If a reasonable change to the prompt changes the score or model ranking, a single leaderboard result can conceal that instability. Here, “one-shot” means evaluation using a single prompt or example configuration; it does not mean classical one-shot learning, where a model learns a new class or task from very few labeled examples.
What does a one-shot benchmark actually measure?
“One-shot” describes a test condition, not a complete evaluation method. A score is meaningful only alongside the setup that produced it: the prompt, task, data, scoring method, model configuration, and inference conditions. Without those details, readers cannot tell whether a result reflects a broad capability or success on one particular formulation.

A single result can still be useful as a baseline or as a check of a narrowly defined task. The problem is treating it as context-free evidence that one model is generally better. The title’s wording concerns one-shot prompting for LLM evaluation, not the separate classical machine-learning setting of one-shot learning.
Why can one prompt distort a model comparison?
Prompts are part of the test. Wording, instructions, and task framing can affect whether a model understands what is being asked and how its answer is scored. If two models respond differently to those choices, their order on a leaderboard may depend on the prompt rather than a stable difference in capability.

A study of instruction embedding models by Kostiuk and Enevoldsen illustrates this risk. The authors evaluated 6 models across 11 datasets, using 15 task-specific prompts per dataset: 990 prompts in total. They report that default prompts can overstate or understate performance, and that selecting a favorable prompt can change the leaderboard order. The finding is specific to the instruction embedding models and datasets they studied; it does not establish that every LLM benchmark or ranking is prompt-sensitive. Read the study.
That distinction matters: a benchmark may be perfectly reproducible under its published prompt and still provide a narrow view of performance. Reproducibility answers whether the same setup can be repeated; prompt sensitivity asks whether reasonable alternative setups produce a different result.
How to make a one-shot result more informative
Disclose the test setup
Report the exact prompt and example configuration, the dataset and task, scoring procedure, model version or configuration, and inference conditions. A score without these details is difficult to reproduce or compare fairly.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Test plausible prompt variations
Evaluate a preselected set of reasonable prompts rather than reporting only the best-performing one. Summarize the range or distribution of scores and say whether the ranking changes. The prompt-sensitivity study’s authors recommend testing multiple prompts or reporting sensitivity alongside a point estimate.
Separate the baseline from the broader claim
Label a single-prompt score as a result under that prompt. Avoid translating it into an unqualified claim about general capability unless other tasks and conditions support that conclusion.

It can broaden the test, but it is not a universal fix. Multi-problem evaluation puts several problems from one data source into a single prompt, allowing researchers to examine whether a model can handle them together. It tests a different condition from solving each problem separately and may expose strengths or weaknesses that a single problem misses.

In a 2025 paper, Zhengxiang Wang, Jordan Kodner, and Owen Rambow evaluated 13 LLMs from 5 model families using 53,100 zero-shot multi-problem prompts, drawing on 6 classification benchmarks and 12 reasoning benchmarks. They report: “Our results show that LLMs are capable of handling multiple problems from a single data source as well as handling them separately, but there are conditions this multiple problem handling capability falls short.” The authors’ result supports multi-problem evaluation as one useful test, not as a guarantee that combined testing is always better or more representative. Evaluation design also has to match the capability being studied. Continual few-shot learning, for example, concerns sequential tasks and uses task and dataset choices suited to that setting. A 2020 paper by Antreas Antoniou, Massimiliano Patacchiola, Mateusz Ochal, and Amos Storkey specifies SlimageNet64 as covering all 1,000 ImageNet classes, with 200 samples per class downscaled to 64 × 64. That dataset detail illustrates how a benchmark’s data and protocol define what it can measure; it is not evidence about LLM prompt sensitivity. Read the paper.
What to check before trusting a benchmark ranking
- Prompt sensitivity: Was the score measured with one prompt or a set of plausible prompts, and is variation disclosed?
- Task coverage: Does the test cover one isolated problem, multiple problems, or a broader range of tasks?
- Fit to the use case: Do the data and task resemble the capability or deployment question you care about?
- Ranking stability: Does the model order persist under reasonable changes to prompts or tasks?
- Transparency: Are the prompt, benchmark, samples, scoring method, and inference conditions reported?
A benchmark rank is most useful when read as a result from a defined setup. If the intended use differs from that setup—or if a small, reasonable change can reverse the ranking—the score alone is not enough to choose a model or predict its behavior.
