For a headset-wide problem, update your Meta Quest, then try a hard reboot before considering a factory reset. If only one app is misbehaving, uninstalling and reinstalling it may be worth trying—but check the app’s save behavior and Cloud Backup first. A factory reset is the last resort: it is irreversible and removes account information and downloaded content from the headset.
Choose by the scope of the problem
| Action | Scope | Data risk | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard reboot | The headset | Meta’s instructions do not attach the factory-reset erase warning to a reboot. | First troubleshooting step for a headset-wide problem after checking for a software update. |
| Uninstall and reinstall | One app | Uninstalling removes local app data. Recovery depends on a usable cloud backup and the app’s save behavior. | A conditional step when one app alone is malfunctioning, after checking its data and backup. |
| Factory reset | The whole headset | Irreversible; removes account information and downloaded games and content from the headset. | Last resort for a persistent device problem after an update and hard reboot. |
Meta’s recommended escalation for device issues is to use its software update tool, try a hard reboot, and only then consider a factory reset. Meta does not identify uninstalling an app as a universal fix for a particular symptom; reserve that option for a problem isolated to one app.

For a headset-wide issue, update and hard reboot first
Check for and install an available software update before resetting. If the device problem remains, Meta’s factory-reset guidance recommends a hard reboot: hold the headset’s power button for 30 seconds, until it turns back on. This is a step to try, not a guarantee that every fault will be fixed.
For one malfunctioning app, check its saves before reinstalling
If the headset works normally but one app does not, uninstalling and reinstalling that app is a narrower step than resetting the whole headset. First check the app’s own save behavior and whether a recent Cloud Backup exists. Meta warns that local data may be lost during uninstall.

What Cloud Backup does—and does not—promise
Meta says Cloud Backup can save and restore eligible app data, but it does not guarantee that every game save or app setting is covered. Users can opt out, developers can exclude data, and data stored in unsupported locations may not be backed up. Confirm that a backup exists and is recent before relying on it.
Cloud Backup requires Meta Horizon OS v35 or later. Meta says backups are made automatically once per night when the headset is idle, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi; when a store app is uninstalled; and when an app exits, up to once every six hours. You can also request one in the Cloud Backup panel in device settings. Meta’s Cloud Backup documentation says the latest backup is restored automatically when an app is installed, and users can choose or manually restore a backup through the Cloud Backups page.

Uninstalling removes the app’s local data but does not delete its Cloud Backups. That distinction does not mean a backup is guaranteed to exist or contain the data you need.

Before a factory reset, understand what will be erased
Meta calls a factory reset “a last resort method for solving device issues.” It is irreversible and removes account information, downloaded games, and other content from the headset. Meta says it does not remove content purchased or downloaded from the account, but you will need to restore local setup and downloads afterward. Have at least 50% battery before resetting, as Meta’s Help Center specifies.

Check Cloud Backup before erasing if you want to preserve eligible app data. Verify the backup in device settings or on the Cloud Backups page, and request an ad-hoc backup when appropriate. Backup coverage depends on settings, eligibility, supported storage, and app behavior; do not assume every save will return.
