Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Obsidian reports a YAML front matter parsing error, the problem is usually in the metadata block at the top of the note—not in the Markdown body. Terry Zhao describes a browser-based validator and fixer that checks that block, points to a problematic line, and offers a small set of repairs. Its no-upload behavior is the author’s claim, not an independently verified guarantee, so review the edits and protect the original note before using it.
What YAML front matter does in Obsidian
Obsidian stores note properties as YAML at the beginning of a Markdown file. A block typically starts and ends with a line containing three hyphens; the lines between them hold values such as a status, date, or tags. For example:

---
status: draft
tags:
- project
---
Note content begins here.Obsidian’s Properties documentation says property names must be unique within a note. It supports text, number, checkbox, date, date-time, and list property types. You can add properties through the Add file property command, the Cmd/Ctrl+; shortcut, the More actions menu, or by typing --- at the start of a file. The same documentation lists nested properties and bulk editing as unsupported native features.

A parsing error can make a note’s metadata unavailable or behave unexpectedly, even when the body text appears intact. The cause may be a malformed or incomplete metadata block, or a value whose interpretation is not what you intended. Terry Zhao’s article highlights tabs used for indentation, a missing closing ---, and values such as yes, no, and 007 as examples of trouble or surprise. These are examples from the author, not a complete catalog of YAML rules or a guarantee that every parser treats them identically.
#1 Best Overall
- Crisp writing pages provide plenty of space for personal reflections, sketching, or for recording favorite quotations or poems.
- Premium 120 gsm paper takes pen or pencil beautifully.
- Paper is acid-free and of archival quality.
- Light gray lines subtly guide your writing.
- A ribbon bookmark keeps your place.
Before changing anything, locate the first front matter delimiter at the top of the file and check that a closing delimiter appears before the note body. Then inspect indentation, spelling, and whether property names are duplicated. A corrected block should preserve the values you meant to store, not merely satisfy a parser.
What the featured fixer says it can do
In his DEV Community article, Terry Zhao describes a browser-based YAML Frontmatter Validator & Fixer. He says it checks only the front matter block, reports the line associated with a detected problem, and can suggest or make limited adjustments:

- Quote selected values, including examples such as
yes,no, and007. - Show changes line by line for review.
That scope matters: the author describes a front matter check, not validation of the entire Markdown note, plugin behavior, or every YAML feature. The article does not establish compatibility with every YAML parser or Obsidian plugin.

How to use an automated repair cautiously
- Keep a recoverable original. Copy the current front matter block or duplicate the note before applying a change. This gives you a way back if a proposed repair alters an intended value.
- Check the exact note text. If you paste content into a browser tool, consider whether that note contains private or sensitive information. Zhao says the fixer processes pasted text in the browser without uploading it, but that privacy statement is the author’s claim; it was not independently verified.
- Review the line-level diagnosis. Compare the flagged line with the note’s actual property names, indentation, delimiters, and intended values. A tool’s proposed fix is not proof that it reflects your intent.
- Inspect every change before replacing the block. In particular, check any added delimiter and any value that has been quoted or trimmed. Confirm that the corrected YAML still expresses the metadata you want.
- Test in Obsidian. Apply the reviewed block and confirm that the properties display as expected and the note body remains in place. If the error persists, undo or restore the original and troubleshoot the specific parser or plugin involved.
When Obsidian’s built-in property editing is enough
For straightforward metadata, Obsidian’s native property controls let you add and edit supported property types without using a separate validator. The official documentation describes both the available ways to add properties and the current limitations: nested properties and bulk editing are not supported natively. A separate front matter fixer may be useful when an existing block is malformed and you want a line-level clue, but it should not replace checking the note’s intended values or the behavior of the plugins you use.
