One-Year MBA vs. Two-Year MBA: Cost, Internships, and Career Options

A one-year MBA can save time for applicants with clear goals and business preparation; a two-year MBA often offers more room for internships, electives, and career exploration. Compare total cost and school-specific recruiting access before deciding.

A one-year MBA is usually the faster route for applicants with a strong business foundation and a clear career goal. A two-year MBA generally provides more time for electives, networking, and a summer internship—an advantage that can matter when changing careers. Neither format is automatically cheaper or better: compare the full cost, recruiting access, curriculum, and outcomes for the specific programs you are considering.

How the one-year and two-year formats differ

Program length describes a school’s design, not a standardized package of courses or costs. For example, SMU Cox lists its one-year MBA as 12 months and 52 credit hours, compared with 21 months and 71 credit hours for its two-year MBA. Babson also offers 12- and 21-month formats, but the way students use the calendar differs between them.

Program example One-year MBA Two-year MBA
SMU Cox 12 months; 52 credit hours. Estimated 2026–27 tuition and fees: $83,336. SMU Cox One-Year MBA 21 months; 71 credit hours. Estimated 2026–27 tuition and fees: $63,067 per year; includes a summer internship period. SMU Cox Two-Year MBA
Babson 12 months, with electives over 2½ semesters, a full summer course load, and a May start. Babson Full-Time MBA 21 months, with electives over four semesters. Summer may be used for an internship, coursework, or startup accelerators; the program starts in late August. Babson Full-Time MBA
Kellogg Accelerated format that builds on business fundamentals; students may bypass core classes. It is positioned for focused goals rather than a major career switch. Kellogg One-Year MBA Kellogg describes its two-year MBA as a traditional format with an internship. Kellogg Two-Year MBA

These examples are U.S.-based and illustrate why applicants should check the exact curriculum, start date, and eligibility rules for each degree. An accelerated MBA may assume prior coursework or business knowledge; if you need time to build foundational skills, an extra academic year can be useful rather than redundant.

Which format costs less?

There is no reliable universal rule that a one-year MBA costs less. Shorter enrollment can mean fewer months of living expenses and less time away from paid work, but published tuition figures may use different billing periods and may not include the same fees or expenses.

#1 Best Overall

SMU Cox estimates 2026–27 tuition and fees at $83,336 for its one-year MBA and $63,067 per year for its two-year MBA. The annual two-year figure is not the program total, so comparing it directly with the one-year figure would be misleading. The cited figures also do not, by themselves, establish complete cost of attendance for either option.

Build a like-for-like estimate for the full degree. Use the same academic year and account for:

  • Tuition for every required term and mandatory fees.
  • Housing, food, health insurance, travel, and other living expenses.
  • Scholarships and other aid, which reduce net cost.
  • Financing costs, if you expect to borrow.
  • Income and benefits forgone while studying, less any internship earnings.

Ask each school for its current total cost of attendance and clarify what is excluded. Then calculate the opportunity cost separately: a two-year program can mean a longer period without full-time earnings, while an internship may provide both relevant experience and pay.

How internships affect the choice

A summer internship is a structural feature of many two-year MBAs, not a guarantee that every student will secure a position. SMU Cox places an internship in the summer between its two academic years. Babson lists an internship as one possible use of the two-year program’s summer; students may instead take coursework or participate in startup accelerators.

Kellogg identifies its one-year MBA as an accelerated program with no internship. That makes it especially important to confirm whether a one-year option has a formal internship term, allows students to recruit for internships around its compressed calendar, or focuses recruiting on full-time roles.

For a career changer, an internship can provide a defined period to test a new industry or function and may create a path to a full-time offer. It does not ensure either an internship or conversion. Ask schools for the share of internship-seeking students who receive offers, how “seeking” is defined, and whether recruiting services and employer access differ by MBA format.

Career options and employment outcomes

Program descriptions can indicate whom a format is designed to serve, but they do not guarantee placement. Kellogg positions its one-year MBA for applicants with focused career goals who are not seeking a major career switch, while SMU Cox describes its two-year MBA as suited to career changers. Treat these as guidance about program fit, not promises of a particular job or salary.

Published employment figures also cannot show that one format performs better when schools report different cohorts and measures:

  • SMU Cox, two-year MBA Class of 2025: $126,000 median base salary and $25,000 average signing bonus. The school reports industry shares of 32% in consulting, 29% in financial services, 26% in technology, and 12% in real estate. These are outcomes for that cohort, not an individual forecast. SMU Cox Employment Statistics
  • Babson, 2025 full-time MBA outcomes: $110,000 median starting salary among U.S.-based landings; 80% accepted an offer within six months among those seeking. Babson also reports a $22,389 average signing bonus and says 16% of MBA students were working on their own venture. The reported populations and definitions matter when interpreting each figure. Babson Graduate Career Outcomes
  • Kellogg: Its employment page presents Class of 2025 two-year MBA industry and function outcomes and separate Class of 2026 internship data, including accepted internship offers by industry and monthly salary ranges. Those full-time and internship figures refer to different classes and should not be treated as one cohort. Kellogg Employment Statistics

When comparing employment reports, check the class year, cohort size, response and salary-reporting rates, offer timing, and whether results are separated by program format. Differences between schools’ headline salaries do not isolate the effect of MBA duration.

How to decide between the formats

A one-year program is worth closer consideration if you already have relevant business preparation, know the role or industry you are targeting, and value returning to work sooner. A two-year program may be a stronger fit if you need an internship recruiting cycle, want more time to explore electives and career paths, or are planning a substantial career transition.

Before choosing, compare the exact programs on these points:

  1. Total net cost: Request complete program cost estimates for the same academic year, then subtract applicable scholarships and aid.
  2. Time away from work: Include the full academic calendar and estimate the earnings and benefits you would forgo.
  3. Internship and recruiting eligibility: Ask whether the format includes an internship term and whether students in that degree can access internship recruiting, career coaching, job boards, and employer events.
  4. Curriculum and prerequisites: Check whether the accelerated degree assumes core-course knowledge you already have and whether the electives support your target role.
  5. Career evidence: Review employment-report definitions and cohorts rather than relying on a single salary or placement statistic.
  6. Personal constraints: Consider location, network, and any visa or work-authorization requirements relevant to your plans.

Ask admissions or career services directly: What is excluded from the published cost? What share of internship-seeking students receive offers? Are recruiting resources the same across formats? Do employment results distinguish one-year from two-year students? The answers are school-specific, and published figures should be read in the context of each program’s definitions and cohort.
