An old router is not automatically unsafe. Update its software, then check its Wi-Fi security setting: the Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. If your updated router offers only WPA or WEP, consider replacing it. Meanwhile, secure the router’s settings and each connected device; a router alone cannot protect an outdated camera, TV, speaker, or appliance.
Why your router matters to smart devices
Smart-home devices commonly connect to the internet through a home router, making its configuration an important part of their privacy and security. The FTC describes the router as “the key to privacy” in the Internet of Things (IoT) world. That does not mean every older router is compromised or must be replaced; the practical question is whether it can be updated and configured with current recommended protections. Check the router before deciding to replace it
- Find out who manages it. Note the router’s model and check the manufacturer’s update instructions. If your internet provider supplied or manages the router, ask whether it receives automatic software updates and how to confirm the current version.
- Install available updates. Use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions. Update availability and support depend on the specific router and provider, so age alone is not enough to determine whether the unit is secure.
- Inspect Wi-Fi security after updating. In the router’s settings, look for WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. The FTC recommends either. If the updated router still offers only WPA or WEP, the FTC advises considering a new router because those options are outdated and not secure.

Secure the router if you keep it
- Replace default credentials. Set a unique administrator password and a unique Wi-Fi password. Do not reuse passwords from other accounts.
- Choose a privacy-preserving network name. Avoid a network name that reveals your name, address, or other personal information.
- Enable the router firewall. Check the router settings or its instructions to confirm that its firewall is on.
- Consider a guest network. If available, use it to separate visitors or compatible smart devices from your main network. Check device and router instructions, since network separation can affect how devices communicate.
- Turn off unneeded convenience features. Consider disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP when you do not need them. These features can make a network less secure, but turning them off may affect devices or services that rely on them. Check the relevant instructions before changing settings.

Secure every connected device, not just the network
A well-configured router does not automatically fix weak settings or outdated software on the devices connected to it. Make an inventory of smart cameras, speakers, televisions, appliances, and other internet-connected equipment. For each device, check for firmware and app updates, change any default password, and disable or disconnect features and devices you no longer use. Pay particular attention to cameras
For home security cameras, the FTC recommends WPA3 or WPA2, current router software, an enabled router firewall, and a separate network for cameras where available. These measures reduce reliance on the router as the only line of defense. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Security Cameras

What to check when buying a replacement
If your updated router cannot use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, compare replacement options on the protections and compatibility that matter to your home—not on age or a presumed speed requirement.
