Arthur Blank’s Atlanta City FC is joining the National Women’s Soccer League because the owner decided the timing was right—not because the league had stopped pursuing him. NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said the league’s message during earlier expansion discussions was simple: “You let us know when you’re ready to do this with us.”
The franchise was officially granted in November 2025. Atlanta and an unnamed Columbus club are described as the NWSL’s 17th and 18th clubs, following Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC, which begin play in 2026.

Why Blank finally moved ahead with an NWSL team
Berman said NWSL officials met Blank several years ago while the league was evaluating expansion. Rather than impose a deadline, the league waited for Blank to decide that he could make the necessary commitment. Her account presents Atlanta’s entry as a long courtship that ended when ownership readiness matched the league’s opportunity.

Blank already had a major soccer operation through his investment in Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United. That experience gave his organization familiarity with building a club, operating a stadium environment and developing a market around professional soccer. The Blank family’s reputation for community-oriented operations was also central to the league’s confidence. Berman described the family as “under promisers and over deliverers.”

Atlanta’s launch showed unusually strong local interest
Blank said approximately 15,000 people attended Atlanta City FC’s Sunday brand launch. He characterized the event as five times larger than any previous NWSL brand launch. Those figures are claims made during the panel discussion, not an independently audited attendance record.

Even with that qualification, the launch gives the league a clear signal: Atlanta can supply a large initial audience for a women’s professional soccer brand. The more important test will be whether that opening turnout converts into recurring match attendance, season-ticket commitments, youth participation and a durable supporter culture.

What the expansion says about the NWSL’s business trajectory
Panel coverage said the average NWSL club valuation had grown threefold in a couple of years. The report attributes that figure to the NWSL’s 2026 expansion discussion and does not publish the underlying calculation or an independent audit. It should therefore be read as a stated indicator of rising commercial interest, not as a standardized valuation index.

Atlanta’s addition combines that broader investment story with a recognizable ownership group and an established soccer market. It also gives the league another large U.S. city in which to develop sponsorships, media attention and community programs. Expansion alone does not guarantee financial success; clubs still need competitive teams, accessible pricing, reliable venues and local marketing that lasts beyond the launch.
Why the NWSL is discussed alongside MLS and the WNBA
The comparisons are about league-building models rather than identical competitions. MLS provides the most direct soccer analogy for Blank because Atlanta United established his organization’s soccer operating experience. The WNBA is a useful women’s-sports comparison because both leagues are trying to turn growing attention into lasting franchises, recognizable stars and deeper local support.

Atlanta can help that effort by giving the league another major platform, but a new crest does not automatically create national stars. The NWSL will need consistent storytelling, accessible broadcasts and sustained promotion of players across markets. For Atlanta City FC, that means building identities around its own squad while contributing to the league-wide effort to make the competition’s talent easier for casual fans to follow.
What is the Crest Cup?
U.S. Soccer announced the Crest Cup, a competition named after Blank and modeled on the U.S. Open Cup. The announcement did not include a start date. Until U.S. Soccer publishes a schedule and format, the cup’s participating teams, calendar and relationship to the NWSL season remain unspecified.
