If your OBS stream went offline after a DNS change, first compare OBS’s complete server URL with the current Stream URL in YouTube Live Control Room, then look up the URL’s hostname from the computer running OBS. A failed lookup shows that the name is not resolving through that computer’s current DNS resolver; a successful lookup does not prove the connection to YouTube is healthy. Check the protocol, RTMPS support, stream key, and network before concluding DNS caused the outage.
1. Copy YouTube’s current Stream URL
- Open the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room and open its stream settings.
- Copy the current Stream URL. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to put this URL in the encoder’s server field and the stream key in its key field. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Check which protocol the URL uses. If you intend to use RTMPS, reveal or select YouTube’s RTMPS URL in the Stream URL control; the displayed URL may default to ordinary RTMP.
Do not substitute a remembered hostname or one found in an old post. YouTube’s current URL for the active stream is the reference to compare against.

2. Compare the OBS server setting
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and compare the configured server with YouTube’s current Stream URL. Check the hostname and the full URL for a stale destination, typo, missing scheme, or RTMP/RTMPS mismatch. If OBS offers separate service, server, and stream-key fields, compare the server field with YouTube’s URL and use the key YouTube provides for that stream.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
3. Test the hostname from the OBS computer
Extract only the hostname from the server URL—omit the scheme (such as rtmps://) and any path—and run a DNS lookup on the same computer and network used by OBS. Use the lookup utility appropriate to that operating system and DNS setup. For example, nslookup hostname is available on many Windows systems and dig hostname on many macOS and Linux systems; replace hostname with the actual hostname, not the entire URL.
These commands are general diagnostic examples, not YouTube-prescribed commands. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a canonical IP address, DNS resolver, or expected lookup result for this situation. Record whether the lookup succeeds and which resolver answered. Addresses can vary by resolver and time, so a different address from a stale cache or third-party post does not by itself indicate a fault.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
If the lookup fails
The hostname did not resolve through that machine’s current resolver at the time of the test. Recheck that you copied the hostname correctly from YouTube, then investigate the DNS record or resolver change and the computer’s DNS configuration or cache using the operating system and DNS provider’s instructions. A failed lookup alone does not identify which setting or provider caused it.
If the lookup succeeds
DNS resolution worked for that test, but it does not establish that OBS can reach YouTube’s ingest server or complete the streaming connection. Continue with the transport, credentials, and network checks below.

4. Check RTMP, RTMPS, and connection errors
YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. For a connection timeout, verify the server URL and protocol; YouTube’s instruction is: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
If OBS reports an SSL error while using RTMPS, first verify the exact URL and protocol from Live Control Room. YouTube also suggests trying port 443 for this error. Treat that as a targeted troubleshooting option for an SSL error, not a universal port change for every offline stream.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Do not switch to HLS as a generic DNS repair. YouTube documents HLS for use cases such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support; it is not a hostname-fix method. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

5. Verify the key, preview, and stream health
- In OBS, confirm that the stream key corresponds to the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room. If uncertain, copy the current key from YouTube and enter it privately in OBS.
- Start a test stream and check whether the expected preview appears in Live Control Room. YouTube advises copying the URL and key into the encoder and verifying the preview before going live.
- Monitor stream health and check available upload bandwidth and connection stability. YouTube recommends testing before the event and leaving upload headroom; its guidance warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What each result tells you
| Observation | What it establishes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Configured hostname fails DNS lookup | The name did not resolve through that machine’s current resolver at test time. It does not identify which DNS change or provider setting is responsible. | Compare the hostname with YouTube’s current Stream URL, then inspect the changed DNS record and the machine’s resolver configuration. |
| Hostname resolves, but OBS times out | DNS resolution alone did not restore the connection. | Recheck the full URL and protocol, encoder RTMPS support, and network reachability. |
| OBS reports an SSL or certificate error | TLS/SSL validation is relevant to the failed connection. | Verify the exact RTMPS URL; YouTube’s troubleshooting also suggests port 443 for this error. |
| OBS sends, but YouTube has no expected preview | Resolving the hostname has not confirmed that the URL, key, or ingest configuration is correct. | Recopy the URL and key from Live Control Room and check the preview. |
| Preview appears, but viewers experience instability | The hostname is not the only possible factor. | Monitor stream health and investigate upload capacity and connection stability. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a DNS lookup reveal the correct YouTube server IP?
No. YouTube’s guidance does not publish a canonical IP for this scenario. Compare the hostname with the current Stream URL and treat lookup output as a time- and resolver-specific diagnostic.
Should I change to port 443 whenever OBS goes offline?
No. YouTube suggests port 443 as an option when troubleshooting an RTMPS SSL error after verifying the URL; it is not a general fix for every offline stream.
