Google and Microsoft describe email-based options; Proton may still request verification, while WhatsApp requires a phone number to activate an account.
What “without phone verification” means
There are three separate questions: whether a number is required to create an account, whether the service can present an additional anti-abuse check, and what methods you can use to secure or recover the account later. An optional phone field for recovery is not the same as a mandatory number check during signup.

The examples below reflect the providers’ published guidance; they are not an exhaustive list of services. Signup flows can change and may differ by account, device, geography, or risk checks, so review the official help page just before creating an account.
Services with documented alternatives to a phone number
| Service | What its guidance says about signup | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account | Google’s documented computer signup flow allows an existing non-Gmail email address. It labels adding and verifying a phone number optional. Google sends a code to the existing email address to verify it. Google Account Help: Create a Google Account | This describes the documented flow, not every account or circumstance. Google says recovery information can improve the prospects of recovering an account. |
| Microsoft account | Microsoft recommends trying an email address instead of a phone number as an alternative signup method if new-account creation fails. Microsoft Support: How to create a new Microsoft account | Available verification methods can differ by account; a phone option may not be available to everyone. |
| Proton Account | Proton may offer CAPTCHA, secondary-email, or SMS verification when creating an account. Proton: Human verification | The options depend on circumstances, so phone-free signup is not assured for every attempt. |
| WhatsApp’s help guidance says an active phone number is required to activate an account. Email-code login may be available for an existing account if an email address was added previously. WhatsApp Help Center: How to register your phone number | An email code is not a replacement for the phone-number requirement during initial activation. |
How to create an account using an email address
Google Account
- Open Google’s account-creation instructions and start the documented signup flow.
- Choose the option to use your existing email address rather than creating a Gmail address, when offered.
- Enter the code Google sends to that email address to verify it.
- When the flow offers a phone number as optional, you can leave it blank. If Google presents an additional check, follow the options shown for your signup.
Microsoft account
- Start the new-account flow described in Microsoft’s account-creation help.
- If phone-based creation fails or you prefer not to use a number, try an email address as Microsoft recommends.
- Use an email address you control and can continue accessing for account verification and recovery.
Proton Account
Begin signup at Proton and be prepared for the verification options it presents. Its human-verification guidance says a CAPTCHA, email verification, or SMS verification may be requested. If no phone-free option is offered, the published guidance does not promise a way to skip that requirement.

Why a service may still ask for a number
Some signup checks are conditional rather than a fixed requirement for every person. Proton says the available verification methods depend on circumstances, which can include repeated account attempts and Tor use; it describes verification as an anti-spam measure. A prompt in one attempt does not establish that every user will see the same prompt, and an email-based option in a documented flow does not guarantee that no extra check will appear.
There is no evidence here that VPNs, disposable numbers, temporary SMS websites, or repeated attempts reliably bypass verification. Do not rely on them as a signup strategy; they can also leave you without a dependable way to receive a legitimate security or recovery code.

Secure and recover an account without adding a phone
Skipping a phone field does not remove the need for a recovery plan. Keep access to the email address used to create the account, choose a strong unique password, and configure another supported security method when available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Keep your signup email accessible. Use an address you expect to retain, and protect that mailbox with its own strong password and security settings.
- Add supported recovery information. If the service offers a recovery email or another non-phone option, set it up and keep it current.
- Use stronger sign-in options. Microsoft lists email, an authenticator app, or a passkey among verification methods that may be available; options vary by account. See Microsoft’s security-info and verification-code guidance. Use an authenticator app or passkey where the service offers one.
- Preserve recovery codes and passkey access. Save any recovery codes the service provides somewhere secure, and make sure you can still access the device or credential holding a passkey.
A phone number can be useful as an additional recovery method, but it is not interchangeable with mandatory initial verification. Choose among the recovery methods actually supported for your account.
