One API for GPT and Claude, Without Pretending They’re Interchangeable

You can build one interface for GPT and Claude, but the native APIs differ. Here is an adapter design that keeps those differences visible.

You can put one interface in front of OpenAI’s GPT models and Anthropic’s Claude models, but the two native APIs are not interchangeable and no official compatibility layer makes them so. The workable design is a shared internal contract for the behavior your application actually needs, with a provider-specific adapter for each vendor and an explicit, visible way to handle features that only one side supports.

What “one API” can actually mean

People use the phrase for three different things, and they carry very different risks. Before you design anything, decide which one you are building.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Approach What it is What you gain Main risk
Facade in your application An internal request and response type that your product code uses. You write one adapter per provider. You control the contract, and provider details stay out of business logic. You maintain every adapter yourself and must track each provider’s changes.
Third-party gateway A separate service that accepts one request format and translates it to one or more providers. One endpoint and shared configuration for routing, keys, and logging. Another dependency in the data path, and feature coverage is limited to what the gateway implements.
Native compatibility A provider’s API accepts the other provider’s request format directly. Existing client code could work unchanged. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish that OpenAI or Anthropic offers this. Anthropic describes the Claude API as its own REST API with official SDKs.

The first option is the one this article assumes. It is the most controllable, and it makes the differences between providers visible instead of hiding them behind a wrapper that quietly drops or fakes features.

Why the native surfaces do not line up

OpenAI currently offers two text-generation surfaces that differ from each other. Its migration guide, titled “Migrate to the Responses API,” says that while Chat Completions remains supported, Responses is recommended for all new projects. Responses represents output as typed items, including message items and function-call items. Chat Completions uses a message array and can return multiple choices. The guide calls out differences in structured-output configuration (text.format versus response_format), function-calling shape, streaming events, and conversation-state management.

Claude’s API is a separate REST API with its own request and response conventions. Anthropic’s Claude API overview says the official SDKs handle authentication, request formatting, and error handling, and it identifies streaming and Message Batches as supported modes. Copying OpenAI field names into Claude requests, or the reverse, is the most common source of bugs in this kind of integration.

The practical consequence is that any shared layer has to translate, not just rename. Two things that look similar, such as “a tool call” or “a streamed response,” can differ in identifiers, nesting, event boundaries, and what counts as a finished turn.

The adapter boundary

A workable design passes data through four stages. Keep the stages separate so that a provider change touches one adapter and nothing else.

  1. Internal request. Your application builds a provider-neutral request: messages, tool definitions, an optional output schema, generation limits, and a requested capability set.
  2. Provider adapter. The adapter maps that request onto the native shape for the chosen provider and endpoint. It rejects or flags anything the target model or endpoint cannot do, rather than dropping it.
  3. Provider response or event. The native reply, or each streamed event, is kept as received so it can be logged and debugged.
  4. Normalized result plus metadata. The adapter returns a common result type (text, tool calls with stable IDs, parsed output, usage, stop reason) and a separate metadata object holding provider-specific details such as native event types, raw identifiers, and any features that were unavailable.

The metadata object is what keeps differences visible. Product code can ignore it in the common path and inspect it when it needs a provider-specific feature.

Comparing the native surfaces feature by feature

The table below compares the areas where the two sides differ most. Where the sources reviewed for this article do not establish a value, the cell says so instead of guessing. Check the current API references before you rely on any cell, because schemas change.

Area OpenAI (Responses; Chat Completions noted where different) Claude API (Messages)
Request shape Responses takes input and returns typed items. Chat Completions takes a message array. REST API with official SDKs. Request formatting is handled by the SDK, per Anthropic’s overview.
Output representation Responses: typed items such as message and function-call. Chat Completions: message array that can contain multiple choices. Not detailed in the overview reviewed. Use the current Messages API reference for block types.
Tool calls and results Function calls arrive as function-call items (Responses) or as tool-call fields on a message (Chat Completions), and results are sent back under the matching call identifier. Tool use and tool results are correlated by identifiers in the Messages API. Confirm exact block names and ID fields in the current reference.
Structured output JSON Schema output, configured with text.format in Responses and response_format in Chat Completions. Not established in the sources reviewed for this article. Check whether the target model and endpoint support a schema option before assuming one.
Streaming Typed streaming events. Event names and sequence differ between Responses and Chat Completions. Streaming is supported, per Anthropic’s overview. Event types are defined in the API reference.
Conversation state The migration guide identifies state management as a point of difference. Check which surface you are using and how it carries prior turns. The Messages API is request-based: the caller sends the conversation history it wants the model to see. Confirm this against the current reference for your use case.
Modalities Model-dependent. OpenAI’s model comparison lists image input per model. Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article.
Batch processing Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article. Message Batches for asynchronous, high-volume work. Anthropic’s overview states a 50% cost reduction for batch processing. Confirm current terms and eligibility on the live pricing page.

Two rows need extra care. Model and endpoint support varies: OpenAI’s model comparison documentation lists capabilities such as streaming, function calling, structured outputs, and image input per model, and those lists change over time. Do not infer that a feature exists on one model because it exists on another, and do not assume a Claude model supports something because the overview does not mention it.

Structured output: what the evidence supports

OpenAI’s announcement “Introducing Structured Outputs in the API,” dated August 6, 2024, describes a feature that makes model outputs conform to developer-supplied JSON Schemas. It reports that gpt-4o-2024-08-06 achieved 100% reliability in OpenAI’s evaluations, compared with under 40% for gpt-4-0613. Those are OpenAI’s own evaluation results on the schemas it tested. They are not a guarantee for other models, other providers, your schemas, or your production traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a cross-provider design, that means you should write your own schema tests, run them against each target model, and treat schema conformance as a property you verify rather than one you assume. If a provider does not offer schema-constrained output for a given endpoint, the adapter should fall back explicitly. A common fallback is to request JSON in the prompt, validate the result locally, and retry on failure, and the caller should be told that the guarantee is weaker.

Cost: compare workloads, not token rows

A single price row is not a comparison. OpenAI publishes token-based pricing by model and category, and it notes that built-in tool charges may apply in addition to model token rates. Anthropic’s batch discount applies to a different kind of workload than a live request path. Cached input, output tokens, batch usage, and tool calls can each change the total.

Build the comparison from your own workload:

  • Write a representative prompt set with the same average input length, output length, and tool usage you expect in production.
  • Price each candidate model from the current published rate for each category you use: input, cached input, output, and any tool fees.
  • Separate synchronous traffic from batch-eligible traffic, since they may be priced differently.
  • Re-run the calculation on the day you make the decision, because published rates change.

Deployment options and what they do not guarantee

Anthropic names Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry as platforms for Claude Platform API workloads. That matters if your data-handling or procurement rules require a particular cloud. It does not mean those platforms expose the same endpoints, features, or model versions as the direct Claude API, and it does not mean they behave identically to one another. Confirm the feature matrix on the platform you will use, not only on Anthropic’s own documentation.

A testing checklist before you switch or route traffic

This article reports no benchmark results. The checklist below is a recommended test plan for any shared interface. Run each item against every provider and model you plan to support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ordinary text. Same prompt, same parameters, compare the normalized result and the metadata.
  • Tool round-trip. Define one tool, force a call, return a result under the correct identifier, and confirm the model completes the turn.
  • Schema-constrained output. Validate every response against your schema, including edge cases such as optional fields and long strings.
  • Streaming completion. Confirm the adapter reports completion only after the provider’s final event, and that partial text is never saved as a finished answer.
  • Errors. Force a rate-limit response, an invalid request, and a timeout. Confirm each maps to a distinct error type with the provider’s original code preserved in metadata.
  • Multi-turn state. Send a second turn that depends on the first, and confirm the adapter includes the prior context the provider expects.
  • Unsupported features. Request a capability the target model does not support and confirm the adapter fails visibly or falls back as documented, rather than silently ignoring it.
  • Workload cost. Run the representative prompt set and record usage per provider.

The architecture rule

Expose a common subset for code that should be portable: text generation, tool definitions with results, a basic output schema, streaming text, and usage reporting. Put anything that is not common behind an explicit provider extension, so a caller who asks for it knows it is provider-specific. When a feature is missing on one side, make the adapter report that absence, and let the application decide whether to switch providers, degrade the feature, or stop. That rule keeps the convenience of one interface without pretending the two APIs are the same.
