Keep your old phone if it still gets security updates, runs the apps you rely on, works with your carrier, and lasts through a normal day. Choose a budget replacement if support has ended, essential apps or everyday tasks no longer work well, or the battery is unreliable and repair is not worthwhile. Age alone does not decide it: the answer depends on the exact model, condition, repair cost, and replacement’s support and warranty.
What matters more: the phone’s age or its condition?
For basic use—calls and messages, browsing, maps, email, messaging apps, and occasional photos—an older phone can remain a sensible choice if it is secure, compatible, responsive enough, and dependable. A newer budget phone is not automatically better: entry-level models differ in software support, performance, storage, cameras, and network compatibility.

Support is a particularly important dividing line. Android update timing and availability vary by manufacturer and model. Google says security updates help protect against new threats and keep personal data secure, and notes that outdated software can increase security risks and app-compatibility problems. Check the exact device rather than assuming that all old phones—or all budget phones—have the same support life: Android: Why Android Updates Matter.
For an iPhone, check the model’s current software and security status as well as its battery condition. Apple’s Battery Health and service guidance explains how to assess supported models and notes that service options depend on location and model: Apple: iPhone battery and performance.

Compare the two options against your own daily needs
Before deciding, write down the apps and tasks you cannot do without. Then compare the specific old phone and the specific replacement against the same checks.
| What to check | Keep the old phone when… | A budget replacement makes more sense when… |
|---|---|---|
| Security and software support | It still receives relevant updates and meets the security needs of your use. | Support has ended, or the device cannot run a required app or software version. |
| Apps and network | Your essential apps work and the phone is compatible with your carrier and network. | A must-have app or carrier/network requirement rules it out. |
| Battery | It lasts long enough for your routine, or a suitable repair is affordable. | It cannot reliably get through your day and repair is impractical or poor value. |
| Everyday performance | Your usual apps, web pages, maps, camera, and messages open and respond acceptably. | Slowdowns interfere with tasks you regularly need to complete. |
| Storage, screen, and camera | There is enough usable space and the screen and camera meet your needs. | Those limits affect your everyday use and a replacement offers a meaningful improvement. |
| Cost and protection | Keeping or repairing it costs less over the period you expect to use it. | The replacement’s price, warranty, and likely useful life make it better value overall. |
These are checks, not a model ranking: without two named devices and a location, there is no reliable way to establish a winner or compare current prices.
Check whether the battery is the real problem
A weak battery can make an otherwise capable phone feel obsolete. GSMA’s 2025 global consumer survey report says 33% of respondents cited poor battery life as a reason for replacing their previous phone; 27% cited poor performance or slowing down, and 19% cited physical damage. These are survey responses, not a prediction about any one phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the old phone otherwise meets your needs, compare its day-to-day endurance with the cost and availability of a model-compatible battery service. For iPhones, Apple’s guidance covers battery health and service options. Apple also warns that nongenuine batteries may raise capacity, performance, verification, or safety concerns, so do not assume a generic replacement battery is compatible or safe.

Calculate the cost over the time you expect to use the phone
Compare more than the replacement’s sticker price. Include any repair, required accessories, warranty, and the possibility that either phone will need replacing sooner than you expect. A cheap handset that lacks the support, network fit, or app compatibility you need may not be good value; equally, replacing a supported phone solely because it is old may waste money.
GSMA’s 2025 global consumer survey report found that around 90% of consumers rated durability, guaranteed software and security updates for at least seven years, and easy, low-cost repair as important factors in their next phone purchase. That figure describes reported priorities; it does not establish the support period for any particular device.

Refurbished phones are another possible way to replace an unsuitable device, but assess the exact seller’s condition description, warranty, and return terms. In the same GSMA report, 49% of refurbished-phone consumers rated the device breaking sooner than a new phone as a very important concern. The report also found that nearly half of surveyed consumers considered cost savings a very important benefit, and 40% said savings let them buy a higher-end model than new. Survey preferences do not guarantee an individual refurbished phone’s condition or value.

- Find the exact model name and check its current operating-system and security-update status with the manufacturer.
- Confirm that every essential app works on it and that it supports your carrier and network requirements.
- Assess battery health or normal-day endurance. If considering service, get a model-specific quote and verify part compatibility.
- Try your everyday tasks—or, if you cannot test the phone, check its condition and specifications carefully. Look at app responsiveness, browsing, maps, camera use, messages, and available storage.
- Compare the total cost of keeping, repairing, or replacing it, including warranty and how long you expect to use the option.
GSMA’s 2025 report also says 64% of respondents globally had needed a repair for their current or previous phone; among those who needed repairs, half needed a broken-screen repair and one-third needed a battery replacement. That experience is a reason to consider repairability and service availability, not evidence that repairing your particular phone will be economical.
