OBS portable mode can keep a Windows YouTube stream’s profiles and scene collections separate from your everyday OBS setup. It does not make OBS a 24/7 reliability system: your computer and connection still need to stay available, and portable mode does not bundle the media files used by your scenes. For a distinct setup, use a separate portable OBS folder, a dedicated profile for output settings, and a dedicated scene collection for scenes and sources.
What OBS portable mode separates—and what it does not
Portable mode stores OBS configuration with the application folder, so a separate extracted copy can use its own profiles and scene collections without mixing them with another OBS installation. The OBS Project documents portable mode for Windows and says it is unsupported on macOS and Linux. OBS portable-mode guide (2024-07-23).

It does not turn a normal computer-based OBS stream into a hosted or unattended service. OBS must still be running on the computer, and the machine and internet connection must remain available for streaming. The official guide also cautions: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” Keep referenced files accessible, or update their paths when relocating the folder.

Set up a separate portable OBS folder on Windows
- Download the Windows ZIP package from the OBS Project and extract it to a user folder. The portable-mode guide advises against extracting it to
Program Files. - Enable portable mode. In the extracted application root, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableargument. - Start that copy of OBS. Its configuration is stored with the application, separate from the configuration used by your other OBS installation.
- Check the scene media paths. If you move the portable folder to another location or machine, image and media sources may no longer resolve. Update the paths in the scene collection JSON or use a common path available from each location.
Portable mode is about configuration location, not removable storage: the OBS guide does not require a USB drive.

Use a profile and a scene collection together
A separate stream setup needs both saved settings and saved scenes. They hold different things, so changing one does not switch the other.

Give the profile and collection clear names, then confirm both are selected before streaming. If you change output settings, check the active profile; if you change the stream layout or sources, check the active scene collection.

Launch OBS with a chosen profile and collection
OBS documents launch parameters for portable mode, selecting a profile and scene collection, and starting a stream. For example, from a Windows command prompt, adapt this command to the actual OBS executable path and the exact names of your saved profile and collection:
"C:PathToOBSbin64bitobs64.exe" --portable --profile "YouTube 24-7" --collection "YouTube 24-7" --startstreaming

--portable (also -p) requests portable mode; --profile "name" and --collection "name" select saved configurations; --startstreaming requests stream startup. See the OBS Launch Parameters page (2021-05-30). The documented switches do not provide a watchdog, automatic recovery, or a YouTube-specific uptime procedure.
Test the exact command before relying on it unattended. A Windows user report opened 2026-09-23 describes OBS 32.2.2 portable mode retaining the previously active profile and collection despite those switches. That is a version-specific report, not confirmation of a general OBS defect. After launching, visibly verify the selected profile and collection before allowing the stream to start.

What this means for a 24/7 YouTube stream
A portable folder makes it easier to keep a stream configuration isolated; it does not establish continuous uptime. With a local OBS setup, the computer must stay on and OBS must remain running. The cited OBS documentation explains configuration and launch options, but does not promise uninterrupted streaming or automatic recovery after a dropped YouTube connection.
- Keep the portable folder and its referenced scene media accessible.
- Verify the active profile and scene collection before starting the stream, especially when using launch parameters.
- Do not treat a successful launch command as evidence that OBS will restart itself or recover a dropped stream; those behaviors are not established by the documented switches.
