If your OBS stream appears capped at 30 fps, first check Settings > Video > Common FPS Value, then confirm that the source and computer can sustain the selected rate. Finally, verify the incoming frame rate in YouTube Live Control Room. A viewer’s playback menu showing 30 fps alone does not prove OBS sent a 30-fps stream: YouTube transcodes live video into multiple playback formats.
1. Check OBS’s output frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and inspect Common FPS Value. Set it deliberately to the rate you want; OBS says this value should match the desired output FPS, such as 30 or 60, in its OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Also check Output (Scaled) Resolution. Your canvas resolution and the scaled output resolution can differ; the scaled output is what the stream sends. If you want a 60-fps stream, set Common FPS Value to 60, check the output resolution, and test the result rather than assuming a game or source setting controls OBS’s output.
2. Confirm the source and capture chain can supply that rate
Check the actual input path: camera, capture source, game-capture path, or other video source. Look for a setting or limit that holds the input at 30 fps, and compare what the source supplies with OBS’s selected output rate. A 60-fps OBS output setting cannot create motion detail that the source does not provide.

Which device or capture path is limiting a particular stream depends on its model, settings, connection, operating system, and drivers. Verify the capability and configuration of your own source rather than assuming a specific camera or capture card is required.
3. Check whether OBS can render and encode the stream
Rendering scenes and encoding video use system resources. OBS identifies GPU overload or a GPU bottleneck as common causes of performance trouble; higher output resolution and frame rate add workload. Use a representative scene with the motion you expect to stream, then inspect OBS’s rendering and encoding performance indicators. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains common bottlenecks and recommends reducing resolution or frame rate when the system cannot keep up.

- Simplify a demanding scene if it overloads rendering.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the selected settings.
- Consider a hardware encoder only if encoding load is the problem and an appropriate encoder is supported by your hardware, operating system, and drivers. OBS documents platform and compatibility considerations in its hardware encoding guide.
If 60 fps is unstable, OBS advises trying 30 fps. A consistent 30-fps stream is preferable to a higher target that drops frames. This is a system-performance decision, not proof that YouTube limits your stream to 30 fps.

Test before an event and check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can enable manual stream-resolution selection. Review the detected input properties alongside OBS’s output settings. YouTube describes stream keys and live-stream controls in Manage live stream settings.

Interpret the incoming properties separately from viewer playback options. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates, so the playback rendition available to a viewer is not necessarily the frame rate OBS sent. 5. Check the encoder settings YouTube expects
YouTube supports incoming live frame rates up to 60 fps, but that ceiling does not guarantee that every source, computer, connection, resolution, codec, or account setup can deliver 60 fps reliably. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder settings specify these compatibility points:

- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Recommended advanced settings: progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- SDR color settings: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
For H.264, YouTube’s current live-ingestion guidance lists these recommended bitrates. They are recommendations for the specified input format, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds; choose the row that matches your resolution and frame rate.

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. YouTube lists separate recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1, so do not apply H.264 figures to a different codec. Bitrate affects the stream’s data rate and quality; changing it does not switch OBS’s output frame rate.

7. Check stream content and platform rules
Technical settings cannot resolve rights or policy problems. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-stream settings and notices in Live Control Room. This is especially important when using recorded or reused material: technical permission to send a stream is not the same as permission to use its content.
