How to Remove the White Bar at the Bottom of a Samsung Screen

If the narrow white or gray line at the bottom of your Galaxy screen is the gesture hint, you can hide it on One UI 6.0 by turning off Gesture hint. Samsung says that control is not available on One UI 6.1 or later. You can still use gesture navigation on newer versions, or switch back to visible navigation buttons. A line that persists in unrelated screens or appears with other display problems may have a different cause.

First, identify what the white bar is

On many Galaxy phones, the line at the bottom is a software indicator for gesture navigation. It marks the area used for navigation; it is not necessarily a fault or damage to the display. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause, so consider whether it behaves like a navigation control and whether it appears alongside other display problems.

Samsung’s navigation instructions apply across Galaxy phones and tablets, but the available screens and settings can vary by carrier, software version, and model. If a menu path below does not match your device, search Settings for Navigation bar.

Hide the gesture hint on One UI 6.0

On One UI 6.0, Samsung documents a Gesture hint control that hides the lines at the bottom while leaving gesture navigation enabled.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display, then Navigation bar.
  3. Select Swipe gestures.
  4. Turn off Gesture hint.

With the older three-zone layout described by Samsung, swipe up from the left side for Recents, the center for Home, and the right side for Back. If your device shows different controls, follow the labels on its Navigation bar screen.

What changes on One UI 6.1 or later

Samsung’s US support article states: “Gesture hints are not available on devices running One UI 6.1 or later.” That means the One UI 6.0 instruction to turn off Gesture hint does not apply to those versions. You can choose Swipe gestures at Settings > Display > Navigation bar, but Samsung’s documented gestures work without a bottom hint:

Choose gestures or the classic navigation buttons

Choice What you get When it may suit you
Swipe gestures Navigation uses swipes instead of the three buttons. On One UI 6.0, Gesture hint can be turned off; Samsung says that option is unavailable on One UI 6.1 or later. You prefer gesture navigation and, on One UI 6.0, want to hide the bottom hint.
Buttons Visible Recents, Home, and Back controls. You prefer controls you can see and tap, or find gestures less comfortable.

To restore the buttons, open Settings > Display > Navigation bar and select Buttons. Samsung notes that the navigation bar can be hidden temporarily in some full-screen apps; swipe up from the bottom to bring it back when that happens.

If the real problem is hard-to-use gestures

If an update made the gesture areas feel narrower, that is a different issue from hiding the indicator. Samsung describes gesture-sensitivity changes on some Circle to Search-capable devices, beginning with One UI 6.1 on other models and One UI 6.1.1 on Galaxy S24 series. The behavior and available controls depend on model and software.

Samsung lists a Navigation bar gesture-sensitivity control. Its Canada support guidance also describes an optional Good Lock route: Good Lock > Make up > Home Up > Task Changer > Bottom gestures sensitivity setting. This is a sensitivity adjustment, not a required step for removing a hint, and the options may not be available on every device. See Samsung Canada’s gesture-range guidance for the described path.

If the setting is missing or the line remains

  • Search Settings for Navigation bar rather than relying on a path that may differ by model or software.
  • Check your One UI version: Samsung documents turning off Gesture hint for One UI 6.0, but says the control is unavailable on One UI 6.1 or later.
  • If the bar remains in unrelated contexts or coincides with other signs of display damage, do not assume the navigation setting is responsible. Samsung’s older regional service guidance says menu names and layouts may vary by model and software: Samsung Electronics Service navigation-bar instructions.
