The OnePlus 12 is the higher-spec phone. It has the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a 2K 120 Hz display, a 3x periscope telephoto camera and 50W wireless charging in North America. The OnePlus 12R counters with a slightly larger stated battery (5,500 mAh against 5,400 mAh), 80W wired charging and a much lower launch price. This guide sets out the differences from OnePlus’s own specification and launch material, and explains what that material does not prove.
OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12 at a glance
| Category | OnePlus 12R | OnePlus 12 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chipset | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | The 12 has the newer generation. No independent head-to-head benchmark is cited here, so day-to-day speed differences are not established. |
| Display | 6.78-inch, 2780 × 1264, LTPO 4.0, dynamic 1–120 Hz | 2K 120 Hz ProXDR display, per OnePlus product and launch pages | The 12 has the higher stated resolution. Both are 120 Hz panels. |
| Rear cameras | 50 MP Sony IMX890 main, 8 MP ultrawide, 2 MP macro | Fourth-generation Hasselblad system with a Sony LYT-808 wide sensor and a 3x periscope telephoto | The 12 has more versatile hardware, mainly the optical telephoto. Image quality has not been compared here. |
| Battery | 5,500 mAh (typical) | 5,400 mAh (typical) | The 12R has 100 mAh more on paper. That does not prove longer runtime. |
| Wired charging | 80W SUPERVOOC | 80W SUPERVOOC on North American pages | Equal in North America. OnePlus says some other markets get 100W on the 12. |
| Wireless charging | Not listed | 50W AIRVOOC in North America | Only the 12 adds wireless charging. |
Performance: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs 8 Gen 2
The 12 uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the 12R uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, so the 12 has the newer silicon. Neither OnePlus page offers an independent comparison, and I have not run benchmarks. Treat the gap as a matter of generation and future headroom, not a measured difference you will notice when scrolling or messaging.

Display
The 12R’s US specification page gives exact figures: 6.78 inches, 2780 × 1264 pixels, an LTPO 4.0 panel and a dynamic 1–120 Hz refresh range. OnePlus describes the 12’s screen as a 2K 120 Hz ProXDR display. The 12 is the higher-resolution option on paper. The 12R’s panel is still a high-refresh LTPO screen, so the step up is about sharpness and panel tier, not basic smoothness.

Cameras
OnePlus 12R
It has a 50 MP Sony IMX890 main camera, an 8 MP ultrawide and a 2 MP macro. The macro sensor adds little on a spec sheet, so the main camera is the one that matters.

OnePlus 12
It uses a fourth-generation Hasselblad camera system with a Sony LYT-808 wide sensor and a 3x periscope telephoto. If you take portraits or distant subjects, the optical zoom is the most practical hardware reason to prefer the 12. OnePlus’s materials do not show that the 12’s results are better in any specific scene, so judge sample photos before paying extra for the camera.
Battery and charging
The 12R’s page lists 5,500 mAh and the 12’s launch page lists 5,400 mAh, both as typical capacity. A 100 mAh gap is small, and chipset efficiency and display tuning also affect endurance. No controlled battery test is cited here, so neither phone can be called the longer-lasting one.
Both US pages show 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging. OnePlus’s January 23, 2024 launch release says the 12 charges at 100W in some markets and 80W in North America. Its North American announcement also lists 50W AIRVOOC wireless charging. Keep these figures tied to your region.

The 12R’s US specification page lists 8 GB/128 GB and 16 GB/256 GB configurations and calls the storage UFS 3.1. OnePlus’s January 2024 North American launch announcement described the 256 GB version as UFS 4.0. Because OnePlus’s own materials disagree, the live specification page, which carries a warning that product information can change, is the better reference. Confirm the storage type on the listing for the exact unit you are buying. Configurations also vary by country.
Price difference
On January 23, 2024, OnePlus announced that the 12R would go on sale in the US and Canada from February 13, 2024, starting at US$499.99 / CA$669.99. That was a launch starting price, not a current quote, and prices of both phones may have changed since.
I could not verify a current matched pair of prices, or a US launch price for the 12, so no dollar gap is stated here. To compare fairly, check both phones:
- in the same market and currency;
- at the same storage and RAM tier;
- in the same condition (new, open-box or refurbished) and from the same type of seller;
- as unlocked units or with the same carrier terms.
Which should you buy?
Choose the OnePlus 12 if
- you want optical 3x telephoto for portraits and distance shots;
- you value the sharper 2K display;
- you want wireless charging;
- you want the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for longer-term headroom.
Choose the OnePlus 12R if
- you mainly want a fast 120 Hz phone with a capable 50 MP main camera;
- wireless charging and a telephoto lens are not priorities;
- a lower price matters more than the extra hardware, once you have confirmed the actual price gap in your market.
The 12 is the better phone on specifications. Whether it is worth the extra money depends on how much of that hardware you will use, and on a price gap that only a current like-for-like check can settle.
