You can run a 24/7 YouTube Live stream of nature footage at 4K and 60 frames per second by looping the video through an encoder, configuring YouTube’s recommended live settings, and maintaining enough stable upload bandwidth. For a local setup, the source, encoder, computer, power and internet connection all need to keep working; a cloud service can handle the continuous playback instead. Neither approach guarantees an uninterrupted stream, so test it and plan for recovery.
What you need for a continuous 4K60 stream
A 4K60 broadcast depends on more than the resolution of the original nature footage. The source must be 3840 × 2160 progressive video at 60 fps; the encoder must be able to process and send it; the connection must sustain the outgoing bitrate; and YouTube must receive a healthy feed. For unattended playback, the video must also loop or otherwise continue supplying footage.

- Suitable footage: 4K at 60 fps if you want the broadcast to retain that resolution and frame rate. Encoding cannot create real detail or motion absent from the source.
- An encoder workflow: YouTube supports software encoders on computers and standalone hardware encoders. For prerecorded footage, choose an encoder or service that can keep supplying the video continuously.
- Reliable upstream capacity: Measure upload speed, not just the download speed advertised by your internet plan. Leave the headroom described below.
- A recovery plan: Monitor stream health and decide how you will restart or restore the feed if the encoder, connection or YouTube session stops.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide includes a cloud service as an example for continuous prerecorded-video streams. That reference is an example in YouTube Help, not an endorsement or a guarantee about that service’s current availability or limits. YouTube’s encoder setup guide also explains the initial activation requirement: enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.

- Enable live streaming and allow activation time. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for your channel. If this is the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Once enabled, create a scheduled stream or open Live Control Room to start one.
- Choose a continuous playback method. On a local computer, configure your encoder to play and loop the prerecorded nature video. A hardware encoder or cloud broadcast service can be another route. Confirm that the specific encoder or service supports your intended resolution, frame rate, continuous playback and recovery needs.
- Set the video format. Choose 3840 × 2160 progressive (2160p) at 60 fps. This setting describes the outgoing stream; it does not upgrade lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source footage.
- Set bitrate and rate control. YouTube’s returned English encoder-settings page lists 35 Mbps as its H.264 recommendation for 2160p60. It lists a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1/H.265. The retrieved English and localized results differed on the H.264 recommendation, and the page did not state a publication date. Check the active YouTube Help or Studio guidance for your locale, codec and current setup before choosing a value; do not substitute the higher bitrate guidance for uploaded video. Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a supported video codec. YouTube’s returned live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. Which one is practical depends on your encoder and its current ingest support. If compatibility is uncertain, verify the encoder and YouTube’s current guidance before scheduling a long stream.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over TLS/SSL to encrypt the connection to its servers. YouTube explains encrypted RTMPS ingest here.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s live settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: it allows an encoder to send video to your stream, so do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast. YouTube supports scheduled streams and reusable settings; auto-start and auto-stop can let the encoder control starting and stopping when those options are enabled. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.
- Test before going unattended. Run a test that resembles the planned stream and watch stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Check the image, frame rate, audio, bitrate and connection stability before relying on the setup for a long session.
How much upload speed does 4K60 need?
For H.264 at the 35 Mbps 2160p60 recommendation shown on YouTube’s returned English Help page, 20% headroom puts the video-bitrate target above 42 Mbps before accounting for audio and network overhead. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s bitrate and headroom guidance—not a YouTube-published minimum internet plan or a guarantee of stability. The AV1/H.265 recommendation is a range, so the required upstream capacity depends on the bitrate you actually select.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, including a backup bitrate where relevant. Test the actual upstream connection under the conditions you expect during the broadcast. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce available capacity, and a speed test at a quiet time does not prove that the connection will remain stable when shared. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and connection reliability.
If your upload is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen target with headroom, do not assume the 4K60 stream will hold. Improve the connection or hosting workflow, or lower the stream target and test again. The internet plan’s advertised download rate alone is not a useful basis for this decision.

Keep the broadcast running—and know its limits
“24/7” is an operating goal, not a promise that a stream will never stop. In a local setup, the footage loop, encoder, computer, network, power and YouTube session all have to keep operating. A cloud workflow moves continuous playback and encoding away from your home computer, but you should still understand the service’s current bitrate, runtime, recovery and storage limits and monitor the resulting YouTube stream.
The cited YouTube guidance describes encoder types and stream controls, but it does not establish a guarantee of indefinite uninterrupted runtime, a maximum duration policy for this workflow, or service uptime limits for any particular provider. Assess a setup by asking whether it can handle 4K60, how it loops prerecorded video, how you will notice a dropped feed, what recovery it provides, and what it costs to operate.

Local encoder or cloud playback?
| Consideration | Local encoder | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| What must remain available | The capable computer or hardware encoder, source playback, power and internet connection must remain operating. | Continuous processing is handled by the service; you still need to verify its terms and monitor the YouTube feed. |
| What to verify | That the encoder can produce your chosen 4K60 settings and loop footage, and that your upstream connection remains stable. | Current resolution and bitrate limits, continuous-playback behavior, storage, runtime terms, recovery behavior and cost. |
| Control and monitoring | You can manage the encoder directly, but you are responsible for the computer and connection. | Controls and monitoring depend on the provider; confirm what it offers before relying on it. |
| Operating cost | Depends on equipment, power and internet you already have or need; no universal total is established. | Depends on the provider’s current plan and limits; compare the relevant terms rather than assuming cloud is cheaper. |

- YouTube does not let you go live: If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. Wait for activation, then return to Live Control Room.
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream URL and key match the intended YouTube stream, the key has not been replaced, and the encoder uses a protocol YouTube accepts. Use RTMPS when available.
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Test upstream capacity while the network is under realistic load. Leave the recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate and account for other users sharing the connection. If it still cannot hold, reduce the target bitrate or change the connection or hosting workflow.
- The stream is not actually 4K60: Check the encoder output setting and the source file’s resolution and frame rate. Confirm the selected codec and bitrate against current YouTube guidance; a 4K60 setting cannot restore detail or frames missing from the source.
- The feed stops during a long session: Check whether the playback loop ended, the encoder or computer lost power, the network failed, or the YouTube session stopped. Use Live Control Room’s health messages to help identify the interruption, then restore the encoder or playback and verify that the stream is healthy again. Do not treat a 24/7 configuration as a substitute for monitoring and recovery planning.
Check copyright and monetization suitability
Use footage and audio you own or are authorized to stream. A nature video may still contain copyrighted music, ambient recordings or third-party footage, so check every part of the program rather than assuming that nature content is automatically safe. YouTube’s encoder and stream-settings guidance explains technical setup, not whether particular footage qualifies for monetization or complies with every channel policy. Review the applicable YouTube rules for your channel and content before leaving a stream running.
