For movies and scripted shows, start with Filmmaker Mode if your OLED TV has it; otherwise, try Cinema or Movie. For games, switch to Game mode or the maker’s gaming mode. These are starting points, not universal winners: the best-looking option depends on your model, room, source and preferences.
What Filmmaker Mode is meant to do
Filmmaker Mode aims to show films and shows closer to their intended presentation by reducing picture processing. LG says its implementation turns off motion smoothing, image sharpening and other processing while preserving the original aspect ratio, colors and frame rate. Samsung describes the mode as showing content without changes to picture settings. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of intended behavior, not a guarantee that every TV or viewer will produce or prefer the same result.

On a compatible set, select Filmmaker Mode while watching a film or scripted show, then compare it with Cinema or Movie. The labels and implementation can vary by brand and model, and the room, screen reflections, signal and content also affect the image. LG advises adjusting picture settings to suit the viewing environment and personal taste (LG TV picture settings; LG OLED TV Cinema).

A darker appearance does not by itself mean the TV is faulty. Samsung specifically cautions that Filmmaker Mode may look darker than other picture modes. Room lighting and reflections influence how bright the picture seems, so compare movie presets in the conditions where you normally watch. A brighter mode may suit your room or taste, but brightness alone does not make it more accurate.

Some newer LG products advertise ambient-light compensation for Filmmaker Mode, but availability is product- and year-specific. Do not assume your OLED has that feature; check its manual and the settings available on your model. LG’s guidance also notes that lighting, reflectance, settings and content affect the picture (LG USA Support).
Use a gaming mode for games
For console gaming, choose Game mode or the TV’s equivalent gaming setting rather than assuming a movie preset is best. Samsung says Game Mode is intended to optimize speed and warns that graphics quality may decline slightly; Sony describes its Game mode as suitable for games. The exact behavior depends on the TV model and input, so consult the manual for your set (Samsung picture settings; Sony picture settings).

When to consider calibration
You do not need professional calibration just to choose a useful built-in mode. Calibration is an optional route for viewers seeking measured accuracy: LG describes Auto Calibration as expert tuning for display deviations in color and brightness, and Samsung documents Smart Calibration on supported models. Support and setup depend on the TV. Neither feature makes calibration a prerequisite for using Filmmaker, Cinema or Movie mode (LG OLED TV Cinema; Samsung Canada picture settings).
There is no dependable set of numerical picture values that applies to every OLED. Settings and behavior vary by model, input, signal and viewing environment. Use the built-in preset as a baseline and check your TV’s manual for specific controls rather than copying another model’s numbers.
