A single LLM call is a good fit when the task is bounded, the relevant information is already available, and the model can return a useful result without waiting for an action to change what it observes. Use an iterative, stateful design when later steps depend on external results or continuity across turns. “One call” counts model requests; it does not rule out retrieval or other software work before the request.
What “one LLM call” means
It means sending one request to a language model for the task, rather than repeatedly asking the model to decide what to do next. The application may still prepare the prompt, retrieve relevant information, rank results, or run deterministic code before that request. Those steps do not themselves make the model interaction multi-turn.

This is a design principle, not a formal framework or a rule that one call is always preferable. The useful question is whether the model has enough information to produce the required result in one response.

Consider a one-request design for a bounded task whose inputs are known at the outset—for example, summarizing supplied material or drafting an answer from context already assembled by the application. It is most appropriate when the output does not need to be checked against new observations produced by the model’s actions.

External knowledge can still be prepared in advance. The 2025 PathHD paper describes retrieving and ranking knowledge-graph paths before a single LLM adjudication call. It reports 40–60% lower end-to-end latency and 3–5× lower GPU memory use for its method in its evaluation setting; those results are specific to that method and setup, not general evidence that one-call systems are faster or cheaper. When to use an iterative, stateful design
Use multiple interactions when an action changes what the system will observe next, or when the task needs continuity from one turn to another. A model navigating a changing web page, for instance, may need to inspect a page, act, and then respond to the newly observed page rather than answer from a fixed initial context.

Hugging Face TRL distinguishes stateless tool calls from environments that maintain state across turns. Its guidance points to environments when continuity matters, including interactions such as navigating a game or browsing a web page where later observations depend on earlier actions. How to choose
- Is the task bounded? If the required information is available before the request and the output can be produced directly, one call is a candidate.
- Will an action change the next observation? If the model must act and then react to an external result, use an interaction pattern that supports that loop.
- Must state persist? If later turns depend on prior actions or observations, use a stateful environment rather than treating each call as an isolated request.
- What does “tool use” mean here? A stateless tool action is not automatically the same thing as a persistent environment. Check whether the design preserves state and supplies new observations.
Product labels such as “agent” do not settle the choice. What matters is the behavior the task requires: fixed context and a direct result, or actions, new observations, and continuity.

Evaluate the design on the actual workload
Do not assume that fewer model requests guarantee lower cost, less latency, or better reliability. Compare candidate designs on the same workload and measure end-to-end task quality, model-request count, external calls, total latency, and cost. A one-call system may still perform retrieval or other work outside the model request, so counting model calls alone does not describe the whole system.

Llama 3.2’s model collection lists agentic retrieval and summarization as use cases, but that listing does not establish that one call is sufficient for either task. Llama 3.2 model collection The available evidence supports distinguishing stateless calls from stateful environments and treating PathHD as one specific retrieval-plus-adjudication example. It does not establish universal savings, a universally superior architecture, or a formal method called “one world, one LLM call.”
