If the fault follows the original port, that port is a strong suspect—but the test alone does not prove its hardware has failed. Configuration, port state, speed or duplex settings, and equipment elsewhere in the connection can produce similar symptoms.
What the port-swap test can tell you
The comparison works by changing one variable: the switch port. Keep the cable, endpoint, link partner, and relevant settings as consistent as possible. Note whether the symptom follows the port, stays with the cable or endpoint, or changes when the setup changes.

A port-swap result is evidence, not a verdict. Cisco advises using a deliberate troubleshooting plan and checking known-good cables and ports rather than relying on trial and error. Cisco’s LAN switching troubleshooting guidance also cautions that a link light does not guarantee that a cable is fully functional.
How to run a controlled test
- Record the symptom. Note whether there is no link, an intermittent link, a lower-than-expected negotiated speed, or packet errors. Identify the exact ports at both ends and observe both devices.
- Check the connection and port states. Inspect and reseat both connectors; look for loose seating, dirt, or damage. Confirm that both ports are enabled and not administratively shut down or in an error-disabled state. Status names and commands vary by switch model.
- Use a cable you know works, if available. Use the right cable type for the equipment and connection. A link light alone is not enough to declare a suspect cable good.
- Move only the switch-side connection. Keep the same cable and endpoint, and connect them to a known-good enabled port. Check for link at both ends, negotiated speed and duplex where available, flaps, and error-counter behavior over a comparable interval.
- Reverse the comparison when practical. Test the known-good port with the same endpoint and known-good cable, then test the suspect port under the same conditions. Change one variable at a time so the outcomes remain interpretable.
- Compare the result. If the symptom follows the cable, investigate the cable and its route. If it repeatedly follows the original port with the other variables controlled, investigate that port’s settings, state, counters, logs, and diagnostics.
Moving a production connection can interrupt service. Plan the test for an appropriate maintenance window or use a noncritical connection; a diagnostic method does not guarantee zero disruption.

What to inspect when the symptom remains
If it appears to follow the cable or path
Inspect the cable, connectors, patch panel, and any media converter or other equipment between the endpoint and switch. For a long or difficult-to-access copper run, a suitable cable tester can add useful evidence. It is optional for a basic port swap: trying another port or testing with a known-good cable in a local setup may be more practical. Do not assume that every inexpensive continuity tester verifies full cable performance.
If it appears to follow the port
Check whether the port is administratively enabled and whether it has entered a protected or error-disabled state. Compare its configuration with the known-good port, including relevant VLAN, speed/duplex, PoE, port-security, and trunk settings. Review status, logs, and error counters for the same observation period. Cable damage and speed/duplex mismatch can cause errors, but no single counter proves a port is defective.

Only draw a hardware conclusion after configuration and state have been checked and the problem persists under comparable conditions. Use diagnostics and instructions for the exact switch model and software version. Cisco’s examples for Catalyst platforms are not universal commands or status labels; consult the documentation for your own equipment. Cisco’s switch-port troubleshooting guidance covers checking both ends, interface status and counters, known-good cables and ports, and configuration-related causes.

A link indicator shows that a link has been established; it does not certify the cable or prove that traffic is error-free. A marginal connection may show one-sided link, flap intermittently, negotiate at a reduced speed, or accumulate errors. Check both endpoints and compare status and counters rather than treating one light or one counter as conclusive.

The test is also weaker if the replacement port has a different role or configuration. A change in VLAN, speed/duplex, PoE, port security, or trunking can change the outcome without a hardware fault. Keep those conditions comparable, or account for the difference when interpreting the result.
