The project says it addressed them with a low-spread guard, explicit authorization scope, a reviewed-first ranking rule, and deployment changes. These are the author’s and project’s accounts, not independently reproduced results or a third-party security audit.
What happened, and how strong is the evidence?
Vineet Wagh’s October 1, 2026 post-mortem describes OmniJudge, a platform for scoring and ranking hackathon projects. Its opening scenario involves 40 projects, 30 judges, and four tracks; those are figures from the author’s account, not independently verified event statistics. The incident report covers scoring, judge access, ranking, and container startup. The project’s GitHub repository describes the intended safeguards and some operational limitations. Read Wagh’s post-mortem.

How did floating-point drift become a huge normalized score?
OmniJudge reportedly combined weighted criterion scores and then normalized scores across judges using a Modified Z-score based on the median absolute deviation (MAD). The project README gives the formula as 0.6745 × (score − median) / MAD. The multiplier is the project’s stated normal-distribution scaling factor.

Wagh reports that two composites intended to be mathematically equivalent differed by about one unit in the last place (ULP), approximately 2.22 × 10⁻¹⁶ around the values in the incident. Because that difference was nonzero, the panel’s MAD was tiny rather than exactly zero. An exact mad === 0 check therefore did not stop division by a near-zero value. The post-mortem reports that the resulting normalized score reached roughly 3 × 10¹⁵; that is the author’s incident-specific figure, not an independently measured benchmark.
The project describes a finite-number check and an epsilon guard: when MAD is below 10⁻⁹, the implementation returns neutral zero scores rather than dividing by a near-zero spread. The threshold is stated in the repository README, viewed October 7, 2026. It is an implementation choice, not a universal statistical constant.
Why use median and MAD?
A mean and standard deviation can be pulled substantially by extreme observations. Median and MAD are more resistant to outliers, which can make Modified Z-scores useful when comparing judges whose scoring patterns differ. But normalization only changes scores relative to the comparison group chosen by the system. It cannot, by itself, prove that judges are unbiased, that the cohorts are comparable, or that the event’s grouping and scoring rules are statistically sound.

| Choice | What it handles | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Mean and standard deviation | Summarizes a group around its average and spread. | Extreme observations can have a strong influence. |
| Median and MAD | Provides a more outlier-resistant center and spread for the Modified Z-score. | A zero or near-zero MAD still requires explicit handling; normalization does not establish fairness. |
| Exact-zero check | Detects a MAD that is exactly zero. | Does not catch a tiny nonzero value caused by floating-point differences. |
| Epsilon threshold | Treats values below a chosen tolerance as effectively too small to normalize safely. | The tolerance must be chosen for the scale and behavior of the application. |
How did an undefined Prisma filter affect judge access?
The post-mortem says the judge-page query supplied undefined as trackId when a judge had no assigned tracks. In the reported Prisma behavior, an undefined filter was omitted from the query rather than interpreted as a deny-all condition. The result, according to the author, was that a judge without an assignment could see all projects.
The stated repair was to pass an explicit in filter even when the assigned-track list is empty, so the empty scope remains explicit, and to check team membership so a judge cannot review their own team’s project. The repository also describes server-side route checks and relational conflict-of-interest defenses. These describe the project’s implementation; they are not proof from an independent audit that every route or access path is safe.
Why explicit empty scope matters
Authorization should fail closed: no assigned tracks should mean no projects in scope, not an absent condition that broadens the query. In systems using optional query values, distinguish “no filter supplied” from “the user is authorized for an empty set.” Enforce that distinction on the server, and separately check conflicts such as judging one’s own team.

Why did the ranking rule need to account for unreviewed projects?
The reported ranking problem was not a calculation error. A project with no reviews received a neutral normalized score of zero, which could place it above a reviewed project whose normalized result was negative. The repository describes an ordering invariant that ranks projects with at least one review ahead of projects with none, then compares scores and handles ties deterministically.

The project’s reported reviewed-first rule preserves it, while deterministic tie handling makes equal-score ordering reproducible rather than dependent on incidental query order.
What went wrong in the Alpine container?
Wagh reports choosing node:20-alpine and encountering a Prisma engine binary-target mismatch associated with Alpine’s musl libc and OpenSSL 3. The described remedy was to declare a musl/OpenSSL Prisma binary target and install OpenSSL in both build and runtime stages. The post-mortem also names three startup issues: a shell entrypoint with CRLF line endings that broke its shebang, a missing /data directory for the SQLite file, and database initialization problems in fresh ephemeral containers.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did the offline architecture gain—and give up?
The author says the team removed WebSockets and Redis to meet a single-container, air-gapped runtime goal. The replacement described in the post-mortem uses HTTP transactions, an append-only SQLite audit log, and asynchronous webhooks. The repository presents offline operation as a design goal, not an independently verified guarantee that every deployment is fully offline or has no failure states.

The trade-off is operational simplicity at the cost of constraints that matter when scaling out. The project notes SQLite’s single-writer behavior as a concurrency limitation, and says its in-memory rate limiting does not coordinate across multiple application instances. A Redis-backed distributed design would add an external operational dependency but could provide shared state across instances; the sources provide no independent performance benchmark to establish which architecture is faster or better for every workload.

CSV export and spreadsheet formula injection
The post-mortem says the CSV export prefixes formula-like text inputs while preserving negative numeric values, then applies RFC 4180 quoting for commas, quotes, and newlines. The repository lists formula-injection protection in the export route. This is the project’s reported approach, not proof that all spreadsheet applications or malicious input patterns are covered. CSV quoting protects file structure; it should not be confused with neutralizing every formula interpretation a spreadsheet may apply.
What the post-mortem does—and does not—show
The useful lesson is that correctness depends on more than the central scoring formula. Tiny numeric spreads need deliberate handling; authorization filters must preserve the meaning of an empty scope; ranking must distinguish unreviewed work from reviewed results; and container startup must account for native libraries, scripts, and persistent paths. OmniJudge’s account is a concrete example of those failure classes and the project’s stated responses. It does not independently establish the fixes’ completeness, the platform’s security, or the statistical adequacy of its judging design.
