For a controller made specifically for Nintendo Switch 2, choose the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. It adds a GameChat button, two remappable rear buttons and a 3.5 mm headset jack. If you already own the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo says it can pair with Switch 2—so weigh those additions against the cost of buying another controller.

Start with compatibility

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is designed for Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch, according to Nintendo’s product information and its support FAQ. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair with Switch 2, making it a practical option if you already have one. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish that the original controller has the newer model’s added controls or headset jack; those are features listed for the Switch 2 Pro Controller.

What the Switch 2 Pro Controller adds

C button for GameChat

The C button opens the GameChat menu. Using GameChat requires internet access, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership on Nintendo’s US accessory page; service availability varies by country. Check Nintendo’s regional product and service information before relying on the feature.

Two remappable rear buttons

The GL and GR buttons on the back can be mapped to buttons of your choice. They may be useful if you want selected controls within easier reach, but Nintendo’s specifications do not establish a performance advantage for particular games.

3.5 mm headset jack

The controller includes a 4-pole stereo 3.5 mm jack using the CTIA standard, according to Nintendo’s regional specifications. Nintendo cautions that it cannot guarantee function with every product, so verify that your specific headset works before choosing the controller for this connection.

Other listed features

Nintendo lists HD rumble 2, motion controls, a capture button and built-in amiibo functionality. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.

Choose a connection and charging setup

If you want to play wired, the cable depends on how you use the console. Nintendo’s instructions for wired tabletop play describe a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, sold separately. For docked TV mode, Nintendo names a USB-C-to-USB-A cable, model BEE-011. The product listing says a USB-C charging cable is included; check the listing for your region and package before buying an extra cable. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories and connection guidance.
