This Metal Gear Solid 4 boss guide covers all seven major encounters, from Laughing Octopus to Liquid Ocelot, with practical tactics for each fight and nonlethal options where they matter. Spoilers for story progression and boss mechanics follow.
Before the boss fights
Choose a difficulty that gives you room to learn the mechanics, keep both lethal and nonlethal weapons available, and avoid spending all your heavy ammunition before a fight. Konami lists Liquid Easy, Naked Normal, Solid Normal, Big Boss Hard, and The Boss Extreme in its Master Collection online manual; Solid Normal is the standard setting, while The Boss Extreme unlocks after one completion. The manual also recommends practicing controls and firing in the Virtual Range.

Act 2: Laughing Octopus
Find her through the camouflage
Equip the Solid Eye with night vision, the Mk.2 tranquilizer, and a dependable rifle such as the M4 Custom. Octopus disguises herself among props and bodies in the interconnected research station. Sweep the rooms with night vision and treat suspicious objects as potential disguises. If she rolls toward Snake, climb onto furniture or move clear of her path. When the area is safe, collect ammunition and rations.

Choose how to finish the Beauty phase
Once her armored Beast phase ends, switch to the Mk.2 and drain her stamina for the nonlethal outcome. The walkthrough associates mercy with the OctoCamo facemask. Using lethal weapons in this exposed Beauty phase does not follow the nonlethal strategy.
Act 3: Raging Raven
Manage the drones, then target Raven
Carry a rifle or SMG to clear the drones, and save a heavy weapon such as the Javelin or RPG-7 for Raven. Keep moving between the tower’s ground floor and balconies to reduce the chance of being caught by her missiles. Clear drones until Raven closes in, then use the heavy weapon while she is exposed. The walkthrough recommends the Javelin at longer range and the faster-reloading RPG-7 when she is nearby; take additional shots if the opening lasts.
Use the Mk.2 for the nonlethal reward
After the Beast shell falls, switch to the Mk.2 for the Beauty phase. The walkthrough associates the mercy outcome with the MGL-140 and a Raging Beauty facemask. Konami’s character archive describes Raven’s flight and use of UCAVs, fitting the fight’s emphasis on airspace and drone pressure.

Act 4: Crying Wolf
Locate her in the snowfield
Bring a sniper rifle, the Solid Eye with night vision, and the Mk.2. Learn the snowfield’s landmarks and remove nearby Haven Troopers where practical. Wolf can track Snake when he is downwind. The walkthrough says her perspective can briefly reveal her position, so use the landscape to work out where she is before she fires.
A tower and full OctoCamo offer a patient vantage point. Sweep the distant tree line and watch for the Solid Eye marker as your crosshair passes over her. Keep an eye on the Solid Eye battery, and fire when Wolf emerges from her armor.
Choose a patient or aggressive approach
The tower-and-sniper approach trades time for fewer close encounters. For more aggressive damage, the walkthrough suggests the MGL-140: knock Wolf down, land several shots, retreat to reload, and repeat. Keep enough recovery items for the exposure involved. During the Beauty phase, use the Mk.2 for the nonlethal outcome; the walkthrough identifies the Rail Gun as the reward. Konami’s archive confirms Wolf’s armor and high-powered railgun.

Act 4: Vamp
Stop the healing
Ordinary damage only incapacitates Vamp temporarily. Shoot until he is down, move behind him, restrain him with CQC, and inject the nanomachine syringe to stop his healing.

Defend against the Gekkos
The encounter shifts to a Gekko defense while Otacon starts REX. Use the Rail Gun to thin the self-destructing Gekkos. The walkthrough recommends sheltering under REX and aiming near the top of their heads.
Act 4: Metal Gear RAY
Use REX’s weapons to create an opening
Snake pilots REX against Liquid’s RAY. REX has guided missiles, a Gatling gun, a chemical laser, and a leg sweep. At range, charge the chemical laser for a direct hit, or use missiles when you have time to lock on. When RAY is weakened and an opening appears, dash in for the leg sweep and follow the special-action prompt.

After the attack, retreat behind buildings and repeat. Do not let RAY close the distance: sidestep or retreat when it charges. Exact button inputs can vary by version, so follow the on-screen prompt for your release.

Break her control and protect Meryl
Keep the nanomachine syringe and Mk.2 tranquilizer ready. When Mantis disrupts Snake’s aim, use the syringe on Snake to break her control. Tranquilize Meryl so she cannot endanger herself or Snake.
Turn the puppet against Mantis
Shoot the strings attached to one of the puppets. When the doll falls, retrieve it and use it against Mantis; the walkthrough says this gives Snake control over her and ends the Beast phase.

The black screen showing the “Hideo 2” channel text is an intentional effect described in the walkthrough, not a system crash. Do not interrupt the game in response to that specific fake-out.
Act 5: Liquid Ocelot
This is a close-range stamina duel, not a conventional gunfight. Circle to manage spacing, attack when an opening appears, and follow special-move prompts to deal substantial damage. Stay away from the deck’s edge. Learn the rhythm of Liquid Ocelot’s attacks to find openings; the walkthrough gives this broad approach rather than frame-specific timing.
