Check AT&T Fiber, Xfinity, and Astound at your address first; compare T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet if either is eligible. AT&T Fiber stands out where available for equal upload and download speeds, while cable and fixed wireless offer alternatives with different trade-offs.
Which internet providers should Chicago residents check?
Start with an address search for these providers, then compare the plans actually available to your building. Citywide availability figures are useful context, not a guarantee that a particular apartment or house can be connected.

- AT&T Fiber: A strong option where fiber is available, especially for households that upload large files, work on video calls, or want advertised upload speeds to match download speeds.
- Xfinity: A cable option with broad reported Chicago coverage and multiple speed tiers. The offer shown on the local page can vary by section and qualification, so use the checkout quote for your address.
- Astound Broadband: Offers cable service and advertises fiber in select neighborhoods. Its plan and bundle availability depend on the location and eligibility terms.
- T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet: Fixed-wireless alternatives if your address qualifies. Actual performance depends on the service capacity and signal conditions at the home.
The FCC’s National Broadband Map instructions explain that users can see providers serving a location, technologies, and offered speeds. Search the Chicago provider map for an initial view, then confirm with the provider’s own address checker. FCC map information is reported by internet providers and can be challenged when inaccurate.
What do Chicago provider plans and coverage look like?
The figures below are advertised prices, speeds, or provider-reported geographic estimates—not independent household speed-test results. Prices and eligibility can change, and an address check is essential.

| Provider | What the local offer or map reports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T Fiber | AT&T’s Chicago page lists Fiber 300 at $35/month, Fiber 500 at $50/month, and Fiber 1000 at $50/month; listed plans have equal download and upload speeds. It says speeds reach 5 Gbps where available. The Broadband Map estimates fiber availability across 74% of Chicago’s census area and reports up to 5,000/5,000 Mbps; those map estimates use FCC BDC data available as of December 2025, published May 2026 and revised through July 2026. | Fiber eligibility, current offer terms, taxes, and required autopay or paperless-billing discounts. The citywide estimate does not establish availability at an individual address. |
| Xfinity | The Chicago page shows 300 Mbps at promotional/everyday prices of $40/$75 and 500 Mbps at $45/$85 in different offer details; it also advertises a 300 Mbps offer with a five-year price guarantee. The Broadband Map reports up to 2,000/2,000 Mbps and 100% estimated availability for cable, based on FCC BDC data available as of December 2025, published May 2026 and revised through July 2026. | Which price and speed apply to the specific order, and the guarantee’s new-customer, autopay, billing, installation, tax, fee, and availability conditions. The map warns that coverage estimates and maximum advertised speeds may be overoptimistic. |
| Astound Broadband | Astound’s Chicago page says plans start at $30/month for 300 Mbps and describes fiber service in select neighborhoods, including parts of the North Side, Loop, West Loop, and Near South Side. The Broadband Map reports fiber up to 1,500/1,500 Mbps with 33% estimated availability and cable up to 1,500/50 Mbps with 57% estimated availability, using FCC BDC data available as of December 2025, published May 2026 and revised through July 2026. | Whether your address has fiber or cable, the total price, and any bundle requirements. Astound also advertises 1 Gig or higher bundled with an unlimited mobile line and eero mesh Wi-Fi; check what equipment and services are included. |
| T-Mobile 5G Home Internet | The Chicago service page describes a 5G gateway that combines modem and router functions and notes that capacity and congestion can affect speeds. The Broadband Map reports up to 498/55 Mbps and 100% estimated availability, based on FCC BDC data available as of December 2025, published May 2026 and revised through July 2026. | Address eligibility, current plan terms, gateway placement, signal quality, and data prioritization. Map maximums and area estimates do not predict a home’s performance. |
| Verizon 5G Home Internet | Verizon’s 5G Home page says the router is included and remains Verizon property, with return conditions when service ends. The Broadband Map reports up to 1,000/75 Mbps and 99% estimated availability, based on FCC BDC data available as of December 2025, published May 2026 and revised through July 2026. | Address eligibility, current plan terms, in-home signal, and router return requirements. Reported city availability is not a promise of indoor coverage or speed. |
A September 2026 FindBetterInternet comparison also lists AT&T Fiber up to 5,000 Mbps and Xfinity cable up to 2,000 Mbps, attributing coverage to FCC filings. Treat that as secondary comparison data, not an official recommendation or measured speed ranking.
How should you choose a plan for your household?
Do not choose the largest advertised speed by default. Match the connection to what your household does at the same time: video calls, streaming, gaming, remote work, and large uploads. Upload speed matters for sending files and live video; fiber’s symmetrical advertised tiers can be useful when those tasks are frequent. For ordinary browsing and mixed everyday use, compare less expensive tiers before paying for a maximum-speed plan.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Check the exact address and building. Use the FCC map for a first look, then each provider’s address checker. In an apartment, building wiring or a management agreement can limit the available choices.
- Compare connection types and speeds. Note whether each offer is fiber, cable, or fixed wireless, plus both download and upload speeds. For wireless, ask how eligibility and network management affect service.
- Compare the full bill, not just the headline rate. Include the post-promotion price, required discounts, taxes, fees, equipment, installation, and any bundle requirement. Xfinity’s local page presents differing offer details in different sections, making the address-specific checkout quote particularly important.
- Read the terms that can change your costs or flexibility. Check price-guarantee duration and conditions, contract or cancellation terms, and the data policy. For fixed wireless, also check capacity, gateway placement, prioritization, and equipment-return obligations.
- Check what Wi-Fi equipment is included. Internet service and Wi-Fi coverage inside the home are separate issues. Astound advertises an eero mesh Wi-Fi system with a qualifying internet-plus-mobile bundle, but mesh hardware is not required to buy internet and does not improve the underlying ISP connection. Check included equipment before purchasing additional hardware.
Why can your Chicago internet bill differ from a neighbor’s?
Two residents on the same block—or in the same building—may see different providers, technologies, or offers because availability is tied to the service address and building infrastructure. Promotions, eligibility rules, autopay requirements, equipment, installation charges, and taxes can also change the amount due. Anecdotal reports in a Chicago discussion such as “How much are you paying for internet?” illustrate the kinds of differences residents discuss; they are not representative price or satisfaction data.
