There is no single disposal route that applies everywhere.
Decide what is worth keeping
Set aside films, performances, family recordings, out-of-print releases, and special editions you expect to watch or value again. For discs you keep, original cases preserve their artwork and presentation. A binder can consolidate a smaller collection, but moving discs out of their cases may separate them from that packaging.

Pass on working DVDs before disposing of them
If a disc plays and is complete, consider whether someone else wants it. You can offer it to friends or neighbors, list it for sale, or ask a charity shop or secondhand-media store whether it accepts DVDs. Suffolk Recycling also lists online reuse networks and car-boot or jumble sales; Calgary recommends giving working media away, listing it online, and checking with charities. Acceptance and demand vary. Selling is an option, not a promise that a particular title will find a buyer or earn money. Contact a recipient first rather than assuming a charity or store will take a drop-off.
Check local rules for discs and cases
DVDs are not universally accepted in household recycling, and cases may follow different rules from discs. The examples below show how guidance varies; they are not a substitute for your own local authority’s instructions.

Other areas have designated collection routes. Recycle Now says some out-of-home points accept DVDs and CDs and advises checking with the local authority; West Sussex directs residents to its recycling center; and the Recycling Council of British Columbia describes Return-It depots for storage media within that provincial program. Consult Recycle Now, West Sussex County Council, or RCBC’s storage-media FAQ for those examples.

Handle personal data separately
A commercial movie disc is different from a DVD or other optical disc holding home movies or personal files. For data-bearing discs, follow the relevant local privacy and disposal guidance. The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment advises, in its Swiss guidance, that “the metal coating on the upper side of the disc must be rubbed off” to make disposed-of data unreadable. The German Environment Agency says CDs and DVDs consist predominantly of polycarbonate and, under its Germany-specific guidance, recommends take-back systems or the recyclable-material collection route. It notes that recovered polycarbonate can be used in applications including medical technology, automotive, and computer industries. This describes German collection guidance; it does not mean every municipality accepts discs. Read the German Environment Agency’s guidance.
