OBS YouTube Stream Dropping Frames on an Indian VPS: How to Check RAM

OBS network dropped frames do not diagnose RAM exhaustion. Use OBS Stats, Linux memory and pressure data, swap activity, CPU evidence, and OOM logs from the same failure window to investigate.

Not necessarily. OBS’s network “Dropped Frames” counter points to a stream connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; it does not measure RAM. A memory-starved VPS can still cause trouble indirectly, but you need to compare OBS’s counters with memory, CPU, swap, and system-log evidence from the same period to identify the cause.

First identify which OBS counter is increasing

Open View > Docks > Stats in OBS and watch the counters while the problem occurs. Record which one rises and save an OBS log covering the failure window. OBS distinguishes three performance problems, and they point to different investigations:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is struggling to render the scene in time. Check CPU and graphics/render workload.
  • Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder cannot encode quickly enough. Check encoder and CPU capacity, then consider reducing the encoding workload.
  • Network dropped frames: OBS cannot deliver the stream reliably at the configured bitrate. Investigate the VPS’s network route and egress, bitrate, and connection to YouTube.

These counters are not interchangeable. OBS explains that when the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate, it may drop video frames to compensate. That describes a delivery problem, not proof of exhausted RAM. See the OBS Help and OBS encoding performance guide.

Check whether the VPS is actually under memory pressure

Take measurements during the same interval that OBS reports trouble. A host can have memory in use without being out of usable memory, and a container or service can have a lower limit than the host’s total RAM suggests. Check the memory limit that applies to the OBS process, not just the VPS plan’s advertised capacity.

  1. Check Linux’s available-memory estimate: inspect /proc/meminfo, especially MemAvailable. This is more useful for judging memory available to applications than treating low free memory alone as proof of exhaustion.
  2. Check swap: inspect whether swap is being used and whether activity increases during the failure. Heavy swapping can slow a process even if it has not been killed.
  3. Check pressure indicators if enabled: read /proc/pressure/memory for memory pressure; also inspect /proc/pressure/cpu and /proc/pressure/io for CPU or I/O contention. PSI availability depends on the system configuration.
  4. Check the actual service or container limit: compare its configured memory ceiling with usage during the event. Host-level memory figures can conceal a tighter cgroup or provider limit.
  5. Check kernel logs: look for out-of-memory (OOM) killer messages around the time OBS stalled, exited, or lost its stream.
  6. Record CPU and workload: note CPU utilization or load and any other processes running alongside OBS. A busy encoder or competing workload can be the issue even when memory is adequate.

Linux documents MemAvailable and related /proc information in its /proc documentation. Memory pressure indicators are described in the Linux PSI documentation; kernel OOM behavior is covered in the OOM documentation.

Match the evidence to the likely cause

Network dropped frames rise, but memory and processing look healthy

Focus on whether the VPS can sustain the configured upload bitrate and whether its route or egress to YouTube is stable. OBS connects to the destination streaming service; the OBS project does not relay the stream. Test at a bitrate the connection can sustain rather than assuming a memory upgrade will help. Follow the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.

Rendering or encoding lag rises

Reduce the workload and retest. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce rendering and encoding demands; check the encoder and available CPU capacity as well. OBS’s encoding performance guide covers these adjustments. A lower setting trades away output quality or smoothness, so change one setting at a time and compare results.

Memory pressure, heavy swapping, or an OOM event coincides with the failure

First confirm the effective memory limit and whether another process is competing for resources. Reduce unnecessary concurrent workload and retest. If the evidence still points to a resource ceiling, consider an instance with more effective memory after checking the provider’s actual allocation and limits. If the OBS counters show a network problem instead, a larger RAM allocation alone may not address it.

Retest without changing several things at once

  1. Use representative audio and video motion; a static scene may not reproduce the load or connection conditions of the real stream.
  2. Record the OBS Stats counters and system resource evidence over the same test period.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health while the test is running.
  4. Change one variable—such as bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or concurrent workload—then repeat the test. This makes it easier to tell what changed the result.

YouTube advises choosing settings that fit a reliable upload connection, testing with representative content, and monitoring stream health. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current configuration-specific table in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

Why there is no universal RAM number or guaranteed VPS fix

The necessary resources depend on details such as the VPS’s effective memory and CPU allocation, operating system, OBS version, encoder, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other running workloads. Without those details and logs from the failure, no specific minimum RAM or provider upgrade can be recommended. The relevant measure is what the OBS process can use under load—not a plan label or the host’s total memory in isolation.
