First identify which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection; Encoding Lag points to work the encoder cannot finish on time; and Rendering Lag points to GPU or scene-compositing load. They are different problems, so changing an x264 preset will not fix every kind of stutter.
For an older Intel PC with encoding lag, test a lower output resolution, then 30 fps if you are currently streaming at 60 fps, then a faster x264 preset. Check whether OBS offers Intel Quick Sync (QSV) before trying it. No combination is guaranteed for an unspecified CPU, graphics setup, driver, and stream workload.

Diagnose the OBS counter before changing settings
Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming a representative scene and note which counter increases. You can also review the OBS log after a test. A stream may show more than one symptom, so address each counter separately rather than treating all dropped or skipped-looking video as a CPU problem.
Dropped Frames (Network)
OBS uses dropped frames for frames discarded because the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A faster encoder preset does not resolve that diagnosis. Check upload stability, the selected ingest server, VPN or network-prioritization software, and whether a wired connection is practical. OBS recommends testing another server and lowering the bitrate to a level your stable upload can sustain; its suggested 75% of total upload speed is a starting point, not a guarantee. OBS’s Dynamic Bitrate option can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and the resulting video quality can be lower. Treat it as a way to keep a stream going through some congestion, not as a substitute for a stable upload.
Encoding Lag or “Encoding Overloaded”
This points to OBS’s encoder failing to process the selected workload in real time. With x264, resolution, frame rate, and CPU preset all affect the work required. Reduce that workload using the sequence below. OBS’s x264 guide explains the preset trade-off.

Rendering Lag
Rendering lag indicates that OBS is struggling to render or composite the scene, often because the GPU is busy. An uncapped game can consume GPU time OBS needs even when the CPU encoder is not the main problem. Cap the game frame rate or enable V-Sync, reduce game graphics settings, and simplify scenes or sources. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can also reduce rendering work. Try x264 settings in a controlled order
Change one setting at a time, then run a test with motion and scene complexity similar to your actual stream. Keep a note of the Stats counters and judge picture quality at the bitrate you intend to use. An older Intel label alone is not enough to predict which settings will work.

- Lower the output resolution. In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution. Test the stream before making another change. Lower output resolution reduces encoder load; it also reduces streamed detail.
- Lower the frame rate. In Settings → Video, reduce the common FPS value. If 60 fps is failing, OBS specifically suggests testing 30 fps. Fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work, though motion will look less smooth. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance.
- Choose a faster x264 CPU preset if encoding lag remains. In Settings → Output, use Advanced output mode if needed, then inspect the x264 CPU Usage Preset setting. Presets such as
ultrafast, superfast, andveryfastuse less CPU than slower presets. Faster encoding reduces CPU load but can reduce compression efficiency and image quality at the same bitrate. Compare results with the same resolution, frame rate, and bitrate rather than assuming a preset is universally best. - Retest the complete scene. Include the game or video, overlays, browser sources, and audio you normally use. A light test scene may succeed while the real scene still overloads the system.
Do not reduce the base canvas resolution as a universal first fix. OBS notes that changing it can complicate source layout and suggests it only when GPU resources are severely constrained.
Check whether Intel Quick Sync is available
Quick Sync Video (QSV) uses Intel graphics hardware to move some encoding work away from the CPU. OBS documents support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i CPU 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer, and recommends Core-i 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV generations had lower quality. Those generation notes do not guarantee that QSV will appear or work well on a particular PC: the integrated graphics, system configuration, operating system, and drivers matter. OBS also cautions that earlier hardware encoding can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. OBS hardware encoding guide.

- Open Settings → Output in OBS and inspect the available encoder choices.
- If an Intel Quick Sync option is available, select it for a test stream and monitor encoding and rendering lag.
- Compare it with a stable, lower-workload x264 setup at the same resolution, frame rate, and YouTube bitrate. Check both whether encoding lag disappears and whether picture quality is acceptable.
QSV is not automatically better: a separate GPU or scene-rendering bottleneck may remain, and image quality depends on the Intel generation and settings. Choose based on a representative test, not the processor brand alone.

Keep YouTube ingest settings compatible and sustainable
YouTube’s live encoder settings cover RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR bitrate control, a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current table for the codec you select instead of copying one bitrate across every stream.
Best Value
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | not stated for this combination in the cited YouTube figures | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 figures, not a promise that your connection or encoder can sustain them. A recommendation that exceeds stable upload capacity can cause network-dropped frames; a bitrate below a platform recommendation can reduce image quality. Set the bitrate in OBS to a level that is both compatible with YouTube’s current guidance and sustainable on your connection.
Run a short diagnostic test
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream and open OBS Stats. Record whether network-dropped frames, encoding lag, or rendering lag rises during representative content.
- If encoding lag rises, test lower output resolution first, then 30 fps if you were using 60 fps, then a faster x264 preset. If OBS offers QSV, test it as an alternative encoder.
- If rendering lag rises, cap the game frame rate or enable V-Sync, reduce graphics settings, and simplify resource-heavy scenes or sources.
- If network-dropped frames rise, try another ingest server, reduce bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, check VPN or network-prioritization software, and use wired networking where possible.
- Check YouTube stream health and keep the settings that remain stable with representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud
