October 2026 brings two meteor-shower peaks, Saturn at opposition, a Jupiter-Moon occultation, and a close Moon-Pleiades pairing. The Draconids peak on October 8–9; the Orionids peak on October 21–22. What you can see—and when—depends on your location, local horizon and, for the Orionids, moonset.

October 2026 skywatching calendar

Date What to look for Viewing notes
October 4 Saturn at opposition NASA says Saturn rises around sunset and remains visible for much of the night. NASA’s October skywatching guide
October 6 Jupiter occulted by the Moon Visible across much of North America before dawn; exact timing varies with location. NASA’s October event guide
October 8–9 Draconid meteor shower peak Peak begins around 9 p.m. EDT on October 8 and continues into October 9. Expect a modest few meteors per hour, not a guaranteed count. NASA’s event guide
October 21–22 Orionid meteor shower peak Try the hours before dawn after the Moon sets; moonlight can hide fainter meteors. NASA’s October skywatching guide
October 27–28 Moon near the Pleiades Look east in the evening as the Moon and star cluster rise. The Pleiades can be seen without equipment. NASA’s October skywatching guide

When to watch October’s meteor showers

Draconids: October 8–9

NASA places the Draconid peak on Thursday evening, October 8, into Friday morning, October 9, beginning around 9 p.m. EDT. The radiant—the point from which the meteors appear to originate—is in Draco, but look across the wider sky rather than fixing your gaze on that constellation. NASA describes this as a modest shower, with a few meteors per hour. A nearly new Moon means little moonlight interference near the peak, but the rate is not assured for any one observer. Orionids: October 21–22

The Orionids are debris shed by comet 1P/Halley. NASA lists the shower’s active period as October 2 through November 7, with its peak night on October 21–22. Under dark skies, the NASA shower page gives an estimated 10–20 meteors per hour; NASA’s October 5 event article estimates about 3–6 per hour in suburban areas with ambient light. These are estimates for different observing conditions, not a promised count. The meteors travel at about 41 miles (66 kilometers) per second, according to NASA’s shower reference, which attributes the fast facts to the American Meteor Society and NASA Meteoroid Environment Office. A bright waxing gibbous Moon will wash out some fainter Orionids. Plan around your local moonset and dawn: NASA recommends trying before dawn after the Moon has set. Both hemispheres can watch after midnight from a dark location. The Orionid radiant helps identify the shower, but meteors can cross any part of the sky, so take in as much sky as possible. How to watch meteors

  • Choose a dark location and give your eyes time to adapt. NASA presenter Raquel Villanueva’s advice is: “Give your eyes time to adjust and look up.” NASA’s October guide
  • Use your unaided eyes. Binoculars and telescopes are unnecessary for meteor watching; their narrow field of view makes them a poor fit for scanning a broad sky.
  • Dress for a long, still wait and recline if practical. Check cloud cover and your local horizon before heading out.

Planet and Moon events

Saturn at opposition on October 4

At opposition, Saturn is opposite the Sun in Earth’s sky. NASA says it rises around sunset and stays visible much of the night, making this a convenient month to look for it. The exact direction and visibility at a particular time depend on your location and horizon. NASA’s October skywatching guide

Jupiter and the Moon on October 6

The Moon passes in front of Jupiter in a lunar occultation before dawn. NASA says the event can be seen across much of North America, but the disappearance and reappearance times vary by location. Check a location-specific sky chart or astronomy application for your town before setting an alarm. The event is visible to the unaided eye; binoculars may also reveal Jupiter’s moons. Moon near the Pleiades on October 27–28

Look east in the evening as the Moon and the Pleiades rise. NASA describes the cluster as a fuzzy group of six or seven stars visible without optical aid. Binoculars or a telescope reveal more of the cluster; binoculars can also frame the Moon and Pleiades together. NASA’s October skywatching guide · Space.com’s October planet and sky guide

Which planets can you see in October?

A monthly planet guide describes Mercury low in the west-southwest after sunset during the first 20 days of October, Venus low in bright twilight before it is lost for several weeks around its October 24 inferior conjunction, Mars in the morning sky, Jupiter before sunrise, and Saturn through much of the night. Those are broad observing descriptions, not a promise of visibility from every latitude or local horizon. Space.com’s October planet guide

Neptune is described as near Saturn on October 23, but binoculars or a telescope are needed to see it. A complete Uranus viewing schedule is not established here, so October’s highlights do not support a claim that all eight planets will be easy to see—or visible together. For a local observing plan, use a sky chart set to your location and date, and check the target’s direction, altitude, twilight and rise or set time. Space.com’s October planet guide

What equipment do you need?

You do not need binoculars or a telescope for either meteor shower, Saturn, or the Jupiter occultation. Binoculars are optional for the Pleiades and Jupiter’s moons; a telescope can show more detail in the cluster and is another way to see Neptune. Prioritize a dark viewing spot and a clear, unobstructed horizon over buying equipment for a one-night event.
