To extend your desktop, your computer must support another display connection—through a compatible dock, USB display adapter, or DisplayPort daisy chain, for example.
What one HDMI port can—and cannot—do
An HDMI port sends a video signal to a display. A basic HDMI splitter takes that signal and sends it to two screens, so both show the same content. Microsoft Support explains that a splitter duplicates the signal “instead of creating two independent signals” in its Windows external-monitor troubleshooting guide.

That makes a splitter useful for mirroring, such as showing the same presentation on two monitors. It is not a way to give each monitor its own workspace. If you want to move separate windows between screens, the computer needs to support an additional display output.
How to get two independent displays
Having one HDMI port does not necessarily mean your computer can drive only one external monitor. Check the computer’s graphics adapter specifications and all its available video-capable connections. Microsoft notes that an adapter may not support more than one monitor, and advises checking with its manufacturer; it also identifies a docking station or USB adapter as possible ways to connect additional displays.

Use a compatible dock or USB display adapter
A dock or adapter may provide another display connection, but it works only if the computer supports the required video feature and the accessory is compatible. For USB-C, check the specifications for the exact port, computer, adapter or dock, and cable. The USB-C connector’s shape alone does not show whether that port can carry video. Microsoft describes USB-C feature support as dependent on the hardware and software in its USB-C overview.
Before buying, confirm the supported number of displays and the resolution and refresh rate the complete setup can handle. Those limits depend on the specific computer, graphics hardware, dock or adapter, cable, and monitors; there is no universal specification for every USB-C or HDMI setup.

Use DisplayPort daisy chaining with compatible equipment
Some systems can connect monitors in a chain over DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST): the computer connects to one monitor, which passes the signal to the next. The computer and monitors must support the required DisplayPort and MST features, and the monitor connections must support the needed input/output arrangement. Microsoft’s Surface daisy-chaining instructions describe setting both displays to DisplayPort 1.2, sometimes called MST. This is a DisplayPort option—not a feature of an HDMI splitter.

Choose the connection that matches your goal

Set Windows to extend the desktop
- Connect the displays using the supported connection path for your computer and monitors.
- Press Windows+P and choose Extend. Choose Duplicate if you want both screens to show the same image.
- Open Settings > System > Display to detect displays if needed and arrange them to match their physical positions. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
If the second monitor is not working
- Both screens show the same thing: Check whether a splitter is duplicating the HDMI signal. For independent workspaces, use a display path supported by the computer.
- Windows does not detect a display: In Settings > System > Display, use the display-detection option, then verify that the port, adapter or dock, cable, and monitor support the connection you are using.
- A USB-C adapter produces no video: Confirm that the specific USB-C port supports the required video mode; not every USB-C port carries video.
- DisplayPort daisy chaining fails: Verify MST support, monitor input/output connections, and the monitor’s DisplayPort settings. On the Surface setup described by Microsoft, both displays use DisplayPort 1.2.
- The display works at an unexpected resolution or refresh rate: Check the specifications of every part in the chain. Compatibility and limits vary by model.
