“Onion over VPN” usually means connecting to a VPN first and then using Tor. It is not required to visit an onion service, and Tor Project generally advises against combining a VPN with Tor unless you are an advanced user who knows how to configure both without compromising privacy. For most people, Tor Browser and a verified onion address are the simpler route.
What “onion over VPN” means
The phrase describes a connection order: your device connects to a VPN, then sends traffic through Tor. A VPN is a separate service that changes the network path between your device and the internet. Tor routes traffic through a volunteer-operated relay network. They involve different intermediaries and trust decisions; adding a VPN does not automatically make Tor more private.

Tor Project’s guidance is explicit: “Generally speaking, we don’t recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you’re an advanced user who knows how to configure both in a way that doesn’t compromise your privacy.” Read the Tor Project guidance on VPNs and Tor before attempting a combined setup. It does not prescribe a universally recommended VPN-plus-Tor configuration.
What each connection path exposes
With a normal Tor circuit to a public website, Tor’s overview describes three relays: a guard or entry relay, a middle relay, and an exit relay. When you reach an onion service, the connection stays within Tor rather than leaving through a public exit relay to reach the service. An onion service connection is end-to-end encrypted between the Tor user and the service.

A VPN changes who receives the initial connection from your device: the VPN service can observe that connection. What the provider can learn or records depends on its implementation and logging practices; those details are provider-specific and are not established by Tor’s general guidance. Neither Tor nor a VPN should be treated as a promise that a user cannot be traced, and Tor does not conceal from every observer the fact that someone is using Tor.
Do you need a VPN to open an onion site?
No. An onion service is reached through Tor, and a VPN is not a prerequisite. For ordinary web browsing to an onion service, use Tor Browser and the correct address. The useful choice depends on your goal, not on adding layers by default:

| Option | What it is for | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tor Browser alone | Browsing the web through Tor, including visiting onion services. | Protects traffic sent through Tor Browser, not every app on the device. It is the straightforward option for reaching an onion address. |
| VPN alone | Changing the network path or apparent location for traffic routed through the VPN. | Does not provide Tor’s relay-based routing or serve as a replacement for Tor when visiting an onion service. |
| VPN followed by Tor | A more complex route that puts the VPN connection before Tor. | Adds another service and configuration choices. Tor Project does not recommend routine use; the outcome depends on setup and threat model. |
| Tails | Using Tor for broader system traffic rather than only a browser. | Tor’s documentation points to Tails as an option for system-wide routing. It can be started from USB or DVD, but is unnecessary just to use Tor Browser. |
A VPN may be relevant to geolocation restrictions, but changing apparent location is not the same as anonymity. The right option also depends on which observer you are concerned about, whether you need an onion service, and whether browser-only routing is sufficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to access an onion service safely
- Get Tor Browser from the Tor Project. Use it for web browsing over Tor rather than routing an ordinary browser through Tor. Tor Browser includes privacy protections that other browsers may not have.
- Obtain the onion address from a trusted source. Prefer the organization that operates the service or a channel you already trust. Check the entire address carefully: current onion addresses use 56 letters and numbers followed by
.onion. Older 16-character v2 addresses no longer work on today’s Tor network. - Enter the address in Tor Browser. Check the URL bar and onion indicator to confirm that the connection is using an onion service. The indicator does not establish that the site is the organization you intended; verifying the address source remains important.
- Keep activity within Tor Browser. Tor Browser does not automatically route other apps. If you need broader system traffic to go through Tor, consult Tor’s documentation on staying anonymous and its guidance about Tails.
Common ways people undermine Tor privacy
- Using a different browser: Other browsers can expose a real IP address through DNS or WebRTC, reveal browser details through fingerprinting, or retain identifying information in cookies and cache. Use Tor Browser for browsing over Tor.
- Assuming every app is covered: Tor Browser protects traffic sent through it, not all traffic from the device. An application opened separately may connect outside Tor.
- Using torrents over Tor: Torrent clients can make direct connections that reveal identifying information.
- Adding browser plugins: Plugins can create privacy or identity leaks.
- Opening downloaded documents in external applications while online: A document opened outside Tor Browser may make network connections or expose identifying details.
- Identifying yourself to a site: Signing in or entering personal information can identify you to that service even if the connection uses Tor.
When a VPN-plus-Tor setup is a poor fit
If your aim is simply to reach an onion service, a VPN adds complexity without being necessary. If your aim is to route traffic from every app through Tor, Tor Browser alone does not do that; Tor’s documentation points to Tails as an option. If your aim is to change your apparent location, that is a different goal from anonymity. A combined setup should not be treated as a default privacy upgrade, particularly when you do not understand how both services are configured.
