You can order medicines online in India, but the same prescription and pharmacy safeguards apply as when buying in person. Before paying, identify the pharmacy that will dispense the order; for prescription medicines, confirm the service requires a registered medical practitioner’s prescription and that supply is from licensed premises under a registered pharmacist’s supervision. When the order arrives, check the medicine and its packaging against your prescription and keep the invoice.
Before you order: identify the dispensing pharmacy
An online marketplace or app may not be the pharmacy that actually supplies your medicine. Look for the name of the dispensing pharmacy and relevant license details. If the seller does not make these clear, ask customer support which pharmacy will fill the order and what licensing information it can provide. In India, state licensing authorities grant licenses for the sale and distribution of medicines and can take action over violations of license conditions, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s 2025 parliamentary answer.

Yes, an online order does not remove prescription requirements. Under Rule 65(9)(a) of the Drugs Rules, 1945, medicines in Schedules H, H1 and X “shall not be sold by retail except on and in accordance with the prescription of a Registered Medical Practitioner.” See the CDSCO-hosted Drugs Rules. The Ministry has also stated that prescription medicines are to be supplied from licensed premises by, or under the personal supervision of, a registered pharmacist: Ministry response on medicine sales.

Use a current prescription and follow your prescriber’s directions. Do not use a service that invites you to bypass prescription requirements. If the prescription, medicine or proposed substitution is unclear, ask the prescriber or dispensing pharmacy rather than deciding on a substitute or dose yourself.
How to assess an online pharmacy before placing an order
- Check who fills the order. The pharmacy’s identity should be clear, not just the name of the marketplace or app.
- Check the prescription process. For a medicine that requires a prescription, the service should ask for an appropriate prescription and route it for proper handling, not offer a workaround.
- Look for pharmacist access. A way to ask a pharmacist about the prescription or medicine is useful. A 2017 CDSCO-hosted committee report recommended prescription verification and access to clarification in its proposed retail model; that recommendation does not establish that every current service provides those protections. Read the committee report.
- Expect useful order documentation. Keep the invoice and order record. The committee report’s proposed model included pharmacy identity, batch number and expiry on the invoice; treat that as a useful benchmark, not proof of a universal current practice.
Hidden seller identity, prescription medicines offered without an appropriate prescription, or an inability to say which pharmacy dispenses the order are practical warning signs. Do not proceed until you can resolve them.

When the medicine arrives: check it before use
- Match the medicine to the prescription and order. Check the name, strength and form. If anything differs, contact the dispensing pharmacy or prescriber before using it.
- Inspect the package and label. Check the manufacturer, batch number and expiry information. These are among the traceability particulars addressed in the Drugs Rules.
- Keep the invoice and order details. They can help identify the seller and product if you need to ask a question or report a concern.
- Do not use a suspect or expired product. If the label or packaging appears altered, the medicine does not match, or the expiry date has passed, contact the pharmacy and a health professional. Do not guess whether it is safe to use.
Where to check medicine information or report a concern
CDSCO’s consumer information pages link to information on approved retailers and wholesalers, approved drugs and formulations, not-of-standard-quality drugs, recalls and adverse drug reaction reporting. Use the relevant official resource if you need to check medicine information or follow a reporting route for a suspected quality problem.

What India’s e-pharmacy rules mean for shoppers
Be careful with claims that a specific national e-pharmacy registration system or portal is already in force. A 2017 government release summarized committee recommendations for regulating e-pharmacies, including a proposed registration mechanism and national portal: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare release. In its 2025 parliamentary answer, the Ministry said draft rules incorporating e-pharmacy provisions had been published for comments. Those proposals should not be presented as current requirements unless a newer notification or amendment confirms them.
For a buyer, the practical checks remain concrete: identify the pharmacy responsible for dispensing, follow prescription rules, and inspect the medicine and its documentation. Do not assume that a familiar marketplace name alone confirms the pharmacy’s licensing or the order’s quality.
