YouTube describes fan funding as a way to earn extra income while connecting with viewers and building a community. Its core formats are channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. YouTube Shopping is a separate monetization path, not a fan-funding feature.

Choose Super Chat or Stickers for live interaction
These purchases are tied to live chat on streams and Premieres. Super Chat emphasizes a viewer’s message; a Super Sticker is an animated image. Viewers’ purchase, channel name, profile picture, and purchase amount are publicly visible.

Choose Super Thanks for eligible existing videos
Super Thanks is a one-time purchase attached to an eligible video or Short. It is not available while a stream or Premiere is live, but may be available on the archived long-form video afterward.
Eligibility: YPP is the first gate, not a guarantee
YouTube’s Commerce Products policies set baseline requirements for fan funding: the channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), the creator must be at least 18, and the creator must live in a location where the individual feature is available. The creator must also accept and comply with the applicable Commerce Product Module or, for some creators who signed the earlier agreement, its Commerce Product Addendum. Each feature has additional eligibility rules and must be enabled individually in YouTube Studio or the Studio mobile app.

These thresholds are YouTube’s listed requirements, not a promise that every feature will be available to every channel that meets them. Feature-specific rules, location, and channel status still matter. YouTube also says paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward YPP thresholds, apart from qualifying follow-on views as described on its monetization page. Check the current Earn tab in Studio and the applicable help page before planning around access; YouTube can change thresholds, availability, and rules.

Content and feature restrictions
Super Chat and Super Stickers
YouTube lists these as unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, Made for Kids, or YouTube Giving fundraiser videos. They also require live chat or comments to be enabled. The creator must be in an eligible location and comply with YouTube’s terms and policies.
Super Thanks
The channel cannot be set as Made for Kids and must not have a significant number of ineligible or Made for Kids videos. YouTube also notes that some music channels under SRAV contracts are currently ineligible. An individual video or Short cannot use Super Thanks if it is age-restricted, unlisted, private, made for kids, copyright-claimed, associated with a YouTube Giving fundraiser, or has comments turned off.

Memberships
Memberships have their own current terms, location coverage, and channel eligibility rules. Confirm them in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the baseline YPP requirements alone are enough.

Fan funding is not donations
YouTube explicitly says Supers and Super Thanks are not crowdfunding or donation tools. They are paid platform features with their own eligibility, purchase, and policy rules. Fundraising through YouTube Giving is separate and can be incompatible with these features: for example, Super Chat and Stickers are unavailable on streams using Live Chat Donations, while Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with Donations. Creators are responsible for understanding applicable laws and whether they may offer or receive these payments in their jurisdiction.

What creators and viewers should know about the money
Super Thanks revenue share
YouTube says creators receive 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted. YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This stated share applies specifically to Super Thanks; the cited YouTube information does not establish the revenue share for memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers.
Viewer purchase limits and refunds
YouTube’s viewer help states combined daily and weekly spending limits across Super Chats, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Gifts of up to $500 USD per day or $2,000 USD per week, or the equivalent in local currency; limits vary by country or region. These are viewer-side purchase limits, not a creator earnings cap. Super Thanks purchases are non-refundable. Some YouTube Android app purchases may be billed through Google Play; YouTube says that changes the billing source, not the price or cost.
Other ways to earn on YouTube
YouTube Shopping is adjacent to fan funding but distinct from it. YouTube says eligible creators may promote products from other brands and earn through Shopping; availability and eligibility are separate and can change. Check YouTube’s current Shopping requirements before relying on it.
Keep a YouTube channel live while you build community
A 24/7 prerecorded-video stream can be one way to keep a channel active, but it is separate from fan funding and does not guarantee memberships or Supers. For a do-it-yourself setup, a computer running streaming software such as OBS must remain on and connected, and the stream must be configured with YouTube’s current encoder settings and a valid stream key. Make sure every video and audio element is cleared for use; copyright claims or other policy issues can limit monetization or availability of features. YouTube fan funding eligibility still applies independently.
