Run netsh wlan show drivers in Command Prompt or Terminal, then find Radio types supported in the output. If the list includes 802.11be, your laptop’s wireless adapter reports Wi-Fi 7 support. If the list tops out at 802.11ax, the adapter is Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, and a Wi-Fi 7 router won’t change that.
How to run the check on Windows
- Open Command Prompt or Terminal. You don’t need administrator rights for this command.
- Type
netsh wlan show driversand press Enter. - Scroll to the line labelled Radio types supported.
- Look for the standard names listed there.
Microsoft Support describes the step this way: you can check what your network adapter supports by opening Command Prompt (or Terminal) and typing that command.

How to read the result

This is the number that matters before you buy. Microsoft identifies 802.11be as Wi-Fi 7 and 802.11ax as Wi-Fi 6/6E. The command reports what the installed adapter and its driver say they support. It does not prove that the whole setup, from laptop to router, is ready for Wi-Fi 7.

Microsoft lists several requirements for using Wi-Fi 7 on a Windows PC. The adapter check covers only one of them.

- A Wi-Fi 7 wireless adapter in the laptop. This is what the command tests.
- A supporting router. Check the router’s documentation or the manufacturer’s website. When you shop, look for a Wi-Fi 7 label.
- Windows 11, version 24H2 or later. Microsoft says Wi-Fi 7 is available starting with this version. Older Windows builds fall short even if the hardware is capable.
- WPA3. Microsoft includes WPA3 among the requirements, so confirm that the router supports it.
What to do with your result
If 802.11be is listed
Your laptop’s hardware is a match for a Wi-Fi 7 router. Confirm that you’re on Windows 11 24H2 or later. Then, when you compare routers, look for a Wi-Fi 7 label, WPA3 support, and the coverage your home needs. Microsoft’s guidance tells you what to verify. It doesn’t say which router suits a particular home.
If only 802.11ax (or older) is listed
A Wi-Fi 7 router should still be able to connect your laptop as a Wi-Fi 6/6E device, but the laptop won’t use Wi-Fi 7 itself. Don’t buy a router expecting this laptop to get faster. Microsoft’s page covers compatibility and gives no performance measurements, so no speed gain can be promised either way. Other devices in your home may still benefit if they support Wi-Fi 7.

If the line is missing or the command shows nothing useful
This can happen with a desktop that has no Wi-Fi adapter, a disabled adapter, or a missing driver. Turn Wi-Fi on, make sure a wireless adapter is installed, and run the command again.
Scope of this check
These steps apply to Windows. Microsoft’s guidance is the basis here, and Windows feature availability can change in later releases. This article does not cover macOS, Linux, or laptop-maker utilities, and it ranks no router models.
