If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube, first identify which failure you have: OBS is dropping frames or losing its connection, YouTube will not accept the encoder, or OBS still says it is connected while YouTube reports an unhealthy or ended stream. Each points to a different fix; a reconnect setting alone cannot solve all three.
Start with the OBS connection indicators and YouTube Studio’s stream-health message, then follow the matching steps below. The exact cause depends on your network, stream key, event settings and YouTube’s displayed error.

1. Find out where the connection is failing
Check OBS first
Look at OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame counter while the problem is happening. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Intermittent disconnections and dropped frames commonly point to the network route between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server. See the OBS network troubleshooting guide.

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the intended stream and read its stream-status or health message. YouTube provides specific error messages and instructions there. Use that message to choose the relevant branch below instead of changing unrelated encoder settings. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance.

2. If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting
Reduce bitrate to fit your stable upload

Check the upload connection while the stream is running, not just the speed advertised by your ISP. Upload capacity can vary over time.

In OBS, open Settings > Output and lower the video bitrate. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic; it is not a guarantee, especially if other devices or applications are using the connection.

Check the resulting bitrate against YouTube’s encoder recommendations for your codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 examples include 6 Mbps for 720p60, 8 Mbps for 720p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain them. Confirm the current full table in YouTube’s encoder settings help.

Lowering bitrate can stabilize delivery but may reduce picture quality. If the line cannot reliably sustain the chosen settings, select a lower resolution or frame rate as well.

Test another network path or ingest server

If OBS offers another ingest server, test it and compare the connection behavior.

Keep OBS’s network binding set to Default unless you have a specific reason to bind to an interface.

On Windows, test OBS’s Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options if available. Treat IPv4-only as an experiment; if it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.

Dynamic bitrate can reduce video bitrate when network conditions worsen, but it may lower quality and does not fix the underlying connection.

Isolate local and ISP causes

If you use a VPN, test briefly without it. Restore it afterward if it was not the cause.

Check whether firewall or security software, or a network-optimizer utility, is interfering with OBS. Do not leave protection disabled: if the test identifies interference, restore protection and make a narrow exception for OBS.

Update network drivers from the computer, network-adapter or motherboard manufacturer.

If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. Restart the modem or router if other connectivity is also failing.

Replace or escalate hardware only after isolating the fault. OBS lists cables, network cards, routers, switches and extenders as possible fault points. If local checks do not resolve the route or connectivity problem, contact your ISP.
3. If YouTube will not accept OBS
Confirm the server URL and stream key
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key. The key acts like a password for sending video to the selected live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify the intended stream and copy its current server URL and key into the corresponding OBS stream settings. Do not share the key in screenshots, public logs or support posts.
If the key was reset, an owner or manager must copy the new key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube also advises refreshing the key in third-party encoder software when it reports an encoder error. If software signs in to YouTube without asking for a key, YouTube directs users to that software’s support. See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder setup instructions and its troubleshooting guidance.

Make sure the correct event is selected
A valid key for a different stream or event will not necessarily start the broadcast you intend. Check the selected YouTube event, key and server URL together before going live. If you reuse event settings, check the copied controls rather than assuming they match your current workflow.

4. If OBS is connected but YouTube says the stream is unhealthy or ended
Use the exact Live Control Room message
Read the error or health message in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and follow its specific instruction. OBS can report that it is connected while YouTube flags an issue with the incoming stream. Check that OBS is sending to the intended event and that its video and audio output match the settings YouTube expects. YouTube’s stream-health screen is the first place to distinguish an encoder connection from a healthy, playable stream.
Check event auto-start and auto-stop
In the selected YouTube event’s settings, inspect Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube documents these as event controls that let the encoder start or stop a stream when enabled. Reused settings can carry those choices forward. They do not restore a failed internet connection or guarantee OBS will reconnect after a computer or network failure.
5. Make a 24/7 playlist more resilient
Test failover rather than assuming it works
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to a backup encoder. If you have no configured backup, this test will not create one; it verifies an existing setup. YouTube also recommends monitoring audio and video continuously and checking that a local archive file is growing when you are recording one. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup instructions also say that stopping the encoder’s content ends a live stream. The cited guidance does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. If you need a particular archive workflow for a continuous broadcast, check YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance and plan local recording or other capture accordingly. Check copyright and reused-content obligations
A stable connection does not grant permission to use music or video in a playlist. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules, including its reused-content policy if monetization matters. A stream can be technically healthy and still face a rights claim, restriction or other platform action. Use the copyright safety checklist as a pre-stream check; it does not replace YouTube’s rules or rights-holder permission.
