They are not one crew: each has a separate organization, and an Emperor’s reach can also come from subordinate groups, alliances, and islands or communities tied to that pirate through protection, political influence, or force.
Spoilers through the Wano and Onigashima events: the post-Wano lineup is Shanks, Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard), Monkey D. Luffy, and Buggy. A later manga chapter could change that status.

Who are the Yonko?
“Yonko” (四皇) is the common name for the Four Emperors: four influential pirate figures in the New World. The title describes a shifting balance of power, not membership in a shared organization. Each Emperor has a separate crew and may have other groups or territory connected to them.

After Wano, the four are Shanks, Blackbeard, Luffy, and Buggy. Before the story’s major successions, the group included Shanks, Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom. Whitebeard’s death preceded Blackbeard’s rise into the group; after Kaido and Big Mom were defeated, Luffy and Buggy became Emperors alongside Shanks and Blackbeard. ONE PIECE.com’s Wano Country Arc summary confirms Luffy’s victory over Kaido and his recognition as a new Emperor; the complete post-Wano roster is also listed in the secondary overview of the Four Emperors.

What makes an Emperor’s power more than personal strength?
The title is easier to understand by separating four kinds of connection. They can reinforce one another, but they do not mean the same thing.
- Core crew: the captain’s own pirate organization. Crews can have officers, divisions, subordinate groups, or fleets, but they do not all share one standard structure.
- Subordinates and fleets: other pirate groups may follow or support an Emperor. That relationship does not automatically make every member of those groups part of the captain’s core crew.
- Territory and protection: an island or community may be associated with an Emperor because it seeks protection, accepts political influence, or is controlled by force. The nature of the relationship matters.
- Alliances and coalitions: separate crews and communities can cooperate for a particular objective without merging into one lasting organization.
How do crews and territories differ?
A crew is an organization of pirates; territory is a place or community connected to an Emperor’s influence. A protected island is not a crew, and an occupied country is not necessarily a willing ally.
Rank #2
Big Mom’s story illustrates an island-centered empire, while the official Wano Country Arc summary describes Wano as dominated by Kaido’s Beasts Pirates, with its people suffering under that rule. These examples show why “controls” should not be used as a blanket description for every island linked to every Emperor: the relationship can involve protection or political allegiance, but it can also be coercive.

What alliances were made at Wano?
Kaido and Big Mom’s pact
Big Mom arrived in Wano and formed a pirate alliance with Kaido. It was an agreement between two Emperor-led organizations for a shared objective, not a permanent merger of the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom’s crew. Shueisha’s description of One Piece Volume 95 also frames Kaido’s alliance and the planned Onigashima raid as part of the Wano story.
The coalition against Kaido
The operation against Kaido brought together the Straw Hat Pirates, Heart Pirates, Minks, and samurai. This was a coalition of independent allies for a campaign, not a change in crew membership. The official ONE PIECE.com summaries of the Wano and Zou arcs describe the alliances and groups involved.

How did the Emperor lineup change?
| Story stage | Four Emperors | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier lineup | Shanks, Whitebeard, Kaido, Big Mom | The Four Emperors represented the earlier balance of power, as summarized in the secondary overview. |
| After Whitebeard’s death | Blackbeard rose into the group alongside Shanks, Kaido, and Big Mom | The succession overview places Blackbeard in the position that opened after Whitebeard’s death. |
| After Wano and Onigashima | Shanks, Blackbeard, Luffy, Buggy | Kaido and Big Mom were defeated; the official Wano summary says Luffy defeated Kaido and was recognized as a new Emperor. The secondary overview supplies the full post-Wano roster, including Buggy. |
After Wano, Luffy’s bounty rose to 3 billion berries, according to ONE PIECE.com’s Wano Country Arc summary. That is an in-story figure, not a real-world measure of pirate strength or a complete explanation of why the title changed hands.
Where can you read the story?
VIZ’s official One Piece manga page lists the series’ chapters and volumes and points readers to MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA for the latest free chapters available in their location. Access to free chapters depends on region. Shueisha’s One Piece Volume 95 listing identifies its Japanese release date as December 28, 2019, and describes the Kaido alliance and planned Onigashima raid.
