BackstopJS runs visual regression tests by capturing pages and comparing them with approved reference screenshots. Install it, initialize a project, define viewports and scenarios, run backstop test, inspect the report, and use backstop approve only when the differences are intended.
Install BackstopJS and initialize a project
BackstopJS is an open-source tool for automating visual regression checks of web applications. The project describes its purpose as “comparing screenshots over time.” See the BackstopJS project documentation for the README and installation details.
You can install BackstopJS globally or add it to a project. The documented global installation is:

backstop initBefore initializing in an established project, check the target directory: initialization can overwrite existing files. Teams that prefer project-local dependencies can follow the local installation and Node integration guidance in the project README.
Configure viewports and scenarios
By default, BackstopJS reads backstop.json from the project root. Use a JavaScript configuration file if comments are useful, or select another configuration file with --config=<path>.

At minimum, define an id, one or more viewports, and scenarios. Each scenario needs a label and a url; the URL can be absolute or local to the project. A compact example of the configuration shape is:

}Use real application URLs and choose viewport dimensions that cover the layouts your team needs to protect. Make scenarios represent repeatable, user-visible states—not just a large collection of URLs. For pages that require authentication or interaction, consult the scenario-property documentation before assuming a basic URL capture is sufficient. The project documentation lists cookies, selectors, and interactions among the supported setup concerns.

Run a comparison and review the report
- Run
backstop testfrom the project directory. BackstopJS captures test bitmaps and compares them with the current reference set. - Open the visual report and inspect the reference image, new test image, and diff for each flagged scenario. Determine whether the difference is a defect, an unstable page state, or an intentional design change.
- For a focused rerun, use
--filter=<scenarioLabelRegex>. For example,backstop test --filter="home-page"limits the run to matching scenario labels. - If the change is intended, run
backstop approve. The latest test captures then become the references for later runs. You can filter approval to promote selected image files; use the same--config=<path>value if the test used a non-default configuration.
Approval is a baseline change, not a way to make a failing test disappear. A useful team practice is to include changed reference images in the code review and explain why each visual change is expected. That makes future comparisons traceable.
Reduce rendering noise and tune resource use
Make captures more repeatable
Differences in browser environment, fonts, animations, and dynamic page content can create noise. BackstopJS documents an optional --docker rendering mode to reduce variation between environments. It can standardize the rendering environment, but it does not guarantee that every source of nondeterminism disappears.

Stabilize pages where possible before raising misMatchThreshold. This setting is a percentage tolerance for image difference before a screenshot is marked failed; there is no universally correct value. Choose it based on the rendering noise your application has and the differences your team is willing to review. Inspect representative diffs rather than using a higher threshold to silence unexplained failures.
Adjust concurrency when CI resources are tight
BackstopJS has separate concurrency settings for image capture and image comparison: asyncCaptureLimit and asyncCompareLimit. If a run exhausts the CI worker’s memory, reduce concurrency and rerun. If runtime matters and the worker has capacity, tune the limits while monitoring the worker. The npm documentation gives an approximate RAM rule of thumb, not a guaranteed memory benchmark; see the BackstopJS npm documentation for details.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Initialization replaces a file:
backstop initcan overwrite files in its target directory. Review existing files and run initialization in an appropriate project directory. - A scenario is missing or does not run: Check that it is included in
scenariosand has a unique, usefullabeland a reachableurl. If you are using--filter, confirm the regular expression matches the label. - A page differs on every run: Look for changing content, animation, font loading, or inconsistent rendering environments. Stabilize the page state and consider Docker rendering; do not immediately raise the mismatch tolerance.
- A test is being approved with the wrong configuration: Pass the same
--config=<path>used for the test when approving, especially when multiple configurations exist. - The runner runs out of memory: Reduce
asyncCaptureLimitorasyncCompareLimit, then monitor memory and runtime on the CI worker as you adjust them. - Authenticated or interactive pages are not captured in the intended state: Configure the scenario using the documented cookie, selector, and interaction properties rather than relying on a plain URL alone.
