Ollama vs. LM Studio: Which Local LLM Runner Should You Use?

Ollama suits terminal-first local model workflows; LM Studio suits graphical model discovery and chat. Compare their APIs, headless options, and platform requirements before choosing.

Choose LM Studio if you want a graphical way to discover, download, load, and chat with local models, alongside documented developer tools. Choose Ollama if you prefer terminal commands and a straightforward local API workflow. Both can run models on your own computer; neither is a universal winner, and official documentation does not establish that one is faster or produces better answers in general.

Your operating system, available memory, GPU support, chosen model, and preferred way of working matter more than a blanket ranking. Here is how to compare them.

What is the practical difference between Ollama and LM Studio?

Both are tools for running language models locally. To use a model locally, you need its weights available on your machine and enough system or graphics memory for the model and its context. LM Studio describes a workflow of downloading model weights, loading them into memory, and chatting in the app’s Chat tab. Its getting started guide explains that flow.

The clearest day-to-day distinction is the interface: LM Studio centers a desktop app and also offers command-line and developer options; Ollama’s quickstart emphasizes pulling and running models from a terminal, with a local API for other software. Either can be used beyond its most obvious workflow, so compare the particular features you need rather than treating either as GUI-only or developer-only.

What developer interfaces do they provide?

LM Studio

LM Studio documents a native REST API under /api/v1/*, OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible endpoints, JavaScript and Python SDKs, CLI model management, and MCP features. Its REST API documentation and broader developer documentation describe the available interfaces. For a deployment without the desktop app, its headless documentation covers llmster, including use on servers, cloud instances, and CI.

Ollama

Ollama documents a local API at http://localhost:11434/api, plus OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic client options. Its API introduction distinguishes local use from direct cloud API access: local requests do not need an API key, while direct cloud requests do. These are different execution paths; using a hosted service should not be described as local inference.

Will your computer run the model you want?

Check both the runner’s operating-system and hardware guidance and the requirements of the model itself. Support can differ by OS, processor architecture, GPU, driver, and runtime; having a supported runner does not guarantee that every model will fit comfortably in memory.

LM Studio requirements

LM Studio’s system requirements page lists Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs running macOS 14 or later, recommends 16 GB or more of RAM for Apple Silicon, and says Intel Macs are not currently supported. For Windows, it lists x64 and Snapdragon X Elite ARM, requires AVX2 for x64, and recommends at least 16 GB of system RAM and 4 GB of dedicated VRAM. For Linux, it lists x64 and ARM64, distributes an AppImage, and specifies Ubuntu 20.04 or later. These are the page’s published requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that every model will run well.

Ollama requirements

Ollama’s platform instructions are separate: its macOS documentation lists Sonoma 14 or later and Apple M-series CPU/GPU support, as well as x86 CPU-only support. Its Windows documentation lists Windows 10 22H2 or later and describes NVIDIA and AMD GPU support with driver and backend considerations. Consult its GPU support page for NVIDIA compute-capability and driver guidance. Accelerator support is not identical across operating systems.

Use model-specific memory guidance

As one example, Ollama’s quickstart says the Gemma 4 E2B download is about 7.2 GB and recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or Mac unified memory for that example. It also notes that larger context windows need more memory. Those figures describe that model example, not a minimum for Ollama, LM Studio, or all local models.

Is one faster or better at answering questions?

There is no general winner established by the official sources for speed or answer quality. Results depend on factors such as the model and its quantization, context length, settings, workload, and hardware. A meaningful comparison uses the same model and settings on the same machine for the task you actually care about.

  1. Choose a model available to both runners and confirm it fits your machine.
  2. Match the model version or quantization, context size, and generation settings as closely as each tool permits.
  3. Run the same prompts or workload on the same hardware, then compare response quality and performance for your use case.

How to make the choice

  • Start with LM Studio if visual model discovery and in-app chat are central, or if its documented SDKs, API options, MCP features, or headless service match your integration.
  • Start with Ollama if terminal-based model pulls and runs, and its local API pattern, suit your workflow.
  • Before installing, verify your exact OS release, architecture, RAM or unified memory, GPU and VRAM, and driver against the live platform documentation.
  • Before downloading a model, check its size and memory needs, including the effect of the context length you plan to use.

Platform support, driver guidance, model availability, download sizes, and API features can change. The linked vendor documentation is the place to confirm current details for your machine.
