot figure. UKGC guidance on return to player
How house edge differs from RTP
House edge describes the casino’s expected average share under normal patterns of play. The UKGC describes it as the percentage the casino expects to keep on average from each hand or spin. Like RTP, it is a long-run measure—not a guarantee about a particular hand, spin or session. RTP describes the theoretical share returned; house edge describes the casino’s expected advantage. Are slots or table games better odds?
There is no reliable category-wide winner. RTP and house edge vary by individual title, table rules and wager. For games influenced by skill, the result also depends on the strategy basis used for the calculation. The available regulatory sources do not provide a consistent cross-category dataset or a single number that establishes that slots or table games always have better odds. Compare the disclosed figure for the exact game and version instead.
Why blackjack strategy can change the comparison
Blackjack gives players decisions within the game’s rules, so a theoretical return for a skill-influenced game needs a stated strategy basis. The UKGC’s remote gambling standard says theoretical RTP for a non-peer-to-peer event involving skill should be calculated using autoplay or a standard or published strategy. A figure based on such a strategy is not a prediction of every player’s result. UKGC Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards, RTS 3

What to check before comparing games
For Great Britain-regulated remote gambling, game descriptions and information about house edge, RTP or event likelihood must be accessible; payout information must be readily available before a customer commits to gamble. Check the game’s rules, help or paytable material, and odds disclosure. UKGC RTS 3
- Rules: Identify how the result is determined, which decisions are available and which wager you are comparing.
- Odds disclosure: Look for RTP, house edge or the probability of winning events for that specific game.
- Paytable and payouts: Check the prizes, payout method and relevant game information before staking.
- Strategy assumptions: For a skill-influenced game, find out whether its theoretical return uses autoplay or a stated standard or published strategy.
- Version and jurisdiction: Verify that the rules shown apply to the version and market you are considering. The DIA’s New Zealand index marks its consolidated baccarat rules as updated June 2026, blackjack June 2025 and roulette May 2025; it also cautions that consolidated texts do not replace official Gazette versions and that not every casino offers every game. These dates and rules are specific to New Zealand, not a global standard. DIA casino table-game rules
- Regulatory context: Check which jurisdiction regulates the game. The testing and disclosure statements above describe Great Britain’s framework and should not be assumed to apply everywhere.
What the percentages can—and cannot—tell you
RTP and house edge help describe a game’s theoretical economics; they do not tell you what will happen in a short run of play. A published percentage is useful only when you know which game and rules it covers and, where decisions affect results, what strategy assumptions underpin it. Treat the comparison as information about the game, not a promise of winnings.
