Change the computer’s sleep timeout—not just the setting that turns off the display. OBS cannot keep transmitting normally while the computer is asleep; this is an inference from how operating-system sleep works, not a test of a particular OBS and YouTube setup.
Change the sleep setting, not the screen timeout
Your display can turn off while the computer remains awake. That is different from the computer entering sleep, which interrupts the normal operation OBS needs to send a live stream. You can let the display turn off if you want, provided the computer itself stays awake.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Change the sleep timeout for the power condition you will use during the broadcast. For a long session, set a timeout that outlasts the stream or disable sleep for that condition if the option is available.
- Set the screen-off timeout separately if you want the display to turn off while OBS continues running.
- Plug in the computer for the stream, then test that it stays awake for the intended broadcast window.
The documented path is for Windows 11. Windows 10, managed computers, and manufacturer-customized devices may show different controls or policies.
Mac laptop
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off while the Mac is plugged in and needs to keep working with its display off.
- Test the stream with the Mac connected to power.
Apple notes that preventing sleep can increase power consumption. The setting applies to operation on the power adapter; do not assume it will keep the Mac awake on battery.

Confirm whether sleep is actually causing the drop
- Note the time the stream stops and check whether the computer entered sleep at that moment. If it did, adjust the relevant sleep timeout first.
- Run a test stream while the computer is plugged in and prevented from sleeping. The display may turn off independently.
- If the stream still drops while the computer remains awake, troubleshoot the network separately; changing sleep settings will not fix an unstable connection.
If OBS disconnects while the computer stays awake
OBS lists unstable Wi-Fi, network software, drivers, and hardware among possible causes of connection trouble. Its connection troubleshooting guidance is for dropped frames and intermittent connection problems generally, rather than specifically for a YouTube stream interrupted by sleep.
- Test Ethernet. If you are streaming over unstable Wi-Fi, try a wired connection. An Ethernet cable may help diagnose or address Wi-Fi instability, but it does not prevent the computer from sleeping.
- Check interfering software. VPNs, firewall or antivirus software, and network-prioritization utilities can interfere with a connection. Check whether the problem changes when you review these tools and their settings.
- Check drivers and hardware. Investigate network drivers and hardware before replacing equipment. If the problem persists after reasonable troubleshooting, contact your internet service provider.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS says dynamic bitrate can reduce quality and does not resolve the underlying connection cause. It is not a substitute for keeping the computer awake.
Use OBS automatic reconnect as a recovery aid
OBS documents automatic reconnect controls under Settings > Advanced. Configure reconnect if you want OBS to try to recover after a transient connection loss, then test what happens when your computer wakes. Reconnect is recovery behavior; it does not keep OBS transmitting while the computer sleeps.
