Choose OnePlus BeaconLink if your group needs nearby, offline communication and everyone has a compatible OnePlus phone with the feature available. Choose Zello if you need internet-connected push-to-talk across Android, iPhone, or desktop. They solve different problems: BeaconLink is reported to use Bluetooth without cellular service or internet, while Zello works over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
How BeaconLink and Zello connect
OnePlus BeaconLink: nearby Bluetooth communication
“OnePlus Walkie-Talkie” refers here to BeaconLink, an offline calling feature reported for the OnePlus 12R. Android Authority reported on January 27, 2025, that the OnePlus 12R’s OxygenOS 15.0.0.500 update added BeaconLink for calls over Bluetooth to nearby people who also have the feature set up. That makes it relevant when cellular and internet service are unavailable, but communication is limited by direct device range. The report does not establish a dependable numerical range or support across all OnePlus models. Android Authority’s report

Zello: communication over the internet
Zello’s consumer app uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. Its stated reach therefore depends on internet connectivity, not a short direct Bluetooth link; it is not an offline fallback. Dead zones, network outages, service conditions, and device setup can still prevent communication. Zello describes the app as working over Wi-Fi and mobile data on its iOS page, and explains its internet-based service on its product site.

| Need | Better-supported fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby group without cellular or internet coverage | BeaconLink, conditionally | Reported to support offline Bluetooth calls; participants need compatible OnePlus phones with the feature available. Exact dependable range is not stated by Android Authority’s January 27, 2025 report. |
| Mixed Android and iPhone group | Zello | Zello offers Android and iOS apps, but the app’s communication model requires internet access. See its download page. |
| Desktop dispatch or work use | Zello | Zello offers desktop downloads and work-focused options; check the service’s current business terms for the features your organization needs. |
| Dedicated push-to-talk button or headset | Zello, after checking compatibility | Zello documents certified accessories, but certification and support depend on the exact accessory and phone. No BeaconLink accessory compatibility is established here. |
For a mixed-device group that has reliable internet, Zello is the more practical fit. For a group that must communicate without a network, BeaconLink is the relevant option only if everyone’s phone supports it. There is no controlled head-to-head evidence here comparing sound quality, latency, battery use, or reliability.

Check whether your OnePlus phone has BeaconLink
Availability is device- and rollout-dependent. The reported OnePlus 12R update is evidence for that model and rollout, not a promise that every OnePlus phone has the feature. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 page describes supported OS devices and says rollout timing can vary by device, country, and carrier, but it does not provide a BeaconLink compatibility matrix.
- Check your phone’s model and the software version installed.
- Review OnePlus update or support information for your model and region, then check whether the BeaconLink feature is available on your device.
- Have each participant check as well. The offline use case requires other people to have compatible phones and the feature set up.
Do not infer BeaconLink support merely from a phone’s inclusion on the OxygenOS 16 page; that page does not establish compatibility for this feature.
