Why Sayin is the benchmark
Ohio State’s August 22, 2026 captain announcement calls Sayin the returning starter and says he is set to lead the offense for a second consecutive season. The team release describes his 2025 season, when he completed 77.0% of his passes for 3,610 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions, with a 177.5 passing-efficiency rating that ranked second nationally. It also says he won his first 12 games as Ohio State’s starter. These are 2025 results, not 2026 season-to-date numbers.

Ohio State also identifies Sayin as a 2025 Heisman finalist. Those established credentials make him the point of comparison; they do not, by themselves, tell readers how the other quarterbacks would perform in a start.

What the backup order does—and does not—show
Ourlads’ chart places St. Clair second, Fahey third and Martin fourth. That is the current published order in the sources available here, but it should not be mistaken for a detailed official evaluation of each player or proof of how Ohio State would handle every game situation.
A February 17, 2026 Eleven Warriors article labeled its list a preseason projection. It put Sayin first, St. Clair second and Martin third, while describing Martin as an experienced transfer from Maryland and Fahey as competition for the third spot. The October chart instead places Fahey ahead of Martin. The distinction matters: the February list was a forecast, while the later Ourlads chart reflects a later ordering.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the options responsibly
- Use the date and source with the order. Say that Ourlads’ October 3 chart lists Sayin, St. Clair, Fahey and Martin in that sequence.
- Separate the starter from the backup race. Ohio State explicitly identifies Sayin as the returning starter and captain. The reviewed sources do not offer an equivalent official evaluation of the other three.
- Treat class as roster context, not a performance grade. The university’s roster lists the four players as junior, sophomore, freshman and senior respectively; class alone does not establish readiness or ability.
- Do not compare unsupported current statistics. The sources do not provide comparable 2026 season statistics for all four quarterbacks. Sayin’s cited numbers are from 2025, so they cannot establish how the others compare this season.
For a live roster question, check the dated chart rather than carrying forward a preseason projection. For player performance, look for comparable current-season statistics or a direct coach assessment; neither is established for the full group by the sources cited here.
