For dark-room movies, deep blacks and seating spread across the room, OLED is usually the best fit. For a bright living room, a large screen at a lower price, or hours of static content, shortlist QLED and Mini-LED LCD TVs. Ordinary LED TVs cover a broad range of budgets and performance, so the label alone cannot identify the best set. Compare specific models at the same size and in your market.
What do LED, QLED, Mini-LED and OLED mean?
LED: an LCD screen with an LED backlight
Most TVs sold as LED TVs are LCD panels illuminated by LEDs behind the screen. The LCD pixels control how much backlight passes through to form the picture. Panel type and backlight design affect contrast, viewing angles and overall picture quality, so “LED” covers models with very different performance.

QLED: quantum dots added to an LED-backlit LCD
QLED TVs use a quantum-dot layer to improve color in an LED-backlit LCD design. QLED is still an LCD category: unlike OLED, it does not have pixels that produce their own light. The name alone does not tell you how bright a TV gets or how well it controls dark areas.

Mini-LED: a more finely controlled LCD backlight
Mini-LED uses smaller backlight LEDs and, in some models, more local-dimming zones. That can improve contrast by letting the TV dim parts of the screen independently. But the zones are larger than individual pixels, so bright objects or subtitles on a dark background can still produce a halo, often called blooming.

OLED: each pixel makes its own light
OLED pixels emit light individually and can switch off entirely. That pixel-level control produces very deep blacks and avoids the backlight halos associated with local dimming. OLED also responds quickly, which can help motion look clearer.
QD-OLED and WOLED are different OLED designs
RTINGS describes WOLED as using white OLED light with color filters and a white subpixel, while QD-OLED starts with blue OLED light and uses quantum dots to produce red and green. Both are OLED, but their design and handling of ambient light can differ. The general OLED label does not capture every model’s behavior. RTINGS’ panel overview explains the distinctions.

Which screen type suits your room and viewing habits?
| What matters most | Start by considering | What to check on the exact model |
|---|---|---|
| Movies in a dark room | OLED | Black levels in dark scenes; for Mini-LED alternatives, check for blooming around subtitles and bright objects. |
| A bright living room | Bright QLED or Mini-LED LCD; newer OLEDs may also suit the room | Measured brightness and reflection handling, not just the technology label. |
| Seating spread across the room | OLED is generally more consistent off-axis | How contrast and color change from the sides; LCD/QLED results vary by panel and viewing-angle treatment. |
| Gaming | OLED can be attractive for its fast pixel response | Refresh rate, VRR, input behavior and HDMI 2.1 support on the specific model and size. |
| Static graphics left on for long periods | Consider an LCD-based QLED or LED model, or plan OLED use carefully | How often fixed logos, tickers or game HUDs remain on screen, plus the warranty terms. |
| Keeping the purchase price down or choosing among many sizes | Compare LED and QLED models across budgets | Prices and size availability for same-size sets in your region. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. LCD viewing angles, brightness, dimming performance and gaming features vary by model; OLED brightness and reflection handling also vary. For a useful comparison, look for independent measurements where available rather than treating a category name as a performance rating. Samsung’s UK guide outlines the broad technology differences, while What Hi-Fi?’s comparison discusses the trade-offs.

- Set your priorities. Decide whether dark-scene contrast, bright-room visibility, wide seating, gaming, static content, screen size or price matters most.
- Compare the same size in your market. A technology comparison is less useful if the sets differ substantially in size, price or regional configuration.
- Check picture performance. Look for brightness and reflection measurements for your room conditions. For LCD sets with local dimming, pay attention to black-level behavior and halos around bright objects.
- Verify the features you will use. Check refresh rate, VRR, HDMI 2.1 and input behavior on the precise model and size; features may be limited to selected series or markets.
- Review ownership details. Compare current price, smart platform, warranty terms and local availability alongside the picture.
For context, RTINGS compares the 2025 LG G5 OLED with the 2025 Samsung QN90F QLED and notes that performance depends on the particular model and test conditions. It describes Mini-LED QLED as narrowing the contrast gap while still having possible blooming and flicker trade-offs. Those are examples of specific sets, not proof that either technology always wins. See RTINGS’ comparison and testing context.

Regional lineups and specifications also matter. Panasonic’s February 23, 2026 announcement covers its European range, which includes OLED, Mini-LED, QLED, 4K LED and 2K LED models; sizes and features vary by series, model and market. Panasonic lists more than 1,000 local-dimming zones and around 1,500 nits peak brightness for its European W97C/W95C Mini-LED range. Those are manufacturer-published specifications for that range, not general Mini-LED figures or independent measurements. Panasonic’s announcement has the lineup details.
What OLED burn-in means in everyday use
OLED pixels can wear unevenly if the same bright elements remain on screen for prolonged periods. A fixed channel logo, news ticker or game HUD is a more relevant concern than varied viewing. Temporary image retention is different: a faint image can linger briefly and fade after different content is shown. Roku’s guidance recommends varying what you watch, avoiding leaving a still screen paused for hours, and lowering brightness when fixed overlays stay visible for long periods. It addresses Roku OLED TVs; do not assume its interface-specific behavior applies to every brand. Read Roku’s OLED guidance.

So, which TV screen type should you choose?
- Choose OLED as your starting point if you mainly watch films in a dim room, value deep blacks and have seating off to the sides. It can also suit gaming and movies together if the model’s features fit and your viewing habits are not dominated by static graphics.
- Shortlist QLED or Mini-LED LCD if your room is bright, you want a large screen for less, or the TV will display fixed information for long stretches. Check brightness, reflections and local-dimming artifacts on the specific set.
- Compare regular LED TVs on their merits if price or size range is central. “LED” does not specify a single performance level; inspect the particular panel and backlight design.
There is no universal winner. The best choice is the specific TV that performs well for your room, viewing position, content and budget.
