Vendoring the OCR models puts their distribution inside the application’s release boundary: the models can ship with the app instead of requiring a separate first-use fetch. A CDN can keep model weights out of the shipped package and still use pinned versions and integrity checks, but users need network access until the required files are cached. The 76 MB figure is the project’s reported model payload; the sources available here do not independently verify it or show that vendoring makes this deployment faster or more reliable.
What vendoring changes
Vendoring means including model files in the application’s own release and distribution process. Loading them from a CDN means the application obtains those files from a remote host when needed. This is a delivery decision, separate from where OCR runs: a browser can process images locally while still downloading its code and models.

The tradeoff is not simply “large download versus small download.” It is also about when the download happens, which release controls the model, what happens without a network connection, and how the application verifies the bytes it receives.

Vendored files versus runtime CDN delivery
| Question | Vendored models | Models fetched at runtime |
|---|---|---|
| First use | Models can arrive as part of the application release, avoiding a separate first-use request to a model host. | An uncached model must be fetched from its host before it can be used. |
| Application package | Model files are part of the application’s distribution. The project reports a 76 MB model payload, but that total is not independently verified here. | Weights can stay outside the shipped package. EdgeParse, for example, publishes a pinned manifest while fetching model artifacts when needed: EdgeParse’s OCR model documentation. |
| Offline use | Bundled models are available offline if they were delivered with the app and remain locally available. | Offline use requires the needed models to have been downloaded and retained in browser storage. EdgeParse documents an offline error for a missing uncached model; BrowserOCR says storage clearing or eviction can remove cached assets: BrowserOCR’s explanation of offline use. |
| Version and integrity control | The application’s build and release process can control which model files ship. A release still needs a deliberate versioning and verification policy. | A pinned manifest can specify model versions, byte lengths, and expected SHA-256 hashes. Hosting weights remotely does not, by itself, prevent controlled and verifiable delivery: EdgeParse’s manifest and integrity-check details. |
| Operational responsibility | The application release process owns distribution of model assets. | The team also operates or depends on the model host, its cache policy, and its availability. This is a consequence of the delivery architecture, not a measured reliability result. |
Why keep models with the application?
One release controls the app and its models
Vendoring makes the model payload part of the application’s release rather than a separate runtime dependency. That can simplify coordination: a release can specify which application code and model files belong together, and rolling back the release can restore that combination. It does not guarantee identical OCR behavior unless the relevant model versions are actually pinned and maintained.

Avoid a separate uncached first-use fetch
If the models arrive with the application, an uncached user does not need to contact a separate model host before those files are available. That is a reduction in one network dependency, not evidence that the overall app starts faster: the download may still be large, and no project-specific transfer or startup measurements are available.
Make the distribution boundary explicit
With vendoring, the application’s build and release pipeline is responsible for delivering the model assets. With runtime delivery, the application depends on a host and its caching behavior as well. Which boundary is easier to manage depends on the project’s packaging, release process, and hosting arrangements.

Why a CDN can still be a sound choice
Runtime delivery can keep multi-megabyte weights out of the application package and fetch them only when needed. It need not mean using unpinned or unchecked files. EdgeParse documents a package that includes a pinned models.json manifest with SHA-256 metadata while downloading the weight blobs at runtime; a custom manifest can point to a chosen CDN while retaining expected hashes and byte lengths: EdgeParse OCR model delivery.
PaddleOCR also documents browser deployment in which model assets are supplied by URL and ONNX Runtime Web’s WASM assets can point to jsDelivr. That demonstrates configurable remote hosting, not a performance comparison with bundling: PaddleOCR browser deployment.

Do OCR models need to download every time?
Not necessarily. Browser applications can store downloaded models in browser-managed storage. EdgeParse describes using OPFS where preferred or the Cache API, while BrowserOCR says offline operation depends on required page and model assets having been cached. A cache is not the same as a permanent installation: browser storage may be cleared or evicted, so an application that needs dependable offline use should handle missing files and provide a way to fetch them again.
For a remote model, first use without a valid cached copy requires network access to the host. If the user is offline at that point, EdgeParse documents an OFFLINE error and degraded parsing. The exact behavior depends on the application; a CDN architecture alone does not specify how it handles failure.

Does local OCR mean nothing is sent over the network?
No. Local OCR describes where the recognition computation happens, not everything the browser downloads or transmits. BrowserOCR says its browser downloads the page, JavaScript, dictionary, ONNX models, and WASM runtime. Its inspected network behavior also included anonymous task-event requests. Those details illustrate why network claims should name the specific data and requests involved rather than promise that nothing ever leaves the device: BrowserOCR’s network and privacy explanation.
How model versioning and integrity checks fit in
Pin the model version, regardless of host
A model can change OCR output when upgraded, so hosting choice does not remove the need for version control. Google Cloud’s Enterprise Document OCR documentation says: “If strict consistency is required, use a frozen model version to pin behavior to a legacy OCR model for up to 18 months.” That is Google Cloud’s documented option, not a universal pinning period or a statement about this project: Google Cloud Enterprise Document OCR versioning.

Check the bytes, not just the URL
A remote URL identifies where a file is requested; it does not prove that the received file is the expected one. A manifest can specify an expected byte length and SHA-256 hash, then the application can reject a response that fails those checks. EdgeParse documents this approach for its model manifest. The same principle applies to vendored assets: verify which files enter the release rather than assuming that including them guarantees the right version.
What the 76 MB figure does—and does not—tell you
The title’s 76 MB is the project’s reported model payload. The available sources do not independently confirm that total, clarify whether it represents compressed or uncompressed files, or provide project-specific measurements for transfer time, cache hit rate, availability, or OCR runtime. It therefore supports describing the size of the reported payload, not claiming a measured improvement in speed, uptime, cost, or privacy.
The documented examples establish that runtime CDN delivery can combine a pinned manifest, caching, and integrity checks, while also creating a network requirement for uncached models. They do not establish that either delivery approach is faster or more reliable for this project.
