If OBS says it is encoding but your YouTube live stream has stopped updating, that indicator alone does not show whether fresh video is reaching YouTube. First compare the OBS preview and a local recording with OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A freeze in local output points toward the source, rendering, or encoding path; healthy local output with remote problems points toward delivery or ingest. That split is a diagnostic guide, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Find out where the freeze starts
Check the same moment in three places: OBS, a local recording if available, and YouTube playback. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and looking for problems in the local archive. If only remote viewers report a freeze, find out whether they are on one device, one shared network, or separate connections.

| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview or local recording is frozen or choppy | Source, scene rendering, or encoding performance | Check encoder errors and CPU/GPU load; simplify the scene or reduce output demands if needed. |
| Local output is healthy, but YouTube playback is not | Outbound connection, ingest, or platform stream health | Check OBS dropped frames and connection status, then read YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. |
| One viewer reports a freeze | That viewer’s device or connection may be involved | Ask another viewer to check from a different connection. |
| Several viewers on the same network report it | The shared viewer network may be involved | Compare with viewers on separate networks before changing encoder settings. |
| Viewers on separate networks report the same issue | An encoder-side or stream-wide problem becomes more plausible | Compare local output, OBS statistics, and YouTube stream health. |
This branch-based approach follows OBS and YouTube troubleshooting guidance; the symptom alone does not identify one universal cause.
Check OBS and YouTube delivery signals
Read OBS statistics
Look at OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status while the problem is happening. OBS defines dropped frames in this context as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Not every visual freeze produces dropped frames, so a clean counter does not by itself prove that the entire path is healthy.

Read YouTube stream health
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and any reported errors. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance advises creators to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during the event. Treat those messages alongside the local recording and OBS statistics, rather than relying on the encoder-active indicator alone.
If OBS preview or local recording is affected
When the freeze is visible before the stream leaves the computer, focus first on production performance. Make one change at a time and watch whether the preview, recording, and encoder errors improve.

- Update OBS. Check whether you are running a current version before diagnosing an old build’s behavior.
- Check encoder errors and system load. Watch CPU load and, where relevant, GPU load while reproducing the scene. Close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- Reduce rendering demand. Simplify scenes and filters. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or lower graphics settings to leave resources for OBS.
- Lower output demands if needed. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test whether local output stays smooth.
- On Windows, consider Run as administrator for GPU overload. OBS lists this as a quick fix to try for GPU overload on Windows; it is not a general network fix and does not apply to every system.
Change only the setting that matches the evidence. A local rendering problem is not fixed by switching YouTube ingest servers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf local output is healthy but YouTube is not updating
Focus on the outbound path between OBS and YouTube. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That describes the dropped-frame symptom in OBS’s troubleshooting context; it does not mean every freeze has that cause.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
- Check connection stability. If you can, try a different ingest server where the streaming service exposes that setting.
- Match bitrate to reliable upload capacity. Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and stay within YouTube’s recommendation for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Check network software and drivers. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall or antivirus rules, bundled network software, and network drivers that could interfere with the connection. Avoid disabling protections without understanding the risk.
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi for a diagnostic test. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. A cable is useful only if your setup permits a direct wired connection, and it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Restart the modem or router for general connectivity trouble. If problems persist, OBS suggests considering faults in the modem/router, network cable, network card, switch, or extender. Contact your ISP if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue or you are unsure whether hardware needs replacement.
OBS documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing controls. These are version- and platform-specific options, not universal fixes; OBS advises leaving “Bind to IP” at “Default.”

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube lists different values for AV1/H.265: 1080p60 at 12 Mbps, 1080p30 at 10 Mbps, 720p60 at 6 Mbps, and 720p30 at 6 Mbps. Recommendations can change, so check the live settings table rather than treating these figures as permanent. OBS’s 2024 connection guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a diagnostic starting point for video bitrate; treat it as a starting suggestion, not an engineering guarantee. Stable upload capacity and YouTube’s applicable limits still matter.

Recheck the stream after each change
- Make one targeted change based on whether the fault is local production or delivery.
- Run a test stream before an important live event, and verify that the OBS preview, local recording, and YouTube playback remain current.
- During the event, keep OBS connection and dropped-frame indicators visible and review YouTube Live Control Room messages.
- If the issue persists, note when it began, whether local output was affected, what OBS reported, and what YouTube stream health showed. Those observations are more useful for OBS, YouTube, or ISP support than the encoder-active status alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than troubleshoot a live OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
