AMD does not set one universal number of support years for Radeon GPUs. Support depends on the GPU generation and the kind of maintenance: some products move to a legacy state with no further driver updates planned, while AMD says Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards continue to receive new-game support and other updates on a dedicated driver branch.
What “support” means for an older Radeon
A driver being available is not the same as receiving every kind of ongoing support. When assessing an older card, separate these questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Driver availability: Is there a compatible package for the exact GPU and operating system?
- New-game support: Does AMD list the card for a new release or provide a game-specific optimization?
- Maintenance: Are stability, security, or bug fixes still being issued?
- Game performance: Can the card run a particular game at acceptable settings? Driver support alone does not answer this.
AMD’s policy and release notes do not establish a guaranteed service life or an age-based cutoff for all Radeon cards. A card’s generation and its current support branch are more useful clues than its age alone.
How support differs by Radeon generation
Products designated legacy
AMD says some older graphics products have moved to a legacy support model and that it has no plans for further driver updates for those products. Its guidance is to keep the installed driver or install the final driver AMD made available. AMD does not define legacy status using a published number of years since launch. AMD’s legacy graphics guidance explains the recommendation.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Polaris and Vega
Polaris and Vega were still included in an AMD Windows driver package dated May 21, 2026. The Adrenalin 26.5.2 release notes list Radeon VII, RX Vega, RX 500/500X, and RX 400 series compatibility. They also note an intermittent Apex Legends crash issue affecting RX 400/500 products. This is evidence of a compatible package and game-related maintenance at that date, not proof that these GPUs receive the same new-game support or optimization cadence as newer cards. See the Adrenalin 26.5.2 release notes.
Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000
AMD said on November 2, 2025 that RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards would continue receiving “Game support for new releases,” “Stability and game optimizations,” and “Security and bug fixes.” AMD described these GPUs as moving to an optimized driver path distinct from RX 7000 and RX 9000. The distinction is a separate branch, not an announcement that support has ended. AMD’s clarification on RX 5000 and RX 6000 support provides the details.

A later example is Adrenalin 26.9.2, whose compatibility list includes RX 5000 and RX 6000 alongside RX 7000 and RX 9000. Its notes identify a War Thunder timeout issue on RX 5000 and recommend version 26.9.1 for affected users. Being listed in a driver package does not mean every game will be free of bugs. Check the Adrenalin 26.9.2 release notes.

Operating-system compatibility
Compatibility can vary by product. AMD’s Polaris/Vega Adrenalin 25.8.1 notes list Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later, while warning that operating-system support differs by specific Radeon product. Those version details apply to that release’s stated requirements; check the notes for the package you plan to install. Read the Polaris/Vega 25.8.1 release notes.

Laptops and all-in-one PCs
On a laptop or all-in-one, the computer maker may supply a driver tailored to the system’s hardware and features. AMD recommends using the OEM-provided driver when manufacturer-specific features or compatibility are a concern. Check the manufacturer’s support page as well as AMD’s, particularly if an AMD package causes a system-specific problem.
How to check whether an older AMD GPU is still supported
- Identify the exact model. Use the GPU name shown in Windows or the computer maker’s specifications; a family name alone may not distinguish desktop and mobile variants.
- Open AMD’s driver/download page for that model. Confirm that the operating system and the exact GPU appear as compatible with the offered package.
- Read the latest release notes. Look for the supported-product list, the release date, game-specific support or optimizations, and known issues. A package listing establishes compatibility, not guaranteed fixes or ideal performance in every game.
- Check the target game’s notes. Look for the exact Radeon family and any listed problems before attributing a crash or performance issue to the card’s age.
- For a laptop or all-in-one, check the OEM page. Prefer the manufacturer’s package if system-specific features or compatibility are at issue.
How to compare two older AMD cards
Do not compare them by launch age alone. Compare the generation and driver branch, the date and compatibility list of the latest package, what kind of maintenance its notes show, support for the game you care about, operating-system compatibility, and whether the card is in a desktop or an OEM system. AMD’s cited materials do not provide a controlled performance comparison, so they cannot establish which card will run a given game better.
